The funny thing is that no matter which of the 2 POOR THINGS guys gets the Oscar nod, that person will tie the Supporting Actor nomination Oscar record.
Takeaways: -Huge for The Color Purple to get into Ensemble. -I think DiCaprio gets in at the Oscars. -Poor Things takes a hit after winning Globe. -Barbie might win here. -Oppenheimer the clear favorite for Best Picture.
Nice summary. While Poor Things will continue to be fighting uphill to beat the above and below the line juggernaut Oppenheimer, there should be absolutely no surprise that a fantasy/sci fi-premised film misses ensemble. In addition to The Shape of Water and LOTR as BP’s missing the cut, the list is long.
I’m conflicted because I’m not crazy about the nominations, however I do like how it really shook the race up. Makes the Oscar’s more difficult to predict.
Ruffalo not being nominated is truly shocking and outrageous. Maybe his best work ever. Also surprised to see DiCaprio left out, not that he needs the recognition but I do think Flower Moon is some of his best and most uncharacteristically subtle work ever. As for Melton he was always going to be a long shot imo. But he’s just getting started and has his whole career ahead of him. One day he’ll get his recognition
Yeah, fr, he has great range. He can be the friendly, loving family man in This is Us. A hard, serious, no nonsense father in Waves, a desperate and hilariously deluded priest in Honk For Jesus and the character he plays in American Fiction, who imo, was the best part of that movie. I need to see my man in some staring roles
The reality is that members of SAG vote in the Oscars (the acting branch is the biggest in the academy) and the people who vote in the GG and the CC not
The most shocking thing for me from these nominations was the omission of Leo - it was smart of you boys to predict he would be in the fungible slot. He just seemed like part of the awards train this year, but he has definitely been campaigning more for Lily than for himself. The five here are all good options, though. A sad development, but a right one.
I do wonder why Melton seems to have everyone's attention more than Sessa. Dominic was in way more of his movie and was just as good as Melton. Melton had a few good scenes, but that was it.
Ten years ago in 2014, Leo nominated for Golden Globes, but not nominated for SAG, and then he got nomination at the Oscars, and i think history repeat itself in 2024...!!!Don't worry Leo still got in this year for sure...!!!
There were 99 stunt crew members on Barbie. It's a good thing if the stunts are invisible, it means that they were integrated seamlessly into the film. Good nom
@@Lanosrep so mitchell please enlighten us as to what stunts that were in barbie were sooo good? Liked the movie, but getting a stunt nomination over a good amount of films seems outrageous.
The nominations are made by a committee of actual SAG stunt performers and coordinators, not the general membership. You need to get out to LA ASAP to explain their jobs to them.
I so knew SAG would do Nyad. Benning and Foster are never getting the Oscar, but I knew SAG would love Nyad. I got 5/5 for Lead Actress. Also, I'm tucking in Color Purple. If SAG REALLY loved it, Fantasia would have been nominated. As is, it's just going to be Babylon, House of Gucci, and Bombshell all over again.
What are you talking about? Annette and Jodie made great performances in Nyad, they deserve it, if they get the Oscar nomination, it’s gonna well deserved
I do wonder which actors will surprise at the Academy Awards. I feel safe predicting Cruz now since she has proven an Academy darling getting in with Parallel Mothers recently
She got in with Parallel Mothers without any precursor nominations. Now she has SAG for Ferrari so it would not be a surprise at the Oscars anymore. Maybe Aunjanue Ellis in Origin becomes the surprise this season.
@ejm6460 Actually think Cruz will probably get in (showy performance + got the SAG). So that leaves the fifth slot. Moore is 50/50 but I can see the Academy wanting to nominate her again. If Foster misses the BAFTA, then I think she’s J. Lo in Hustlers
Here are my initial thoughts on the nominations. Charles Melton missing in Best Supporting Actor was not a surprise to me because I had feeling that it was a good chance of that happening. Sterling K Brown being in the Best Supporting Actor category at SAG was a delightful surprise. As far as Leo not being nominated for Best Actor, I have mixed feelings about this. The reason why I had mixed feelings about this was due to the fact that I did not rule out the possibility of them deciding to go with either Colman Domingo or Barry Keoghan over Leo. Was it a bad call, yes. Was I surprised about this decision, not really. The biggest shocker besides Sterling K Brown getting in for Best Supporting Actor was Poor Things not being nominated for SAG Ensemble.
This is a classic case of the alphabet advantage we see at the Emmys where names higher up in the alphabet benefit from the voting system of just checking off 5 names with no ranking. American Fiction, The Color Purple, Bening, Brown, Dafoe and Cruz get in while people like Ruffalo and Melton miss.
You can read about what stands out in the actor nominees written in NYTimes magazine. Example: Best Theft of a Movie: Ryan Gosling, “Barbie” For an audience to leave a movie theater convinced that one actor has pocketed the film implies that something went wrong, that a movie that wasn’t about that character became about the actor playing that character. Famously: Anthony Hopkins and his almost 25 minutes of screen time in “The Silence of the Lambs.” And now: Gosling - controversially, for stealing candy from a Barbie. He goes so hard at the joke that Ken is supposed to be telling on men: Strength is weakness, coolness is lame, knowledge is ignorance, twinkle is shadow. You watch Gosling’s face for some sign of a wink, but he is committed. He could have played Ken as an idiot. But the comedy of the performance, the danger of the part and perhaps the point of the movie is that the actor playing this narcissist has installed in him a soul. Read the full story here, which includes nearly two dozen awards, as well as video clips that can elucidate the picks, even if you haven’t seen the movies.
I feel like it seems pretty clear that Leo is missing noms because he has made it abundantly clear he has zero interest in the awards this season. The extent of his campaigning this year has been exclusively supporting Lily. Same with Marty.
I switched out Mulligan for Barrino yesterday. I can't believe Ruffalo didn't get in, that's crazy. I still think both he and Dafoe are in for the Oscars, Banshees and Billboards-style.
Can anyone explain the difference between SAG voting and Oscar voting? Do only actors vote for actor with Oscar? If that's the case and all actors are SAG members wouldn't the SAG winners completely mirror the Oscars?
I was very certain that it would look very much like Ruffalo was secure for a nomination (I expected him to get in at both Bafta and SAG), only to be leap-frogged by Dafoe at the last minute for the Oscar nom a la Catriona Balfe in Belfast and Paul Dano in The Fabelmans. Now that it's already happened at SAG, I'm not really sure what to do as the idea is now put into people's heads so it wouldn't be as similar of a thing. Perhaps both Dafoe and Ruffalo both miss?
Cruz could really be like Bates for Richard Jewell, only one got SAG one Globes, but both are veteran actresses playing baity real life figure with tone of Oscar clips, in a no one cares film directed by a beloved director for old voters.
I think the only valid stunt that came to mind for Barbie is Simu Liu's cartwheel backflip during the dance party scene but I think it was Simu himself who did it and not a stunt double? idk
I do know that Simu Liu has a credited stunt double. Other stunts I can think of are the Mattel chase sequences (both in the building and in the car chase), the fight between Allan and the other Kens, and of course the beach-off.
I dont really have an opinion on barbie in stunts because i know nothing about stunts but it doesnt surprise me that it got in because i remember greta gerwig talking about how the stunt people coordinated the im just ken fight scene so if others heard that story i could see them keeping it in mind for a nomination
I was surprised by Barbie for stunt ensemble but I understand that there is a panel of stunt people who make the SAG stunt nominations and they probably know a lot more about the Barbie production than I do. It is like Oscar shortlists. The actual professional vfx people probably liked Oppenheimer as a movie. They left it off the list because it has less challenging fx (practical and digital) than many perfume ads. Meanwhile, Spiderverse made the shortlist. I do not understand exactly what vfx means in the context of an animated movie but they do know. I can disagree with their choices and often do, even strongly, but I cannot sensibly act like the problem is that these idiots simply dont know anything about vfx. They are vfx professionals. And if a panel of stunt people picked Barbie they had reasons beyond liking the movie. They are not looking to disresoect or anger their fellow 7,700 SAG stunt people.
Since SAG AFTRA merge not a single foreign performance was nominated in leading categories till this date. No matter how much buzz and Critic wins they had.
