Passport owner here. It really doesn't bother me how this video ended. I have the Elite (Touring in Can) with just regular road tires. It's just a great, roomy vehicle that does very well in snow (which is good because Im in Canada). With snow tires it's an absolute beast in the snow. Awesome review as usual and I was pretty pumped to see this video as I just took delivery of a 2024 Passport Trailsport 2 weeks ago! A few things to add is that that front skid plate only covers the oil pan and is an extra accessory (some dealerships add that on) and the tow hitch and wiring ran me $900 installed at the dealership. What I was not told is that the extra transmission cooler which runs an additional $1000 installed was also necessary to ensure I can safely tow 5K pounds. I’m gonna get that installed at some point but what I can say is that my Passport is easily handling our latest Nebraska Blizzard and snow mode works well! Thanks again Ryan for making this video!

I'd like a do-over, please. You already showed the Passport to be quite capable in previous videos. As you pointed out in this one, the front end was bottomed out and stuck. Not knowing that, you floored it. If one butted up to a brick wall and floored it, I think any transmission would protest. Any number of factors could have caused the PP to bottom out compared to others: lower approach angle, different wheel base possibly causing a steeper angle when hitting the rut, deeper rut from prior runs... Anyway, my '20 PP that I picked up used has been great and I'm confident it's plenty capable for snow on roads and able to take established dirt roads to camps and hiking trails. The combination of the good AWD system and the on-road manners are the right balance for me. I really like your videos and enjoy your style of reviewing, including your giddy laughs when the good stuff happens.

I 100% agree, we observed during the extreme Snow challenge, that when Toyota RAV4 Transmisson protested over-heating. You pulled back, reset and then proceeded again. It's good to know you had challenges and expected more from a Trail Sport Trim package. So my question why the bailout on the test? Was it the level of protest by the Honda sensors alone or concern the system was going to get damaged and this was a loner Honda?

I'm wondering if what's happening is a side effect of taking an AWD system designed for performance (SH-AWD) and not tweaking it for the endurance needed for sustained trail demands. I still love my '22 Passport Trailsport though as it's very fun to drive on the road and dirt roads, and an absolute beast in winter conditions around here on winter tires. I enjoy how i-vtm4 has no hesitation or delay so on even icy roads it's very confident feel. And quite some nice storage underneath the floor in back is great for winter/emergency supplies. My only complaints are that the vehicle is wide and/or there isn't a smaller version with i-vtm4, and that the transmission shifting decisions are a bit inconsistent. Oh and the driver assistance tech is pretty awful. I turned off automatic cruise control because it would constantly be adjusting rather than maintaining a steady speed. The only issue I had was the dreaded infotainment sound static-y thing due to some connectors but I think they finally got that sorted out so hopefully 2024 models don't run into that.

Someone mentioned this video to me and as someone that owns a 2019 Honda Passport with 139K on the odometer, and has driven with many other ZF9 equipped Passport/Pilot/Ridgeline drivers, it appears you have a defective Honda. We’ve never seen this issue on the trail, and prior to this review, you haven’t seen it either. Remember your first review, you took the Passport on the crosscut hill and you pushed the passport hard to get up it. Prior to, no other AWD was able to get up that obstacle, and in your G-wagon review it had to be triple locked to crawl up (although I’m sure if you used more momentum, it would have made it in standard 4WD with traction control). So, I do have a friend that had his Passport give a “transmission problem” warning while he was driving cross country. He took it into a Honda dealership and he was told that his ZF9 transmission was “OVERFILLED”. There’s a bleed valve on the ZF9, and after removing the excess fluid, the vehicle was operational again. From all the testing you’ve done on this platform, you know it was capable of getting through this. It appears that you didn’t get the “AWD system HOT” warning, which is just a rotational sensor and not an actual heat sensor. That points to a defective transmission. Really unfortunate Honda would provide you with a vehicle in that condition.
@drivingsports
@drivingsports 7 месяцев назад
I KNEW you'd show up. Should have thrown it into the video. "And... here's... JonDZ..." lol. I was wondering if Honda has made their sensor threshold lower on this newer model. Activating protections well before it's needed. I say that since TFL had the same exact issue with their press sample (different cars, same equipment). Also, like you say, I've pushed them harder in the past and never had this issue. (But without being side-to-side it's hard to know for certain just how "hard" the internals are getting pushed in any scenario.) In the end its just disappointing that Honda hasn't yet given the Passport the same amount of re-engineering they gave Pilot. Not to mention the lack of tranny cooler and hitch that are both standard on TrailSport Pilot.
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 7 месяцев назад
@@drivingsports A passport with a “transmission problem” warning ⚠️ needs to be taken to the dealership ASAP. This isn’t a warning that’s going to pop up because because the vehicle ran into adversity. This isn’t the same as an “AWD system Hot” warning. This doesn’t have anything to do with threshold adjustments. Again, this is a completely different warning, and it points to a manufacturer defective transmission, or maybe an overfilled transmission. If it’s the later, there needs to be better quality control. The 2024 Passport Trailsport is mechanical identical or at the very least similar. Even before installing the OEM transcooler on my Passport, I never had a transmission overheated warning. Honestly, I don’t think it does much on the trails, and is more suited for highway towing where air is constantly getting rammed into the cooler. Unfortunately, the 2023 Pilot Trailsport doesn’t have a transmission cooler either, and driving up trails in Colorado, a much lighter pilot with much less overland gear was showing higher transmission temperatures than my ZF9 equipped Honda. We observed that the fans don’t turn on until temps get into the 200F+ range. Actually, I did an April fools joke 2 years back where I faked a transmission problem by pulling the shifter harness. So, maybe there’s an issue with the harness wiring.

Since others have mentioned the other channel also having the transmission issue, I'm going to let this one go. I will say that watching the other clips, im not sure if you took a different line. Or has the trail already gotten more difficult because of those previous vehicles? I just cant fathom that the air dam of the PP is less than the crown or Palisade which is why my comment above. I understand that you did three launches which could have strained the tranny and you didnt seem to be moving alot for air flow, but i think the overheat issue is just silly. Could the system, perhaps, know that you were not moving forward because the airdam was scraping so it threw in the codes to let you know to stop and get out of the car so you can evaluate the situation? My PP Elite has the 5k lb tow package which adds the tranny cooler. I bought TS takeoffs and added WildPeaks. Ive been in Big Bend and had a blast with those trails. I go to fluffy sandy besches driving around for a while with no issues. Ive even been at an offroad park and again no issues. Im going to say that im disappointed at the results here.

iVTM-4 is known for overheating and throwing error messages. I don't think it's meant for continous, heavy off-road use. The rear torque-vectoring diff doesn't have a lot of cooling capacity. It requires frequent fluid changes with Honda-specific gear oil. The front chin is too low. I catch mine (Ridgeline) on tall curbs. These are good for snow and some sand. I'm a surburban warrior, so that's fine with me. Also, these feel wide because they are wide. 78 inches is about an inch shy of a half-ton. Remember, 80"+ requires clearance lights like Raptors.

As a PP Elite owner who put in TS wheels and Wildpeak tires who also drove the car on several off road rocky, sandy, and/or mud trails, I disagree with your statement. I have never seen those messages. In this case, the system somehow found out that the front was scraping and the vehicle wasn't moving forward so it told the driver to stop driving and maybe look around. Quite intelligent if you ask me.
@aaronbehindbars
@aaronbehindbars 7 месяцев назад
@@SlowRollaAE82Just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't mean it isn't an issue. Clearly, the issue occurs when you are in situations where you are asking for sustained periods of torque transfer and that overheats the clutches in the rear diff. The temperature sensor registers higher than normal operating temps and stops vectoring power to save the components from physical damage. It isn't that sophisticated to know the front end is up against an obstacle. It's literally just the computer reading wheel speed sensors figuring out how fast the vehicle is moving and where you try to divert power. It's a great system and very advanced in terms of on-demand AWD systems, but it isn't robust like a true off-road 4wd setup. The point of my comment is that these are not heavy-duty off-roaders. They have low ground clearance and it is easy to stuff the nose into dirt berm or high center which is going to tax the AWD system. That AWD system isn't designed for such use. It isn't what I'd call a defect, but a limitation or shortcoming. Multiple journalist who have tested the Passport, Pilot, or Ridgeline have experienced AWD system overheat warnings. Maybe it's misuse/abuse, but I don't think they are necessarily doing something that some owners wouldn't try themselves. At a minimum, it's useful to know how far a vehicle's capabilities go. Journalists aren't going to intentionally abuse a vehicle knowing that such behavior jeopardizes their future ability to have access to press fleet vehicles.

@uncalm
@uncalm 7 месяцев назад
You're right! While not perfect, brake vectoring has huge advantages. It requires no additional specialized parts (i.e., multiclutch differentials like this Passport), which means there is no additional equipment to: 1. fail, 2. add weight, 3. add complexity/service cost. It's basically just software. As long as your brakes and driveline components can handle the torque being transferred through them by individually braking a wheel and your motor can generate enough power to overcome the braked wheel(s), it tends to be much more capable in practice than many people expect.

@24:54 I think this is why Honda ditched the ZF9 to Honda 10spd in the new Pilot. Glitched like this and transmission overheating is killing the fun. On Hondas defense , true that having all those clutches is no joke. Its not made for rough use like a 4WD system you had on your 4Runner. On the other hand this is pretty capable for 99% of the owners need imo. Excellent video as always..!! .

@@uncalmthanks. How has your experience been with the Outback Wilderness. I have owned a few Subarus so I know they are like tanks in snow! I was led to believe that the Passport as well as the Pilot were more reliable than Turbo Subarus with CVTs due to the naturally aspirated V6 and regular transmission.
@uncalm
@uncalm 6 месяцев назад
@@AJSparacio413 Overall a great car. My only real complaint is the infotainment. It's slow and clunky but if you're using CarPlay/Android Auto the whole time it is mostly fine. The other negative I can think of is the poor city fuel economy. I get around 20mpg city. This is usually made up for by the great highway economy, usually at or near 30mpg. I've driven it on a few longer trips and the 30mpg highway combined with the 18.5 gallon tank has given me a range of, no joke, ~500 miles, which is amazing. Plenty of power, and it comes on down low, too. All of the torque is available at 2,000rpm, which is where most people are driving when they're in the city anyway. Nice soft and compliant ride. I think the 17" wheels and thicker tires are definitely an upgrade in that regard, even if you never take it off road. The extra sidewall helps with bumps. I'm not sure what to think about the reliability question. I think Honda has a great reputation, and a lot of this kind of thing is mostly that: reputation. Subarus have not had head gasket issues since the early 2000s, but yet the rumor persists that all turbo Subaru motors are unreliable. People don't like CVTs because Nissan in particular put out a terrible product and everyone associated CVTs with those garbage Nissan units. Are modern Subarus more reliable or less reliable than modern Hondas? I have no idea. I know Honda just recalled 2.5M cars for defective fuel pumps, but I wouldn't call Honda unreliable. My family has owned 4 Subarus (2 turbo, 2 NA) and 4 Hondas over the last 40 years, maintained them well, and we've had almost no issues with any of them. When it comes to Japanese cars in particular, I think they're mostly pretty similar. Where you start to get real reliability differences is when you start to compare to American and German, in particular.

Kinda bummed the passport croaked before getting a proper chance to be evaluated. I have a 2019 Passport and once got this same slew of warnings after an oil change. The vehicle is in a crippled state when this happens. Turned out to be a faulty sensor (exhaust sensor I believe, but can't remember atm) tripping up the ECU. Replaced the sensor and haven't seen it since. To say the Ascent or Toyota Crown can do this and not the passport is a little misleading, since they gave you a defective vehicle - a properly running passport would've been fine through there!

At the end of the day Passport and Pilot are glorified versions of the Odyssey minivan. Incomparable to the TLC (which is actually not, because of being in fact the mid-size Prado, and the "true" LC is the 300-series, ditched in the US market) in terms of the off-road capability, same like the LC is no better than these Hondas on pavement, overall ride comfort and cabin space.

They might make a new passport based off the pilot, give it a lift and the rest of the pilot ts treatment. this pp is the old pilot shortened, but i think it should be alot less $ w the dated tech. its worth it to spend more and get a pilot. honestly whats the point of a new pp? to make a whole new vehicle thats a little smaller i guess. there are alot of other 2row midsize suvs in this segment like the grand c and outback so they prob will, but why not just offer a 2 row pilot? u could keep a fullsize spare underneath, sleep in the back comfortably, have a ton of storage underneath the floor too. i guess the pp needs a removable airdam and 245/65/18s would help. 60's series tires on any offroad trim is too small. the trailsport rugged roads concept is what the pp should be albeit less mpg if u r willing to make the trade for more OR capability. otherwise big fail on the DSTV offroad course! hope to see a pilot ts tackle it someday w the longer wheelbase.

You have to manually select things like the gas mileage meter or the compass, which I find very annoying. The vehicle compass and your gas mileage meter should both be visible on the dash display by default, and at the same time. . Could care less about a front camera.
