For 2024 Ford refreshed the F-150 and some of the changes impacted fuel economy on the different engine options.
In this video I compare the 2.7l Ecoboost V6 vs the 3.5l Powerboost vs the 5.0l V8 Coyote in identical XLT 302a 5.5 ft box trucks to try to compare apples to apples.
-Each truck was set at blue cruise 70mph for the 17.7 mile loop. The results were really close between each engine.
If you are interested in this truck here is a link to it.

All very good engines and all good fuel economy for a full-size crew cab pick up. I'll go with the 5.0 and the added payload that it offers.

Negative. I’d go with the 3.5 EB. The 5.0 wasn’t originally designed as a truck engine whereas the 3.5 was. Also the 5.0 now has cylinder deactivation and we all know how that’s going with GM….

5.0L was ruined in the 2018 model year and beyond. My 2018 was nothing but problems with oil consumption and a clunky transmission. When they went to dual and port fuel injection with a sprayed on cylinder liner, they ruined that motor. My 5.0L on my 2013 was flawless.

I own a 2015 XLT with a 2.7L and it's at124,000 miles. Had one issue since new with a fuel pump (warranty), otherwise solid truck. I don't tow 15,000 pound trailers on a daily basis, but I have no issue pulling my 23' Robalo at highway speed several times a month or taking a classic car to a show. The previous truck was a Chevy with a 5.3, great as well. Key to any vehicle is religious maintenance, especially oil changes. It's really personal preference and what you do with your truck.

As an RV owner, I need high payload, that 19xxlb payload on the 5.0 was exciting... LOL. plus, my daily commute (~100 miles round trip) I would rather have the 5.0. @@wasupfool5692Cylinder deactivation being the cause is a common myth. The new 7.3 Godzilla has had serious lifter issues - no cylinder deactivation to blame. For the Hemi’s, it seems more related to VVT. Overall it seems like a higher volume oil pump would help more than anything else.

I have had 2 - 2.7L, 2-P.B's 1 3.5L E.B. and 1 5.0L Only the 1 2.7 and 1 3.5 L had the 10 speeds and obviously both P.B.'s had the 10 speeds. Having the generator is a huge additional feature specially for folks in Florida with hurricanes. Having the A/C compressor be electric is awesome. Can keep the car cool when the engine is not running. In Florida when Power goes out we can use the truck and not have to worry about having a separate generator. I'd love to see it in a 5.0 V8 configuration.

I haul mostly network cabling installation equipment in the bed, and do not tow. What model year, engine and grade do you recommend? I would like to have some of the newer active safety features such as the automatic emergency braking system to avoid front collisions, but not as critical as long-term reliability and durability. Any suggestions for a late model F-150 with Direct and Port Injection. Also, what immediate and affordable engine and transmission mods for reliability and durability are recommended? I’m not looking for more power, just long-term reliability and durability as I don’t have too much money and need a truck for work and personal use. Thank you!

While I can’t really complain about the 2.7, the driving experience is 10x better with the 5.0. The 2.7 will get up and go, but you really need the boost from the turbos so it feels like you have to get more on the throttle. The 5.0 just feels to take far less effort to achieve the same acceleration. I’ve yet to really stretch the legs on the 5.0 on a long drive but did get 23.8 mpg on a 45 mile highway drive cruising 73 mph the day after getting it which is right on par with Fords rating. The added bonus of the 5.0 is the beautiful sound of its exhaust. Something the 2.7 will never have.

@CTECH-REVIEW I'm sorry but an 18 mile loop is not enough for an accurate fuel consumption test imo.Atleast 50 miles with a considerable portion of stop and go would be ideal

Great review, thank you for the information. I'm currently renting a Powerboost version (courtesy of Enterprise), while my car is in the shop. I was never into pickup trucks and have never been in the market for one living in suburban NJ. However, as Enterprise only had this, a Ram pickup (hate Chrysler products) and a Corolla available for rent, I figured I'd give the F150 PB a go. Though I've only had it for less than 12 hours, I'm amazed that this thing as actually more fuel efficient than our 24 MDX SH-AWD. Needless to say, we may look to add this to our 'fleet' within the next year or so.

Love the channel! I’m in the market for a new truck and your videos are very helpful! I’m also a Michigan guy living near AA. I pull a 7.5k lb camper about 6 times a year so payload is important. What is it that gave the 5.0 over 1900 lbs? A specific pkg or something? That’s the best payload I’ve seen on a 1/2 ton and I’ve been paying attention to that for several years. Thanks!

The PowerBoost engine is the 3.5 ecoboost engine with an electric motor added between the transmission and engine. Ford could not get rid of the 3.5. For this reason.

I don't think the Power Boost F-150 is a good idea in places that have extreme heat or cold, which is basically all over the place. That battery adds weight, complexity & a higher price tag & will not really do it's job in extreme climates. It does seem like a good idea as an overland truck for camping & stuff with all of it's outlets & things. I'm still sticking w/my 3.5L F-150 for now.

5l and 3.5L both had 3.73 gears. the 2.7L had 3.55 gears not apples to apples the 2.7L will run lower rpm and do better with that 3.55 ratio. the 3.73 is better for towing. lol then you compare a 3.7L hybrid real apples to apples lmao lol lol

Here is a question I cannot answer myself online! I see the 5.0 in the video with the 19xx lb. payload only has the tow package and NOT the max tow package. What components would the max tow package have added to the truck and would it have reduced the payload some? Build and price doesn’t always tell you what the packages include. Thanks in advance for your answer!!
@CTECH-REVIEW

Thanks for watching. Typically max tow gets you a higher GVWR rating, the 9 3/4 inch rear axle, a beefier rear spring pack and higher GAWR!
