Nice, brief comparison. I'm on my fourth Mazda, a 2023 CX-50 Preferred Plus. For background, my first Mazda was in May 2016, a 2016 Mazda3 hatchback Touring. This was followed by a 2018 CX-5 Touring AWD. That was followed by a 2020 CX-5 Touring FWD. At the end of November 2022 I leased the CX-50. None of these are turbo models. As for the CX-50 versus the CX-5, both are great vehicles. Ride, handling, and ergonomics are excellent. As for why I went with the CX-50 this time around, first is that having had two CX-5s I wanted something different, second is the fact that the CX-50 is longer and wider than the CX-5, especially in the cargo area. One thing that I feel Mazda goofed on the CX-50 is omitting the double-pane side windows that the CX-5 has. In the CX-50 I can hear the water running along the sides of the windows, wither when raining or using the windshield washer. For the price of the CX-50 that should have been included.

I prefer, and bought the CX-5. I looked at the cx-50 and didn't like that thick seam running down the center of the seat. It lacks the independent rear suspension from the CX-5, The extra sound deadening in the CX-5 is great for when I go on trips with my father as he's hard of hearing, and we can talk easily at 75 mph without having to shout.

@@JB-yx9gr Yes, do the research. The CX-5 has what they call acoustic glass (Double thick) to deaden the outdoor noises. You see, when the 2nd gen was designed, Mazda asked owners of gen 1 cars to say what they didn't like about it. Biggest problem was outside noise. Mazda added 150lbs of sound deadening material, double thick windows on the front and driver and passenger windows, double door seals, and rubber seals around the engine compartment. So, yes, the CX-50 has DIFFERENT windows than the CX-5.

​@@timingenkamp3973I have the CX-50 Meridian. It's just fine at higher speeds, in fact, quite quiet. Specs dont always translate to reality.

@@anthonyfrombelow Do facts translate to reality? CX-5 has "audio glass" (Double thick with an air pocket in between) on the front windshield, driver side window, and passenger side window. It also has double seals on each door. The engine compartment also has rubber seals to silence engine noise. There is also sound deadening material behind the wheel wells, and in the headliner as well. I know for a fact that the CX-50 does NOT have audio glass.

@@LANDIIIIIOFIIIIIFIREnah the cx-50 doesn’t feel as good to drive. it doesn’t have independent rear suspension so it feels a lot rougher.. would be better off-road though..

Good review. I’m in the process of considering one of these. I prefer the exterior of the CX50, I think Mazda was going for a rugged off roader as the interior styling is what I’d describe as more rugged and less refined than the CX-5. I plan to drive the CX-5 premium plus this weekend.

Just purchased the '23 -50 w/Premium Plus trim, std 2.5L. Had a chance to take it on a long ride today to test out it's handling. Wow! This car is glued to the road, has no body sway when cornering/going around curves and accelerates nimbly. The more I drive it, the more I like it. I test drove the -5 a couple years ago (2022 model) and did not like it; it felt cheaply build and not very "solid" on the road. Also, body styling on the -50 is down right sexy!! Cheers!

I ordered the 2024 CX-50 Turbo Premium Plus (Zircon Sand, terracotta) vs the CX5. To me (FWIW) the CX5 is too girly and looks like an egg...similar to many CUVs out there. The CX-50 is more manly/sporty and hits the mark for versatility/comfort/capability without having to spend $20-40K more on a Porsche Macan, BMW X3/5, Audi Q5, Toyota Crown, etc. To each their own.

Cx50 ceiling height is low , windows are small feels like a station wagon. Cx5 more roomy if you're taller and its made in Japan . Cx50 made in the US.

Cx50 is just really for the looks. You give up so much that's offered in the cx5 and you also pay more. The cx5 at 34k your getting leather seats while the cx50 at 35k your just getting a panoramic sun roof.

@@oneskillpoint4669 also, I like the armrest position on the CX 50 better than the CX five I tend to rest my arm on the armrest when driving and I can’t do it in the CX 5 because it’s too short

More like rear torsion beam suspension instead multilink, or twin scroll turbo instead dynamic pressure turbo, or US assembly instead Japanese? Why some people is confused about “tecnology” in cars industry, believing that it means more glass and bigger screens?

CX 50 is mean to be a vehicle with better off road capability and so Mazda wants 2 stick with Torsion Beam Suspension as it’s more reliable for Off roading purpose though comprising on the ride quality…I m an CX-50 owner wit 30k miles in just 1 year…Anyday hands down CX-50 has better high speed dynamics and body roll over is literally NIL in CX-50… CX-5 has too much Body Roll and taking Corners feels really uncomfortable …Both r gud cars but question lies wit individual persons liking…

I had the navigation system installed in my new cx-5. Nice for overview, but my Google Maps is way better for easy navigation.

Mazda has gone backwards with the new platforms which is sad to say. I’ve owned a BN 3 A 2020 cx5 and now a 2023 Mazda3 and gone are the nice thud closing doors and quiet interior. Older platform doesn’t have any rattles but the new platform is terrible. Dash creaks and rattles, suspension crashed and jolts over bumps. The car is quieter but you can definitely notice the torsion beam. Anyone that says it doesn’t has no clue about cars. Test drove a cx60 and it was terrible. Drives rough and the switches and doors closing feels very backwards. It’s such a shame. I put a deposit on a cx5, Mazdas new platforms look more modern and better but they feel flimsy creaky and cheap.

Just starting research on these two, I’m confused, you said you put a down payment but it feels flimsy and cheap in the Sam sentence. Why would you buy one then??

@@guitarplayer4429 I put a deposit on a cx5 which is an older platform, I have a 23 Mazda 3 which is the new platform and I feel they have gone backwards. The switch gear and suspension tuning feel worse and firm. I also had an older Mazda 3 sp25 2018 model and that felt way more comfortable.

@@midiwrx thanx for the reply, but I am still confused, it sounds like your not very fond of it but you are going to buy one???? I test drive both the other day, and from my old suv they were both amazing, I know there may be better this and that but I am mostly worried about longevity with less problems, and I caught in this video (or other) that the 50 is not only made in Alabama but at a new plant in Alabama, not much time to work the kinks out. I first liked the rugged look of the 50 but because the 5 is a little nicer inside and made in japan and the suspension I am leaning towards it.

@@guitarplayer4429 sorry I’ll start again, I’ve owned a 2018 Mazda 3 and also a 2021 cx5 and now I’m currently driving a 2023 Mazda 3. My previous 2 cars were on the older platform and they drive and felt amazing. The doors closed nicely and all the buttons inside felt good and no squeaks or rattles. The suspension was awesome too. Not too firm but sporty. Now I’m driving a 2023 Mazda 3 and it feels horrible. All the new generation Mazdas are on the newer platform. The Mazda 3 cx50 cx60 and cx90 are all new generation and the designs are nicer but they don’t feel premium and the suspension is bad. There are lots of complaints atm on how they drive and they are really firm. My current 3 has heaps of rattles and squeaks and the suspension is so firm it’s unbearable. So I’ve put a deposit down on a cx5 before the new generation comes out as the cx5 is still on the old platform and I’m happy with that. Does that make sense?

@@midiwrx yes it does, as I am new to the new car wold, especially with the tech that goes into it, just as you are talking about old and new platform, like I said, me and my 17 YO test drove both and he seemed to like the 5 better and still does, and after more research (I’ve done so much I’m dizzy) it seems the CX-5 is the best value and as dependable as any other at this price, which a lot of them have a 3 cylinder and CVT. the interior is nicer and apparently made in Japan could/does make a difference, some reviewers Compare the 5 to more expensive SUV’s, we will test drive it again this weekend, I can’t wait to own one compared to what I drive now, waiting to the end of December to see if I can get a better deal. Thanx so much for your time I appreciate it.

Not disappointed that the CX-50 is not offered in Europe. I can choose between the CX-5 and CX-60. There is a huge price difference in the two offerings here in Finland. And the CX-60, is considerably larger than the CX-5. Definitely leaning towards the CX-5. No turbo CX-5 is offered in the gasoline version, but fuel efficiency is preferred over power in Europe. CX-5 for the win! 🔥🔥🔥👍
