if I encorporate a trend into my style, it will stay there forever. but I looove to hear and think about every single trend every season again, it's culture anthropology

There's practically no barrier to entry if you want to be a fashion Tiktoker in 2024. We're going to see a million pastel yellow blazers and rugby polos from Zara get thrown out by September because nobody wanted to get left out of the content and the conversation. When niche aesthetics started getting popular in 2020 people were more apt to pick one that represented them and lean into it which I thought was really cool. Now everyone has to get in on every single aesthetic and trend for the 6 weeks it lasts. Where is the sustainability in that? 😭 Fashion should be fun, experimental, etc. but not at such a cost to the environment. Love your channel and other creators like Laini who bring awareness to these things. Great video!! 🥰

I think the older you get this actually doesn't matter, I'm almost 40. I don't watch trend videos to follow the trends I follow to see if their are new ways to style clothing pieces I alreadly like. I'm more intrested in how things are put together that alreadly fit my style not adding pieces just to say that I have said piece. Putting outfits together for me is like art so im not looking for timeless things or things that are on the cutting edge, I'm looking for the beauty in things I alreadly value/appreciate.

I aspire to reach your level of articulation when it comes to talking fashion and media consumption. Sick vid! It’s cool to think that the reasons we’re so obsessed with trends/a trend is either driven by the desire to be first to it, or inversely, the desire to deviate from it. Guilty of being on both ends 😂

A lot of the times, I like to look at trend predictions becsuse it's interesting to see what clothes, aesthetics, and categories people online (and sometimes in person) will be engaging with. I typically do not like to buy new clothes just to follow a trend but I do like to take inspiration on how to view my closet in a different light. But anyways, great & interesting video!

Trends are capitalism's best tools for commerce, creating a new, short-lived, but intense demand for brands to then supply. It wouldn't shock me if brands with enough influence are behind most trend vernacular (eg 'gorpcore, mobwife'), creating them artificially and inseminating them throughout culture behind closed doors for them to sell product as the terms rise in popularity and obsession. Social media (TikTok more specifically) would allow this to succeed, given that advertisers can literally purchase 'trends' as media inventory for them to own. Consumers need to be aware of this so they can make purchasing choices based on what they actually like rather than what a brand tells them to like.

Honestly this video helped me somehow “heal” the part of me who wanted to be “trendy” and “cool”. Before getting into fashion I was always looking for the new trend and I HAD TO HAVE IT, but now I want to have my own sense of fashion and self. Sometimes for fashion, style, or “coolness” you don’t have to be unique, you have to be yourself. Before “quiet luxury” bs I was already reading “Who What Wear” a lot and I was inclined into the classic, modern, minimalist style that some of the editors had. And now I see that it has died because the trend is no longer running. But for me, that’s me you know. Classic, elevated basics, tailored pants, blazers, suits, etc. So I think that you explaining the fads vs the trends vs being unique, has helped me to realize that I just have to own my sense of style. Also I think, that we should encourage more people to be “anti-trend” because some people like what they’re wearing and seriously have no need to be in trend if you love the style you have.

For me, after nearly two decades of slim fit-everything and being a part of the baggy-everything of the 90s, the comeback of the oversized style has taught me the refinement of an oversized look combining aspects of tailored, slim fits into my aesthetic. As far as “skinny” coming back, I think ‘slightly’ oversized will be a staple has been a big thing for me. Not so oversized that it’s hiding my body’s shape. And I kinda dig the stacked jeans look, slim up top and super flared at the bottom. Just my lil take on my future fashion endeavors. I’ve been at this for awhile! lol

I think people are searching for trends because everyone is dressing to show individuality, but while doing that and dressing originally people also want to be a part of community and that’s why we are looking for new trends and add them to our outfits. That makes us original but also due to trends we don’t feel cut off from the world around us

I think it's really tempting to fall into one of the two main reasons you mentioned for following trends, because we all want status and to feed our egos with the sense of being early, being smart, being unique, being well informed, etc. But if we hang on to that, we'll feed the judgmental side of our brain which will put us (and others) down in case these standards fail. What I've been trying to do is to see dressing up and styling as a fun almost childlike play, and use the trends and endless TikTok videos as inspiration to have more ideas for it. I'm also trying to only buy second hand or styling what I already have, and so far this has been even better for the goal of creating and not just copying others.

I love that you mentioned how styles, trends and movements around fashion are more diverse in culturally diverse areas. Especially more urbanized areas. I live in Tennessee and it is less common to see people with different style. People often dress for utility or simply to fit in. Whereas when I visit more urban and culturally diverse areas I feel more free to express my personal style. there is this interesting dynamic of both feeling like I am standing out and fitting in at the same time.

economic aspect also is extremely important! during Covid people were locked in houses with unreasonabely big cash ( state support, salary for online work, lots of savings on travel etc). So, they purchased huge amounts of BS online. Now we are in deep recession, so, trends are adopting ( old money style, minimalism, eco awarness etc).

Thinking that following a trend is the road to being unique is amazing.

I left comment on Antwon's video but i think it's fits here well too: Not the most original pov, but to me its like they just keep repackaging the same things in slightly different cuts with marginally different stories to tell. It just reflects the trend of having to hypercategorize every single concept with a different enough label you can sell to consumers before it dies out in a couple weeks or months. What was normcore became bloke core, what was techware became greyman and what was gorpcore now became quiet outdoors. There's nothing wrong with following trends, but god damn is it getting old seeing fashion institutions struggle to find at least a single refreshing concept that's not just 'thing before with slightly different marketing'

I think that trends have helped me find something that may stick with me for a while. As a millennial, I started rockin skinny jeans in the jerkin era. I love the transition to baggy fit because they are more comfortable and fit my big thighs better. In addition, the whole men becoming comfortable with newer silhouettes has helped me find the crop look with tops which I love. Even if trends change, as you mentioned, my friends in IRL aren’t as concerned with online fashion meta.

Wow, you articulated a lot of things I've been thinking about lately - especially the difference between trends and fads, and the difference between a trend you see on the street or a trend that's strictly online. I've lived in NYC most of my life, and I'm old enough to remember before the internet when I understood trends only by what I was seeing on the street or the subway. Now I hear about trends through social media that I never see on the street (I have yet to see a bow in real life, for example), and by the same token I'm wondering what it meant that right after Christmas break all the kids in the two nearby high schools were wearing almost exclusively head to toe black, though I haven't heard anyone talking about that as a trend. Been following you for a little while, but this was the best video I've seen from you yet, a whole new level!

People might think or claim to want to be unique, but at the same time they're mostly too scared to actually be different and end up mimicking others. Also skinny jeans are definitely not coming back. The only people saying that still have too many of them burning a hole in their closets.

For me personally, the trends thing happen kind of naturally, most of the time. Usually I just see someone doing something new and cool, something unusual, which inspires me to try a similar thing, if I see it fitting into my style. And then, after a couple of months or so, it turns out this is a thing all of a sudden and I see more and more people incorporating this idea, which makes me realize this is a trend now. I don't really care about "trend predictions" for 2024, or any existing trend I'm not already in, for that matter, because it would make me feel "late to the party" as you said, if I were to follow them.

This was such a comprehensive take on encapsulating the notion of trends.

Fashion is wearable art which can be a blessing and a curse. Personal style is a lifelong journey. Some people just get it and are able to find what works for them very easily and others it’s trial and error, and a lot of it. That doesn’t mean the journey can’t be fun. The most enjoyable part of fashion is the creativity, the new way of wearing something that someone else created so I don’t have to. Fashion is that celebration of self-art and creativity. I watched a RU-vidr just before this video as she explained and searched out 2024 trends. She stumbled across a Western Gothic trend on Pinterest and was super excited, until she discovered it was about an interior decorating trend. She said, ‘I want that on my body’ but it was wall art…she continued to show us her own Pinterest board of this dark, old fashioned western wear board that she created from an obsession she has with western wear. I loved her point of view and had an idea in my head about western wear but couldn’t really articulate it until I saw her Pinterest board. This is art in its purest form we are all helping each other discover new things about ourselves and the material world around us. That is the beauty of being human. Thank you for such an in depth and critical look at our behavior. We need more critical thinkers. 😊❤😊❤🎉🎉🎉 I will say one thing about the book you presented, no I have not read it, nor is this a critique of the book itself I’m sure it’s a lovely book, but the first thing babies actually do when they come into this world is feel. Trends for me are possibility to complete my personal style, i wait for some trends for years, because when something is trendy, it appears everywhere in different forms, wich means: choice For example, mary janes make part of my personal style for years, however prior to 2022/3 it was almost impossible to find exact ones that i invision. Then they got trendy and im glad, meaning i can finally choose a good pair or two. Same with bows etc.... So i only hop on trends that make part of my overall aesthetic. My aesthetic meanwhile almost does not change, i mean of course it changes and gets influenced by trends here and there, but overall style... Not so much. Im always somwhere around preppy, academias etc. Interesting that my colour palette is very strict and same since high scool lol. However i adore watching people experimenting with fashion and i am very theoretically curious about every trend and aesthetic i come across 😊 Omg im so boring. #pvv

I'm seeing a growth in Black & White for colour trends here in South Africa and social media and I'm interested in understand what that means about us right now as a global society. These 2 colours balance each other out is a very striking but subtle way. Loving it. It's opened up an interest in healing through colour for me. While I agree with your points on why we’re so obsessed with trends, I think that there is another important point to bring up that might shine some light on why we’re so hooked on finding the next fashion trend - lack of community in real life. There has been so much discourse recently about lack of third places, ten year olds taking over Sephora, and everyone on their phones and not hanging out in real life. We’re desperate to be a part of a community, and the easiest way to do that is to dress like the community you want to be a part of. Real life is also tough right now - unemployment, cost of living, politics, war. People are feeling lost in every sense of the word, and I think it makes people feel better to think about something as “superficial” as trends or clothing because it makes us feel good (I know it does for me). For the #PVV question, I think the “indie sleaze” aesthetic is going to come back. We’ve had the “clean girl” aesthetic for a bit now, and to your points, I think going on the complete opposite side of the spectrum and adopting the idgaf vibe is going to be the unique thing to do to get ahead of the trends. I like thinking about how a lot of these trends can be sourced secondhand. New trends bring old pieces back into circulation. Some things that come to mind are oversized leather jackets, sweater vests, 80s, 90s and y2k fashion.

Great video, my style is these days is focused more on the classic timeless pieces rather than following trends but I do keep an eye on what the gist of the main trends are. The good thing is when you focus on classic timeless pieces such as a sports jacket or a nice pair of dark wash jeans that fit your body well you can spend extra money on something high quality that will last years because you don’t have to worry about it going out trend.

I remember when my second option was flipping through a fashion magazine. I miss the 90's 😂. I also don't think its that anyone is obsessed with trends, I think we are obsessed with social media and the fact that we are ALL able to talk about fashion so freely as opposed to before social media where you didnt have any other choice but to wait till you went outside or hooked up with your friends or looked at a fashion magazine. I mean honestly nothing new under the sun. What people say are trends today have always existed and frankly worn the same way.

People in our biology feel inclined to despite being (individual and self expression) like to fit in and go with what they are marketed too as new and fresh and as you mentioned ahead of the curve. However, because evryone joins it no longer becomes ahead of the curve, it's just marketed that way. So by joining trends it allows that instinct in us to be accepted by others, fitting in and looking cool. It's a never ending cycle that companies use our psychology against us to participate in. That's why we love trends at our core basics. The same reason we are addicted to our phones, cigarettes etc. It's companies using our psychology against us. They in sme fashion places literally have trend forecasters who decide these decisions for us.

this whole idea of this videos and whatever was said during the course has been playing in my mind on a roll for the past few days , when u saw the title of the video i was happy someone else had the same ideologies because i’ve been seeing so many new trend names going around on ig or tiktok mainly and as u said that we want see what people we like or don’t like around us are wearing is so true, someone like me who goes to fashion school in milan the conversation of being unique or early adopter is always what u hear from everyone , its like a competition of being different and i get it this is competitive space, but also when i go to my cafeteria and i see everyone wearing each trend like mostly i see leopard/ cheetah print that’s very popular right now, i saw a girl wearing the cheetah sambas with a cherry coat and cheetah phone case and cheetah pants, its really overboard and adopted in full form , but my honest opinion is im not sick of seeing it at least for now but im sick of everyones opinion on social media about “2024 trend” and then gorpcore opium mob wife ralph lauren girls. as someone who’s followed and been obsessed with trends when i was younger i came to realisation recently that trends eventually die before they come back and it’s better to have timeless class pieces , like a leather jacket or black (i love black) or a trench or a mini skirt, trend always tend to get cringe and then u get looked at in a different way when you’re wearing it 6 months after its over . that was my opinion, im always watching everytime u drop a video i like your opinions and i think nyc is great i just went there this december 💃🏻

However, I think people are obsessed because for the people who were not the first to discover it, it gives other people an easy route to look "cool," like all you have to do is copy what everyone is wearing and boom you're "cool." i've seen a lot of people say that animal print is going to be a big trend this year especially leopard print but in my opinion animal print was always in and not really a trend just a statement piece just not as eye catching last year since we were busy focusing on bigger trends like bows which i think people have really "over used" on social media to get more views

When it comes to trends, I feel like it's something that I'd like to try out and add to my arsenal of fashion knowledge. I perceive my fashion as a way of painting a world that I can create as a narrative of a person I aspire to be. Most of my narratives are stuck in the past, to alway induce that feeling of nostalgia, with slight nods to older faddy trends to not come across as portentous. SO I would fall in the category as a late adapter because its finally my turn to make something largely talked about my own. I may be showing up to the party late, but at least it'll be my version of fashionably late.

This was a great watch. I think we as young people who are chronically and constantly spending a lot of time on our phones are heavily influenced by our friends and people we follow, especially within social media. If we see them like some brand or have an interest toward something, than innately at times we go ‘Oh, you think this is cooI? l think they’re cool too.’ or ‘They wear this? I should start wearing them also.’ And the reverse can be said also. I think it has to do without a doubt all of us wanting to be unique, BUT also at the same time have a sense of belonging. We all want to be like the people we idolize/admire. So you do what they do, but how can you be a little different at the same time? The influence of others can affect us very drastically. That’s why to me people who truly don’t care about others and what they wear, what they like, and what they say are ‘freer’ in a sense because they don’t stress about things like this. If we put less thought into social media and what others thought, and focused on ‘Does wearing this make me happy for myself alone at the end of the day?’, I feel like it would bring us much more happiness. I know that’s something I strive for. It takes a lot of mindfulness and discipline.

Dude it’s just crazy to see how an algorithm is basically choosing for us what to “wear” or buy. It is just too instant, but there is always a sense of gratification when you find what you personally like to wear on your own time.

Thanks for the video! It really got me thinking. And my intuition is this: trends are physical manifestation of the zeitgeist. Navigating trends and staying on top of them is to be fluent in reading the atmosphere in the room, and the room is the world. Fads to me are singular items: sambas, Birkenstocks, whatever birkins or house of Sonny dresses. Now what I think is confusing is that we don't really have one room to read. Theoretically YT is a big platform where I can find anything and everything. But the algorithm is keeping me isolated in my bubble, and each bubble has its own atmosphere and temperature. We could now try to slice it in many ways, and create arbitrary definitions "trend is only a trend if multiple bubbles agree on it". But how many? I don't know. The online fashion bubble is pedaling so fast that at times I think it reads its own temperature and nothing else. And this reading is not useless, but it's also not very useful. The greatest fashion captures zeitgeist, a moment in time connected to a shared experience and a commonly understood idea, across a big portion of society. But in order to do that, we need to broaden our experience. Become fashion people and also gamers, painters, dog owners, friends with truck drivers, art teachers, fishermen and chefs. And I have no idea how to achieve that when the social media platforms keep us separated, but I think people who are best at observing trends in society have a varied and broad net of friends.

I’ve participated in trends my whole life, but stuck to underlying themes that are a part of my identity (punk, alt, androgynous). Imo yes trends are temporary but with fashion often recycling trends with each decade, I’ve accumulated enough clothes to pull out when I do want to follow a new trend. Trends aren’t timeless but they also kind of are once you’ve collected more clothes. This prob doesn’t make the most sense but that’s sort of how I feel. I think it’s important to have a solid identity when you’re looking to participate in a new trend

Something im anticipating is techwear/ bladerunner fits becoming more common. I think 2024 seems like a good year for futuristic styles to begin.

Seeing new aesthetics coming outw makes me happy that people are experimenting with it. It may be not my style but i just like how it fits on other people and see the joy of wearing them. What i kinda hate about trends is that repetitive aspect. For exemple at my school i only see the top 2 elements: sambas and baggy jeans, and i wish ppl get out of it and wear something creative and i also don't want to end up being in that repetitive cycle. Also when i like something (before it is trendy) and it becomes trendy i tend to dislike the item a little because i want to be different and not look like i follow the crowd.😭 But now thinking of it, I shouldn't stop myself of wearing something what others also like. If the item goes w mostly everything of my wardrobe, why shouldn't i purchase it? What an interesting video ! Living in europe in the countryside, trends and fabs are such a thing I was mostly seeing online. It didn't seem important at all or even a part of someone's life. It's even kind of completely ridicule to throw yourself into everything, who really does that ? And teenagers on tiktok who could be influenced by them are economically not able to follow those. THEN you spoke about being late at the party, not wanting to be left behind in a more general and cultural way. And I remember this friend who just cannot be honest about not knowing some film or music band. He will just lie about everything, feeling desperate and pretend to know from ages even if he just learned about something. And even funnier, I remember how not a long time ago, we were all making fun of hipsters and "know it all" people. How annoying and fake people who just already know everything can be (because we know they just don't). So being on trend... can also be a trend ?

Im from brooklyn and lived in new york my whole life. Now im in maryland its so different no one here has a sense of style. I dont look online or even know whats in style now i stick to certain brands that fit my style. Rite now i got only Ralph Lauren and Nudie jeans. The high end coat have no branding but the quality is just dope. Most people in nyc is wearing moose knuckles, Montclair, canada goose or mackage. I love those brands. But definitely getting 2 canada goose this year.

Love your channel. I’m excited that there’s so much color coming in for spring. From hot pinks to pastels. As a black woman and lover of a bright color I can’t wait to wear them all. My hot take is that pants will become liberated and it’s gonna be okay to wear wide legged, straight or skinny. Why not just wear the pant silhouette that looks best on you with the outfit you’re rocking? In the days of skinny, I wore wide legged linen pants in the summer. Today, I’m not afraid of wearing a skinny pant. Off trend? Don’t care. If you don’t like it, let me borrow your wallet and I’ll change.

I have an idea about people being obsessed with trends and that is it’s because nowadays by advancement of technology you can create whatever you like and whatever comes to your head really easy so that helps us to create more various things with various materials. So it means you can create new things a lot faster than before so every season or every year has something new to surprise us and to be trendy and makes us buy them and spend our money to experience new things and trends.

I was heavily influenced by trends throughout middle school and early high school. Mostly because it was all I ever saw in school from the other kids. Back in the early 2010’s you would literally get roasted if you wore anything other than Jordan’s/Nike and it was annoying. Costed me a couple hundred dollars just trying to fit in lol

In my case I do like Bows and clogs, but generally less do to the trendiness as an overall aesthetic thats a staple. For example bows, off shoulder tops, mirrorshades, clogs, and darker Earth tones. With ocassional lime green.

This was a really good take on trends. Idk why but I’ve been getting a little bit interested in fashion again. But you’re right I don’t want to waste my money on fads. Especially in this economy. I want to invest in functionality, quality, comfort and aesthetics. I want to know that the pieces I invest in will stand the test of time. I also want to actually feel like myself wearing the clothes I buy all the time. And u know social acceptance is nice. And idk it’d be cute if some of those pieces lasted long enough to be handed down to my kids one day because they thought some of those pieces were cool too u know. I recently rewatched ‘The Devil wears Prada’ and it made me realise how 1. You can’t let them get to you. 2. Cheese cube diet and body image messaging is wild and very unsafe and 3. How cyclical fashion is. It’s cool that fashion in 2006 isn’t radically different to 2024 I still find a lot of what was worn back then stylish today. As verified by Pinterest, Insta, tiktok, RU-vid and the rise of trends like y2k. The trend these days seems to be try anything and see who follows/relates and copies and may the most popular experiment or reinterpretation win. Tbh I don’t like that how you dress can offer you different treatment, but I guess that’s the way this world works. I feel weird that social acceptance is a beautifully ugly human need. Why is it cool to be cool? Who decides cool? Who is the Miranda Priestly of 2024? Why am I writing this comment? The reason why I look at fashion trends, is because I want to find special pieces I could use.

I usually sit trends out for a couple of months keep my eye on it and if it’s still around I get fully on board (aka spend money on it) 😂

Fashion (as a product) is about Ego. Fashion trends simply facilitate this human drive for Ego. Social media addresses overlapping needs with fashion, because people can garner validation for their ideas, belongings, etc. at a massive scale. I think this is where "online only" fashion trends live -- their style conversation simply exists solely over the Internet, and doesn't cross over.

I think another level to this is how many people choose trends with almost a "process of elimination" mindset. For me I thought this way more before I was interested in fashion, but I think when something gets really, really popular, we learn to associate it with a type of person or an age group, and that can often drive people away from certain items/colors/silhouettes. And sometimes it will drive people to the next newest thing, because it's something they don't have any associations with yet.

I think I'm a bit chronically online when it comes to fashion bcos we literally discuss about trends here 😂 I bet no one in my circle won't care the WHY. they just follow the herd!

@drewjoiner .. your videos always make me think!! My biggest fear with the way that trends are moving is the loss of true individuality. It feels like being "different" is commodified. Then when something innovative and inventive enters the building... people create the formula to emulate it, and then it fizzles out because its not individual enough to be cool anymore. There's nothing wrong with the concept of that... but with social media, it spreads like wildfire and the originator it gets lost in the derivatives of their own idea (unless they're famous). The world says "be different! share your ideas!!" and then copies yo swag and forgets about you. Like putting pins on your Adidas Samba tongue... some girl thought that would be a cool idea, (which it really is) she posted it to TikTok, it got millions of views... and now I can't find a pin at a thrift store anymore. It's kinda like a snake eating its own tail.

I only got into fashion a year or so ago when I started respecting myself more. I have been suffering from terrible self esteem and self-image for a long time and I didn't care about what I was wearing because I just didn't feel like it mattered. Why dress up when I feel ugly? It took me 30 years to discover that it also works the other way around. I could feel a lot less ugly when I feel good about my outfit at least. Fashion has been an important building block in my journey to a positive self-image. Feeling this negatively about myself for a long time has made me somewhat immune to trends. I have long given up on being trendy, cool or fresh. As someone who barely spends time on quick, trend-based socials like TikTok, I got to discover my own sense of style without being influenced by trends much. I also live in a rural Dutch town where there's nobody to mirror off of, leaving me to find my style by myself, with some help from RU-vid. RU-vid can also be a confusing place. There's cool men's fashion youtubers that advice and support finding your own style (including this one), but there's also a lot of toxicity. "Do THIS or women won't find you attractive!". "DON'T WEAR THIS or women will hate you". The toxic alt-right manosphere is in full swing on some of these channels and I imagine it can be quite harmful especially to young guys trying to find their style. In the end, trends are nothing but a way to fit in. Do you really have Samba's in your closet because you like them or care about the vegan stuff? Or did you pull out your wallet because other people are wearing them? To me, the latter isn't really a good reason. I understand it because I fully lived the reality of not fitting in and what it can do to you when you're in a place like high school, but it's seldomly a good way to make decisions. I really don't like the look of Sambas, so I never got a pair. I bought about 10 pairs of sneakers since getting into fashion and maybe one of them might be considered trendy, but I love all of them. Sometimes I hear about trends and I usually find out that they're the opposite of my wardrobe. Slim fit jeans are apparently not cool anymore and I had just gotten into them because I think I look nice in them since I've lost some weight. I didn't throw them out. I still think I look nice in them and I really try not to care what others think of it too much. It can be hard, but in the end I think the confidence of feeling good about your own outfit will make you happier than the short-term appreciation of random strangers you get for wearing that week's trending piece. Besides, at a certain point when trends get too big, everyone starts to look the same. I might not be trendy, but I'm eccentric and genuine and I like that. It also saves a lot of money. I only shop sales and it allows me to wear nice quality clothes that I personally like on a budget. They may be out of style, but they make me feel good. I'm not saying trends are all bad. If somebody is scared to try something out and it becomes trendy, finally allowing them to give it a shot, that's a good thing. The trend of men finally being allowed to wear jewelry and even women's clothing is cool, for example. I just feel like they tend to go overboard and it can become a thing where in a few years, you're judged or ridiculed for nót wearing jewelry. I guess I'm too idealistic for dreaming of a world where everyone can just wear what makes them happy without judgement. Anyway, good content once again! Keep it up.
