While the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic may be more popular, the Mazda3 and Subaru Impreza offer their own distinct advantages. Today, I will explore both of them to find out which one is the best (non-hybrid) compact in the US.
Thank you, Royal on the Eastside and Royal South Toyota for letting me test drive the cars used in today's video.

A few years ago, I had a Subaru Impreza with a manual trans, and now I own a Mazda 3 2.5 GS FWD. IMO, the Mazda 3 is better for the following reasons: - More power - Better real-world fuel economy - Much better steering feel on center - Nicer interior - Better ergonomics - Better infotainment and interface - More reliable - Better transmission. The clutch on the Subaru was horrible. The only thing that the Impreza had over the Mazda is a more refined suspension. Unless you live down a fire-route in Alaska, look at a Civic or Mazda 3.

@@Unchainedmaple888 the Impreza has eight hard buttons/switches for the climate controls, not one of those count? I've had the Subaru RS for a few months and I'm very happy with it. As far as the infotainment screen, I would prefer a couple more physical buttons for the a/c controls, but I've gotten used to it. But at least it doesn't stick up on top of the dash like you see in hondas and toyotas. Drives great and looks great, definitely a subby fan, but the Mazda seems like a good car too.

I don't regrar it at all, the car rides and handles well and you can have fun with even with the CVT. And you can add some services with the app, so you can remote start it with you phone, which is a really good feature (6 months free, after that $4,99 month), and is worth it, you get access to more stuff as well.

These two along with a corolla hatch are my 3 choices to get after my 2013 Impreza Sport Lim. Impreza would be best for my camping and quite quiet and smooth driving, but it's cvt is hilarious when stepping on it and the huge tablet infotainment seems like a liability for distracted driving, along with worst mpg because it's full awd only. Cloth seating is also harder to clean. Corolla has a physical first gear in combo with it's cvt and not awd only, so it has better 0-60 and has great mpg, along with a decent physical/touch combo in it's infotainment. Probably the easiest to clean out of the 3. Downsides is it quite cramped toward the rear seating/cargo and it's a louder ride. Mazda is a "true" auto that gets a turbo on higher trims, decently more speedy. Physical only infotainment isn't an issue considering my 2013 imp is just a physical radio. Best highway driving. Downside is thin paint and more expensive/luxurious, wouldn't want to take it camping. So torn, but I have time to decide since I'm still saving some more before I buy.

I looked at the Mazda 3 hatchback, (the sedan doesn't work for me as my Telescope and other astronomy gear won't fit in it) but the visibility on that car is just atrocious. I get the idea of going too near-luxury for higher margins; I just don't find it particularly interesting - I kind of like the "honesty" of the Subaru. Also it just hurts to pay north of 30k for a torsion beam suspension in 2023. At least in my use case, a wagon that can do some light offroading to get to observing/fishing sites is all I need. Weirdly cross shopping the Integra, Impreza RS and the Prius.

Subaru impreza was more designed for a 25-30 year old family man that has kids and wants to get out outside once in a while, while mazda 3 for designed for adults in there 25-30s that are still trying to figure out life lol.

I wasn’t expecting such a polarized response in the comments. I test drove both recently and came away with the opinion that they were both very good. The Mazda feels better and I preferred the drivetrain. The Subaru has better sight lines and I fit in it. Much as I liked the Mazda, the roof line was way too low and there’s very little leg room in the rear. As someone who is 6’3” and frequently drives with passengers, that was a dealbreaker. I’d not enjoy being hunched over in the rear seat for more than a few minutes. The other factor that helped the Subaru is they had a model available within a months wait. Some of the others were quoting 5 to 16 month wait times. The local Toyota dealer openly told me they weren’t taking orders anymore. People seem to be holding used inventory hoping someone will pay MSRP for a year old with 20,000 km. Hopefully things go back to normal soon.
@jacobbeebe8259

I agree. I just test drove both and was pleased with both. Your thoughts matched up with mine. The room isn't a factor for me as I am 5'10" and hardly ever have passengers. Really enjoyed driving both cars and they each have tiny trade offs. Having trouble deciding which one to get. The plus side for the mazda was better fuel economy and a little more nimble and a touch faster. The major downside to mazda is that terrible rotary knob for entertainment screen.
@popuppete
@popuppete 2 месяца назад
@@jacobbeebe8259 if fuel economy is a factor for you, my real world economy is 8.8 L/100 km measured at the fuel pump (the car computer reads 8.4) I’m still happy with the Impreza but that is not poor economy for a compact car. Hopefully it gets a better as I am only at 9,000 km.

I definitely appreciate all your tests. Great stuff! Right now I'm mulling over the idea of a Subaru Impreza RS, but based on price I'm also looking at a VW GTI DSG, as they can be had for similar money. I know the GTI would destroy the RS in terms of performance, but then there's the AWD of the Subie, likely lower maintenance costs (no expensive DSG services)...it's a tough decision. I don't know if VW and Subie consider themselves competitors, but based on price and general market segment they definitely are. I need to brave the dealerships and start doing some test driving.
@lukemcdo
@lukemcdo 2 месяца назад
If you're going auto and don't need AWD, you should look at the Acura Integra A-Spec instead of the GTI -- it's basically a Civic SI with better trim and the option for a CVT. You could even decide you don't need the A-Spec. I'd test drive both the A-Spec and the base Integra (dunno how close you can get to MSRP but its MSRP is $32k pre-destination and all that).

I will never understand this line of thought... CVT is faster than the 6-spd auto, smoother than the 6-spd auto, yet somehow less fun. If you can acknowledge that a steady engine note means the engine is at its optimum power band, and the CVT is doing the adjusting to best use that power... Vs the engine having to go in and out of its power band to adjust for the set-gear transmission, which is less quick and less efficient... We might finally get past the CVT-sucks nonsense.
@Realistick

@@minnybiker4505 I see, I can try to explain my take then. For a car that is to be used as an appliance, it makes perfect sense. Which is why I don’t have beef with them. I just wouldn’t consider it in a car built to entertain. Not just because of the drone under acceleration but because of how they respond. A gear has a linear feeling. When the torque converter locks up, there’s a direct connection between the throttle and your acceleration. Enthusiasts love that feeling, therefore, most don’t like CVTs. People still just can't handle the monotone engine note of a CVT acceleration run, even if it's faster and more efficient. I think that's silly. interestingly enough, he also complained about the Mazda 6-speed transmission, as often not being in the correct ratio... something the Subaru CVT solves. (And it's faster). WOT the CVT drones, while being quicker, but how much of the time do you drive with WOT? I’ve found the powertrain in the RS to be very smooth and responsive- never notice the CVT (my first) other than it does exactly as I expect it to. My other car is a bugeyes WRX wagon and the RS is a fun, über comfortable and practical daily driver. Mazda 3 is too small for me with limited visibility but it’s a great compact.
@Realistick

I didn’t complain about it being slow at any point… I said it disappoints because of power delivery. I replied to you on a previous comment in more detail but it’s not just the noise. An automatic can lock the torque converter onto a gear, which results in a direct response from the throttle. Enthusiasts like that and assists in a car feeling “linear.” As a basic commuter, a cvt is great and you won’t hear me complain. In a car marketed as fun, and when compared alongside a mazda3, it’s a drawback.

The new WRX is ugly as can be. The rear end especially. Mazda wins on looks for sure.

Mazda beats Subaru in reliability and power. It also has a real automatic and has a better interior. Subaru fanboys keep whining about the Impreza having more room, which is true, but if space is so important then you probably shouldn't be looking at a compact car to begin with.

Subaru all the way.

This is barely even a comparison. The Mazda is far, FAR superior to the Subaru in every single aspect other than the all-wheel drive system. Mazda for me, hands down. There's no comparison.

I'm team mazda too but it's hard to deny the versatility and rough road comfort of the subie. It's also better to drive than it previously was too!

I have owned three Mazdas including a 3 and CX 30 and I would never buy a CVT, but the Subaru does have more interior space.

I respect your preference but dude... let's be more objective. The Mazda has the worst visibility of any modern hatchback, its rear end is a torsion beam suspension, and its backseat is not built for adults. Someone who knows a lot about cars would not agree this is "barely a comparison."
@sleeksilver
@sleeksilver 5 месяцев назад
@@coconut_bliss5539 torsion beam not, the Mazda out handles the Subaru. The rear seat is tighter, that is true. It will absolutely fit adults, just not tall ones. If a rear facing child seat can fit (it can), an adult can fit.

The Subaru’s symmetrical AWD system is superior, but the CVT is a Horrible transmission

You said it perfectly. Subaru AWD is way better but the cvt isn't great. The mazda AWD is very acceptable and still gets the job done. Both very comparable vehicles. Glad for the comparison. The comparison was very good.

Subaru Legacy is better value for money than both.

A much better value for sure, but I think there's more to the Impreza and the Mazda3 than that. I'd probably go turbo mazda3 out of the three!

The Legacy is truly slow with the base 2.5 engine and Subaru has yet to prove that it can build a reliable turbo.
