Fun fact, the 8 speed auto is sourced from Hyundai DYMOS. It is the same transmission family as the Kia Stinger/Genesis models

Interesting. I thought the engine might be as well; the Hyundai produces 147kW/440Nm, this is 148/441. But apparently it’s all SsangYong.

@drivingenthusiastaustralia the engine was based on a Mercedes 2.2 diesel engine.

@@wax333 The 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel engine - which makes 148kW and 441Nm - is SsangYong's own, they don't source from Mercedes anymore they don't have the license .

@@drivingenthusiastaustralia yes it’s a 100% Ssangyong engine

It's a solid transmission, in my opinion buying the Isuzu MUX 1.9L is an absolute joke. The MUX alone has a terrible traction control system especially in off road situations where it makes no attempt to prevent spinning wheels by clamping X brake to force power across to the axle with traction, the Rexton in my opinion has a very well appointed interior, sorted 8sp auto vs the MUX and Prado's Aisin 6sp box. I'd buy a Rexton with the upgraded suspension for better handling, off road ability, get the metal skid plates & they're suprisingly capable

That thing really didn’t like 2nd gear did it…something wierd going on with the first 3 anyway. Sister and hubby have one…I hated it when they got it 2 years ago but must admit it’s standing up to the crap they subject it to

Yeah at first I thought it was just the digital screen delayed. But it does seem to slur into second. Maybe this test car needs a service/lived a hard life?

@@drivingenthusiastaustralia Funny you mention about the animated tacho - I seem to recall one of the first animated tachos was in the LFA and they did that because the engine revs changed so fast an analogue gauge couldn't keep up with it but in this they seem to have built the lag back into a digital one haha The thing about second is odd, I wonder what the ratio is - maybe it's not slipping but the ratio is too close to the next one. Or maybe it's got something wrong with it...

I am absolutely happy with my Rexton as I did not pay Toyota Tax and the Ultimate is luxury compared to the MUX Everest or LandCruiser Prado

I had a ssanyong with the five cylinder diesel purchase back in 2010, l did 230,000km trouble free averaged 9L/100km through that time. Well built reliable products. And Korean government won’t let this manufacturer die for some reason.

@ThomasFG

Mostly a variable due to climate, roads might have been slightly damp, but them Nexen rubbers are utterly s**t Put a good set of tyres on & it'll substantially improve braking distances. Compared to sum utes or other 4x4 SUV's in the segment however, the brake & tyre package is better than some rivals. Vented rotors front & rear, where many are solid rear or drum brakes still in 2024 You'll find CarExpert did an extensive towing test & unladen LR Defender 110, MUX, Land Cruiser 300 Series, Fortuner, New Ford Everest, Patrol, etc were all in excess of 42 meters braking distances, The Rexton actually has a great brake package let down by s**t tyres. Some utes were nudging 48 meters plus which is alarming in itself !

Personally, I’d buy the new Santa Fe AWD hybrid for very similar money. Or the MU-X if off roading was a higher priority.

@@drivingenthusiastaustraliathe kit in this trim will be in the $80,000’s in the Kia isn’t it. Ans they’re both Korean, so apples for apples.

@@kennethprocak5176 Sort of. The base model Santa Fe now comes with dual screens and dual wireless phone chargers etc. I think overall the Santa Fe represents better value for money. And it’s a newer product so it should hold value slightly better. Hybrid tech is also more advanced. Priced from $58k but excluding on-roads, so maybe $62k or something.

I am picking my brand new Rexton next week and can't wait to start driving it. I am having the upgraded Ironman suspension kit installed to improve the ground clearance and handling as well as a fair few other accessories (tow pack, side steps etc) but it will still come in at under $60k drive away, so is unmatched as a value proposition for something with 3.5T towing. They might not be the sexiest or latest model out there but when you are spending your own money, they certainly stack up as a very compelling option.

@@mariuslefter Loving my Rexton life so far, it is a great cruiser and good on fuel for such a big car. Sidesteps are accessories that fit below the doors and make it easier to get in and out of the vehicle

Have seen some tests with this model, the fuel economy is awful. Some petrol SUVs with almost the same size are more efficient than this...

@@Tracka4612 Here in Europe at 120km/h it burns 8L/100km. That's a lot for a small 4 cylinder very weak Diesel engine on a very slow car. That's almost the fuel consumption of an X5 xDrive40i. Haven't said that a guy who took the car for a test drive in Poland said that suddenly the car broke.

@@Tracka4612 You are happy because you compare it with your previous car, but if you compare it with its competitors the things aren't that good. Driving for a quite long period of time at exactly 120km/h on a flat road it burns around 8L/100km. As I've said, in exactly the same situation a BMW X5 G05 xDrive40i (3.0L turbocharged petrol 6 cylinder) burns 8.4L/100km.

@@Eugen-EDiesel engine fuel consumption at cruising speed depends more on the size of the car than the size of the engine. I'm not surprised that the 3.0 diesel BMW (which is probably at less than 2000rpm doing 120kmh) only just burns more diesel than this brick of a car.
