Sri lankan outfit was hand embroidered with thousands of tiny beads per one outfit. And as a sri lankan i can say it's a great representation of traditional upper class wear from 17th-18th century. ❤ Thank you for acknowledging the fine hardwork our local craftsmen put into the fit..

Haïtian here, after months of unrest we can finally celebrate something: FASHION AND ART!! Our country is known for it's intricate paintings, music and colorful fashion, so I am so happy they came up with these looks. Absolutely gorgeous. GOLD all around for Mongolia and Haïti!!!
Mongolia, Haiti and Sri Lanka were lovely! Also Philippines had a separate beautiful opening ceremony uniform, and the Sri Lankan bottoms are called “Sarongs”. I usually LOVE Indian designs, but these sarees are really giving government worker slash school teacher uniforms.
Exactly my feelings; for all three! Poland was not far behind; same as with Shri Lanka, Austria, and Turkey... they could have doubled up on medals for them all, ahah! Those are people of great taste and artistry and they know how to show it! I also went crazy with France's lapels. But the vest needed something serious about the arms... a great thing the athletes are much tanned. I understand their concept of the Effiel Tower shape, however. But the old look of the old-fashioned Air France hostesses needed perhaps a little bit more thinking. Enough of the soft shapeless for all occasions. There are so many ways to find comfort in clothing, and yet show pride in who and what we are, and/or represent!
@@catladyfromky4142 I don't love the teal and yellow -- I know those are the national colors based on the national color but they don't look good together
As a Sri Lankan I am IN LOVE with our team's hand-embroidered uniform!! Huge step up from 2020. To me it's really giving Kandyan royal/noble wear, and I think that was the idea. Stunning. Love the overall unisex aspect of them too. The "skirt" worn by men is a sarong, which is commonly worn in South/Southeast Asia and parts of Arabia and Africa. It's like a tube of fabric that's tied/folded in front. The main motif is a lotus flower, some are arranged into "chakras" that also look like lily pads. It's really neat The designer they chose, Lovi Ceylon, specializes in traditional style clothes such as the wedding dress, which is based on the aforementioned Kandyan royal attire. So it's a great fit! Bravo, mage rata!!! 🇱🇰💖
I think after this year with Mongolia getting so much press, other countries will be more creative with their outfits at the next Olympics. What a great way to get publicity for your country!
I used to have a friend who designed airline attendants uniforms and for the most part I thought they were cheesy and awful but I never said that to them
🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹! Proud Haïtian here! I've know about the uniform for weeks and was wondering if u were going to comment. And tadaaa! Here you are with a video. Also: the "print" is actually a painting created by a respected Haitian painter (Phillipe Doddard). To put it in perspective, my mom saw his name and gasped that he collaborated. Painting in my culture is a big deal. You don't walk into a household without some kind of art and then there's the best of the best and Doddard is one. He was asked to create something for the uniform. So this is custom.
with this detail the looks became even more impressive) Also love the shape of women's garment - while it may be not eveyone's cup of tea, the siluette looks like it would be very flattering to all the varying body shapes.
I don't mind they're probably paying for the sponsor after all. But I wish they didn't use full length track suits made of spandex and nylon because a lot of those Canadian athletes are going to be actually dying in the heat. They should have put them in cottons and linens and added a hat for fashion and sun protection.
I’m glad you included Team Sri Lanka. The skirts they were wearing are actually called sarongs. Typically, the draping styles for men and women have subtle differences. These outfits carry a rich history and have many stories to tell.
Proud Mongolian here. Really glad our fashion is getting global recognition, thanks to M&A. There is big discourse around the origins of the design within the locals, but I personally think it is very Mongolian and very amazing
Yes, it is Mongolian. Mongolian clothes are suitable for horse riding, archery etc. Thus, clothes have belts, tend to be tighter around belly area, to not forbid movement the body area is not too tight. Shoes are suitable for horse riding, great for walking on the difficult places like forest, desert, mountains. Plus, standing collars were in nomadic empires many centuries ago too. Those who are doubting the origin should have debate with the mother nature and warrior lifestyle.
Per team Poland. I'm happy you liked it! The collection was created by a brand from Poznań called Bizuu. Generally in previous years our team usually got more sporty looks, and they told the designers they had felt a bit too casual compared to others. Looking for more "elegant" inspirations, they turned to Polish sportswear from interwar period. The jumper is not really inspired by cricket, but by outfits worn by Polish athletes in the 20s and 30s. Tbh an average Pole wouldn't even be able to tell you the rules of cricket, so. Oh, and the flowery motifs are based on iconic (for us, at least) Koniaków lace.
Mongolia and Sri Lanka for the opening ceremony looks. I LOVED Turkey's tone on tonish opening look blazer and their podium looks. I want to to touch the fabric on those track suits!!! I'd want to wear Haiti's ceremony look. The print was gorgeous. This was a fun watch!!!
Team Sri Lanka outfit is also on point. However, Team Mongolia outfit really resonated with a lot of people because of how thoughtful and committed the whole outfit is. They picked a historical outfit and updated it with limited touches of modern aesthetic, ie the sleeves. The bags could have been square or plain but the attention they paid to the tassel for the bags speaks volumes about the sisters' commitment to detail. Team Guatemala is following team Mongolia footsteps. Haiti is also delivering as well!
As an Indian i am very disappointed . We have such rich history in traditional embroidery, textile yet what we got was school independence day uniform.
I feel very proud and happy as a Sri Lankan. Many people from foreign countries have chosen Sri Lanka's uniform, along with Mongolia and Haiti. Sri Lanka’s uniforms, created by Lovi Ceylon, are a nod to history. The white garments use silk, handmade embroidery, and beadwork to represent the looks of the royal courts of the 19th century. ❤️🔥
To me Indian male uniform looks very nice, light and modern. Suitable for summer. Women's clothes on the other hand is very underperforming. I agree that it lacks that indian luxury, embroidery and little details. Usually indian clothes are so extravagant. But this looks kind of plain. I understand that it is a sport event and maybe they desided to go minimalist. But still looks like indian cosplay dress from alibaba
As an Australian, I can honestly say our uniform is fug. I don't understand why Sportscraft didn't collaborate with an Aboriginal artist? It would have made the uniforms more interesting at least. Mongolia and Sri Lanka all the way! Gorgeous uniforms 😀
After having a bit of a look around the internet, the on-field uniforms designed by ASICS have much more obvious indigenous artwork features (the rugby uniforms for example). I also found that Sportscraft did actually collaborate with Aboriginal and Torres Straight Island artists to design the scarfs, pocket squares and handbags (albeit the inside has the print 🙃). There’s also apparently a “restriction” that says the opening ceremony uniform has to include a blazer. I really do wish indigenous designs were put more at the forefront for our opening ceremony uniform considering that is the event that most non-sports fans will actually watch. The skirts being a perfect example- why a boring ombré when we could’ve had a beautiful, unique artwork piece?
As an Australian. I agree. That skirt without the blazer has managed to make athletes in peak form look fat -a hard feat. Sports craft could of done better. An aboriginal print would of been so nice.
Philippine's opening ceremony outfit is the traditional Barong shirt with embroidered armband representing the flag, it is all over tiktok as well, not as fancy as Mongolia but also traditional and different.
It would be so wonderful if each nation put out an explanation of the historical and cultural references in their uniforms. They put in the design effort so it'd be helpful to understand it.
Im sure all countries do have an explanation, but in their language in their own broadcasts or on their own social media. I agree though, it'd be great if there was a designated time slot for the commentary to explain the meaning to everyone watching the opening ceremony!
The Czech uniform is such a look. As is Turkey. Also Austria, Haiti, India, Poland, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Switzerland are solid. And Mongolia is just stunning. Also, Mongolian people are so beautiful.
I would love if some tv channel or something would do an Olympics Fashion special for every Olympics. Interview the designers, talk about the inspirations and cultural aspects, get great shots of all the outfits for each country. They put so much work into the clothing it would be nice to showcase it!
How I Rank It 🥇 : Mongolia , Haiti , Srilanka 🥈 : Mexico , Kazakhstan , Ireland , Turkey 🥉 : Japan , Thailand , South Korea , Great Britain , USA 4 th Place : Malaysia , Italy , France
Mongolia! Wow! Sri Lanka is lovely too with the embroidery. I like India and Poland as well. But Haiti is just stunning. The art, the fit, the BOOTS! Fabulous.
As a brazilian i can say that EVERYONE hated the outfit from the opening ceremony, we even had a petition to give to some other brand to do another option that really represents our country and not go with the stereotypical jaguar and leaves as always. I guess that's what you get for putting this responsibility on the hands of a fast fashion brand...
Yeah. And we Americans have been complaining about our team uniforms (with women's shorts looking like thongs). The Ralph Lauren opening ceremony outfits also have been decried. But I think Ralph Lauren has been phoning it in for years as he has a multi-year contract.
@@crispixl.1882 The leotards are were designed by Jade Barbosa, the capitain of gymnastics team. She is an amazing athlete and super talented. So glad it was not the same brand!!
Brazil outfits ain't bad but i think Brazil have so much potential i generally like Brazil themed outfits uniforms. It could have been much better here.
Ireland’s opening ceremony jacket includes an embroidered county crest for the athletes to showcase their home county. Laura redesigned traditional county crests with a new symbolism and a refreshed colour palette. This is what the different patches in the sleeves are. Just FYI 💚
Dear Luke, thank you for this analysis! I have a few notes on the Mexican uniform. I was not happy with its overall design but I am happy to see my home country represented in the Olympics. Mexico was the first Latin American city that hosted the summer games. The graphic design for its campaign is quite iconic and timeless, as it followed the Op-Art trend of the late 1960s. It would have been cool had the designer incorporated those elements of optical art into this year’s uniform. I love the addition of the pink though, as pink is considered the local color of CDMX. The city is covered in pink motifs: taxis, buses, the flora, and buildings are often painted in pink. The heart design element I think borrows from the city of Guanajuato. The city is an important site for Mexico’s pre and post colonial history as it is the birth (“la cuna”) of the Mexican independence movement. Guanajuato is often referred to as “el corazón de México”, meaning, “the heart of Mexico”. Guanajuato is also the birthplace of Diego Rivera. Most importantly, the Angel is seen in the back of the uniform. I loved your comparison of the Angel with greek mythology. I have never thought of it that way, but so clever to incorporate this in the Olympic uniform! The Angel though is the iconic “Ángel de la Independencia”, an iconic monument in beautiful Mexico City. The Angel is located in the middle of Avenida Reforma, one of the city’s most important avenues. I just wanted to share this with you! Thank you for always posting top-notch content!❤
The pink I think represents Mexico as a whole. It’s rosa mexicano and has a whole history, beginning in fashion, indeed. I would guess that’s why CDMX chose it as its brand color.
As discusssed with Brit friends: I had one question: does it come with a tattoo? Because we all agreed that it should. Look, UK, you had Alexamder McQueen. We know you can do better.
@@mcozy3466 I just laughed when I saw their outfits.. I wish they'd made an effort and gone more old school traditional. They have the history of four countries to draw inspiration from. I wish they'd done multiple looks. As a Scot I'd at least liked to have seen a Kilt.
Another Brazilian here 🙋🏻♀️ Truly, it’s only the ceremonial outfit that is the problem, all the other uniforms for each sport were pretty nice and cool. Worst part is knowing that whoever designed the opening outfit, and whoever approved of them, really don’t care nor understand the importance of a good personal image in such an event! People from the Brazilian Olympic Committee have literally said “it’s not a fashion show” 🙄 Like that justifies wearing whatever to a ceremony that will be viewed globally. The cherry on top was the chief of marketing for Riachuelo saying they were inspired by Dior’s New Look. Bitch, where?!?!?! Ugh, total lack of care for our athletes that already have a hard time getting support and sponsors (outside of football, ofc)…
@sagatyba personally if anyone had said a thing about the flip flops I would've fiercely defended since, it's THE thing we all wear and having an outfit that makes the flip flops look good is an interesting take for potential fashion moments
Most South Africans aren't loving the looks our athletes walked out in. Green and gold is a big colour combo in South Africa. The Gazelle you mentioned, is a Springbok, which is the name most people associate with our rugby team. South Africa is culturally rich and I think that there is way way more that could have been done to represent the different cultures in their outfits. Mongolia were the best, followed by Haiti and Sri Lanka.
8:33 is Team *Taiwan*. Chinese Taipei has been a completely made up "region name" which doesn't even exist in the world. Something being forced under immense Chinese political oppress. Taiwanese athletes therefore are not allowed to raise our national flag nor to have country name printed on uniform. It's something we has been endeavouring to seek for more international recognition and to justify. Nonetheless, been your follower since ages, enjoy this informative critique content as always and happy to see Taiwanese uniform being mentioned!
It confused me a lot! I said it's Taiwan not Chinese Taipei. I know there is an intense tension with China (it's always been). Hope it can resolve without war. I hope you all are safe after the typhoon.

Polish people aren’t really interested in cricket so the sweater was probably purely an aesthetic choice. But! The florals are composed of wheat and polish meadow flowers ❤
As Thai. I wanna add about team Thailand. This design got so much backlash from Thai people because it's so outdated in so many Thai people's eyes and it's really similar to old fashioned clothes often wearing by old yet not so beloved politicians/governors. The backlash was so bad and to my eyes justifiable that they have changed the design completely. Wr don't hate the materials, and using silk is good idea but as you mentioned the cut is pretty strange and over all design is just outdated
I don't really know anything, but to me it also felt really old-fashioned. It felt like they didn't go for "blending traditions and modern fashion" but just for "tradition"...full stop.

Orange is the National color of The Netherlands. It's because the last name of our royal family is van Oranje (of Orange). People don't actually wear it that much outside of sports events and kingsday.
Agree. Mongolia's outfit for 2024 is a new level of Olympic dressing departing from the current global commercialized approach with an effect of visual splash to a more culturally assertive approach with enhanced stress on uniqueness and recognizability. Respect to Haiti too!!
The flowers on the second British look are our national flowers, English Rose, Scottish Thistle, Welsh daffodil and North Irish shamrock. I agree more generally though I really wish we incorporated more British tailoring elements or something because right now they’re so boring.
I think that print would have read more British with a white background rather than dark blue (would feel like a traditional floral print rather than a Hawaiian shirt) But still not good, the opening look just reads as a bland nothing…and kind of fast fashion in style.
I'm Brazilian and I wanted to cry when o first saw the uniform. You can say it, sweetie. It's hideous. And for those who may wonder, that's the best picture of it 🤡
There's a private boys school here in Sydney, AU who wants its uniform blazers back; could NOT believe the US would allow their uniform maker to steal such a basic concept, red white and blue blazer! And why use Lauren for such a design challenge?
Haiti, WOW - The Guayabera (4-pocket shirt) is also found in other Caribbean places like Cuba. I really like how the vibrant colors of Haiti are expressed in the skirt and plants. These colors are pervasive throughout the country, from street art to tap-tap (a form of taxi). Philippe Dodard and Sella Jean nailied it.
So baffled why the UK is having a Hawaiian shirt moment, but I can explain the flower print - it’s each country’s national flower: Rose - England Daffodil - Wales Thistle - Scotland Clover/Shamrock - Northern Ireland
What you have shown about the Philippines’ outfit, is just for their daily use during the event. They wore an official outfit during the opening ceremony which can be easily searched online.
I'm getting Project Runway challenge flashbacks with some of these looks. Haiti (Stella Jean), Mongolia (Michel & Amazonka), Poland, China and Sri Lanka had the best opening ceremony looks (shared in this video). Great balance of cultural heritage, style and designer signature.
Sri Lanka’s uniforms:- The white garments use silk, handmade embroidery, and beadwork to represent the looks of the royal courts of the 19th century. 😊❤️🔥
the chinese mens uniforms weren't tailored/too large which made them look bad. given their background with garment production and textiles you'd think they could hem some trousers or provide the right sized jackets
Colombia's opening ceremony look was a trench coat in the "traditional" trench coat color with that same motif at the bottom. The motif is inspired by "cañaflecha", a textile from here, and with the colors of our flag of course. The uniforms/looks were made by Totto, a colombian backpacks/suitcase company (and athletic gear like fanny packs, hats, wallets, etc) that has also some sportswear things (mostly jackets and windbreakers and tshirts). It's pretty much the only company that sponsors our athletes here and the backpacks are QUALITY! My father has been using the same backpack as a traveling one for 20 years, it's in perfect shape.
37:16 I don't think that Spain can get too creative with looks inspired in traditional clothing because every region has their own and it might create some controversy since regionalism is a real thing there. Flamenco clothing is from Andalucia, which is different from the Basque Region, Madrid, or Valencia, for example.
Yeah, people would definitely get mad if the design leaned towards one particular region. I'd be cool if they found common elements from all autonomous communities for the design, but I guess it'd be too complicated.
Mongolia was my favourite from the start. My daughter bought the Canadian LuLuLemon shorts you pictured. In the floral pattern there is also a moose, a wolf, and an orca. They are very nice and the quality is good. The white and red uniform is being called "bacon" by its detractors.
I just love your fashion critique. Not only do you make me smile and laugh, I enjoy your choice of words to describe various fashion trends. You have such passion for what you do and above all ,your knowledge of fashion history is impressive. I always look forward to your content. Greetings from South Africa.
You did it again: a beautiful interesting video about the Olympic uniforms. I tried to find contributions by others but yours is the more extensive one. Well done 👏👏👏.
I've never been this early 😃 Edit after watching the video: I loved that you did this and definitely Mongolia is the best. I also loved Sri Lanka, Haiti, China and Poland. Super disappointed by team France
@keops02 Exactly! Except I'll save my "super disappointment" for the USA. **Yawn** Why oh why does every Olympic Ralph Lauren dollection look **exactly** the same as all the others?! And with over-sized logo to boot! Yuck! Stop with the lazy and show some effort & orginality.
Team Sri Lanka has chosen the Kandyan Era fashion. This was the way the Royal family used to wear before Europeans came to Sri Lanka (Ceylone). Its a now famouse brand in Sri Lanka named "Lovi Ceylon" the Brand Ambassador is non other than Sri Lankan singer Yohani. She wears Lovi Ceylon fashion on all her Concerts.
You know what, totally get the whole Mexico thing (I’m Mexican American) and I know some people weren’t happy about it and it’s not to everyone’s taste. I personally LOVED IT because of the symbolism. So the pink used is referred as “Rosa Mexicana” or Mexican Pink (this shade of pink is very close to us) The little hearts and detailed illustrations on the sleeves are suppose to represent “milagritos” or little miracles. They are silver charms that we carry that are similar, in way, to good luck charms. As for the Angel in the back, that is to represent the big golden statue in Mexico City: El Angel de la Victoria, or The Angel of Victory translated in English. Men’sFashion wanted to make a sleek but street fashion statement for the Mexican team, away from the topical tricolor. I think it’s a pretty unique style for the team, again, away from the typical green white and red. Totally respect your opinion! I just wanted to share the symbolism! 👍🏽
As an Irish person I do not generally go out of my way to defend the UK buuuut, those are the plant/flowers that represent each of the nations that make it up. Rose - England, Daffodil - Wales, Thistle - Scotland, and Shamrock - Northern Ireland. The set dressing is heinous though because they clearly didn't commission anyone to make the florals specifically so the scale on the different flowers is I went to the craft store and this is what they had...
The Mexico fit had Niké, Greek Goddess of Victory in the back, there is a monument with a sculpture of her in Mexico City and represents victory and liberty.
About the Mexican uniforms .. the imagery on the sleeves are called milagros. The accent color is officially known as Rosa Mexicano and I believe the image on back of the jacket represents the Angel of Independence .. one of the most famous monuments in Mexico City.
It's embarassing that they chose to stay away from the rich history of textiles, embroidery and artisanal craft that Mexico has to offer. Instead, they chose an angel(which is more representative of European art and religion). They were not gala worthy and definitely not representative of the country.
I am an Indian, and I absolutely HATE the Indian look. They could have done SOO much better. Could have included some designs like the peacock or embroidery, something that represents the diversity of this country instead of just adding national flag's colours to the border. The worst part is that even if the designers wanted to use the current design, they could have used intricate hand sewing for the borders like it is done by traditional artisans but instead they chose to print it.
When I saw Team Mongolia's uniform trending on social media I thought of you! I was like 'HauteLeMode is definitely going to do a video on this uniform'
Please do a series where you react to fashion designers from different countries! I felt so happy to see you react to Poland I would love to see you review polish designers and I’m sure people from other countries would enjoy it to. Would be a great series & I love your channel.
I'm Brazilian and I came here just to see you talking about our uniform. In Brazil the opening uniform it's been massively criticized. It's ugly, looks cheap, there's no one good thing about it. We say it looks like a going to the church clothes, cause the born again Christians and evangelicals here use when they go to church, which is ok, but not for the opening ceremony at the Olympics! The yellow and blue are kinda incapable, they are our flag colours, and we think it's beautiful, perhaps cause we grow up with it, i must confess i love the colour of our flag and the way they go together, but it's not for everyone!
For people who liked Mongolian olympic uniform, i would recommend the last olympics uniform too. Because it was made by the same designer, and was very good too.
Your coverage of the Olympics clothing style would inspire me as a young person to learn to sew and not be afraid to create my own style of skirts blazers and shorts, even designing my own carry bag, thank you.
