2024 KTM/Husky TBI Fuel Economy - Pushing The Limits

Testing the fuel range on the new TBI bikes. It seems around 60 miles of just shy of 100km is the farthest you can go on a tank of fuel. This ride was 114km or 60.5 miles, 805 and Tech Enduro packed 850ml of extra fuel and just made it back to the trucks by coasting on the last downhill trail. I packed about 1300ml extra and had a little fuel to spare at the end of the day. The fuel capacity on these bikes is 8.5L so 15% less than the old carb versions so it's not so much they use a lot more fuel, the fuel capacity is more the problem.
* Please note I will not discuss locations publicly in the comments section.

Glad you noted tank size as I was thinking of my carved model and then realized (thanks to you) that I have a much larger tank! I typically max out at 60 kms (I am 61…that’s my excuse…LOL) so not much more than that for my rides. For your bikes, I would say that is pretty good range for a smaller tank.

The total primo set up that I've found - delete the oil injector for $40 by the TSP oil delete connector - then install Acerbis 3.2 gal tank. The tank looks amazing, never gets in your way and plenty of fuel. You don't have to delete the injector but more dependable. You can use the Acerbis tank from a 2023 XC. If you delete the injector you're all done. IF you don't delete, you have to remove the fuel tank to fill oil tank, which only takes 5 min. Still a nice set up. Cheers. Thanks Greg, another great vid!!!
@williamcrotts7054
@williamcrotts7054 19 дней назад
If you buy the tank for the TE,XCW you don't have to remove the tank. Why would you want to delete the oil injection ?
@onthethrottle7104
@onthethrottle7104 19 дней назад
@@williamcrotts7054 Good question and thanks for asking - You want to delete that cheap injection system because they are not dependable and when that little cheap oil pump goes out you fry your motor (bottom end especially). If you premix your fuel you never have to worry about the cheap pump or something else failing like that 2 cent transfer tube. Also, the Acerbis tanks for the XCW or TE are limited and lots of places don't carry them, but you can get the one that fits the XC. I hope that helps.
@williamcrotts7054
@williamcrotts7054 19 дней назад
@@onthethrottle7104 I had no problem getting the tank for my XCW, Slavens has them in stock. I've owned 2 TPI's and 1 TBI and I've had zero problems with injection and know of no one who has had a problem, and my dealer is the largest in the western United States .
@PNWEnduro
@PNWEnduro 19 дней назад
Premix is definitely safer but I feel the oil injection system is reliable. I also like it because I only need to bring one jerry can of fuel for both the tbi and the 4t.
@onthethrottle7104
@onthethrottle7104 19 дней назад
@@PNWEnduro No doubt it's easier not to mix fuel. The oil injection has gotten more reliable although they still use the same $100 injector motor. FYI, take a flashlight and look at where your injector motor is located, look real closely. 9 out of 10 new bikes have small leaks at the fittings, especially where the little rubber 90 comes off the injector motor.
@ml5955
@ml5955 20 дней назад
KTM just needs to put 2.7 or 2.8 gal tanks on their bike, or offer it as an option. For us in the western US it is not uncommon to ride 60 + miles at a time. 20 years ago the tanks were in the 2.8 - 3.0 gal size. If your rides consists of sub 40 miles the peanut (MX) tanks are good.
@PNWEnduro
@PNWEnduro 20 дней назад
The 10L (2.6gal) tanks would probably be enough for most rides on these bikes. I know the TM TBI bikes can be ordered with a bigger thank and they look nice and are not overly bulky.

Nice ride area! I got really bad fuel economy with the stock Map on my 2024 KTM 300 EXC TBI. I then changed to a Two Stroke Performance ERM Map and medium compression head and the fuel economy improved significantly (about the same as a TPI now). With the TSP Map the bike performs much better too. Not cheap mods, but worth considering...

@TokyoOffroad I saw your video where you mentioned the mileage improvement. Then I see where @PNWEnduro rode the exact same trail on the exact same day against a TSP tune and got the exact same mileage. You guys aren't helping my dilemma any 😂 I used TPITuning on my TE, and best I can tell, my economy stayed the same as stock, around 25mpg. I do like the way it runs better, I feel like it REALLY woke the top end up. White map feels like the stock green map, and the new green map is spirited! I also copied Dirt Bike TV and modified/installed an XC head insert, that seemed to be beneficial also, a little crisper everywhere, even warmup seems noticeably improved, no mileage gain though. I have the TSP PV cover sitting on my bench waiting for install. I ride mostly at 6k-7k foot elevation, go up to 12k on occasion.

I recently did my first “long desert ride“. My fuel light came on at about 43 miles. I ran out of fuel at 53 miles. Honestly, very disappointed. I lean the bike over to try to get more fuel into the area of the fuel pick up and it helped a little bit but very little. The only answer I see is caring, extra fuel or putting a larger tank on. I had heard the stock map and the bike was very rich and that you could get additional mileage with a remap but I’m not certain that’s accurate. I do ride quite a bit of desert so I think fuel mileage is definitely affected by the sand versus hard packed soil. Appreciate your videos and I’m jealous of your riding area!

With the larger tank, all the extra fuel is carried up high so it would not make a difference with the fuel pump. It's not an issue when you are in the trails anyway, only if you are on a road when getting low on fuel. Personally, I'd rather just carry fuel bottles and not buy a large tank.

These new TBI's are frustrating! I get 40ish miles before the (stock tank) fuel light comes on. Add in the location of the fuel pump, meaning your now trying to aggressively get fuel into the belly of the fuel pump rezy. So your low on fuel and riding aggressively! Not a good scenario! Add in the rigid frame and I ended up selling it! Good luck! I'm back on the old frame TPI bike, yeah I know the TPI aint perfect but at least I can get 90 miles out of a big tank (riding aggressively) and the chassis doesn't feel rigid/edgy! KTM made a step backwards IMO...
@PNWEnduro
@PNWEnduro 20 дней назад
You are not low on fuel when the fuel light comes on, you still have 40% left at that point, as long as you are on trails, fuel will get into the reservoir. People assume low fuel light means you are almost out but it's not the case on these bikes. I like the new chassis better than the old one, personal preference.

I was one of the other bikes. You can burn much more into it than 1/4 left. Was actually surprising it was still running with the pickup in the middle of the tank now. This would only be a problem if you were riding on a flat road where the gas couldn't splash around. 60 miles was ok for me without adding fuel and not coasting. I bring gas but just dump it in as soon as there's space in the tank not a huge issue and cheaper than an aftermarket tank
