There are endless options when it comes to mid-size utility vehicles, so here are three industry outliers. The Honda Ridgeline is a crossover that's been truckified, the Toyota 4Runner is the golden standard of SUVs from yesteryear and the Subaru Outback is one of the last wagons standing in North America. I'll try to break down their strengths and weaknesses in this one to see which one is the best for you and how they stack up from competition from Jeep, Mazda, Chevrolet and well... virtually every brand.
Thank you, Royal South Toyota, for letting me test drive the 4Runner for today's video.

I follow you because you're one of the only ones that brings up reliability. You don't sugarcoat and you don't kowtow to the manufacturers just to get cars to review. You keep it real and simple, and that what makes you stand out among the rest of the other "reviewers". Keep up the good work!

Great video. This is how real people cross shop vehicles. They dont just stick to midsize trucks, midsize CUVs, midsize suvs. They look at different kinds of vehicles that might work for them. Like these three vehicles.

We own and Outback and the Ridgeline. Love both for what they do. The Ridgeline tows our boat and the Outback does town well. No need for a big, off road vehicle, so our days of over-priced and 4x4 for daily driver is done. Gods reviews. Thanks.

Exactly my thinking, in today's market the emphasis is on 4X4 off-roading vehicles. And I almost felt for that, I was going to pull the trigger on a 2023 TRD PRO 4Runner at 70K (w/markup) I had to be honest with myself, I'm going to live most of my life commuting so no need for an off-roader. I'm thinking that the Ridgeline truck is the smartest choice for my needs. It's all the truck I need and if I really want to hit the off-road I can buy a SXS and tow it with my RL truck.

I owned a TRDORP 4Runner and it was unstoppable BUT the fuel economy was/is it's Achilles Heel. Greatest truck on the planet if you drive less than 4K a year. I now own an Outback Onyx XT. I get about 31 MPG on the highway which is where I usually am. I never needed the 4Runner. Very happy with the Outback.

I'd drive any one of these, but I don't regret one bit buying the Outback Wilderness (particularly the '24 model, which added the H/K sound system). Most of the usability of an SUV while still driving and riding more like a car. Great video as usual. Thank you for sharing.

All great vehicles that fit difference niches, For me, the Outback has fantastic utility, very comfortable, can go pretty much anywhere in any weather, get 30 miles / gallon and drives like a car, not a truck. On my 3rd one (2010, 2015, 2022), generally quite trouble free except for battery failure in two in less than 3 yrs and one had very minor oil leak that was repaired under warranty.

Ridge line is really cool. I love the trunk in the bed and the interior is really functional. The 4Runner is the most old school but since it lacks a manual transmission I don’t see the point. A Subaru without a manual transmission has no interest for me.

I feel that sentiment, I definitely think it’s a great package (even with the auto), but if they offer it with the 6 spd in the next gen like they do with the tacoma, I will personally buy one!

Wells done! Glad the algorithm served you up! I've owned all 3 in the last few years and agree with your assessment. All very good choices. I'd say I loved living with the Ridgeline most but parted with it bc of issues with the infotainment system (not connecting to my phone). The problem was eventually resolved with an update. 4Runner SR5 felt like driving in a cloud - it was soft and comfortable. There was a very noticable nose-dive when braking. What annoyed me was the lack of power (as you say, it's up there in the rpm's). It always loses momentum on hills, needing you to really mash the pedal to keep speed, struggles to pass cars on the highway... gets pushed all over the road on windy days. However, the 4Runner was solid, it has plenty of practical space, excellent visibility from the high seating position and it was comfortable like that old sweatshirt my wife keeps trying to throw out. The Outback (XT model) is an all-around practical choice. Fun to drive with it's zippy engine. The suspension and large sidewalls soaked up the bumps in the road, while the cabin felt quiet and comfy. My only gripe was I wanted a higher seating position. Cars have gotten so big that I felt like I was always staring at someone's bumper when driving. I would've really liked to see tha Honda Passport in this comparison.

The Ridgeline is not a truck guys truck. Imagine having the bed loaded and get a flat. You’d have to unload the entire bed to get to the spare! The 4Runner is fantastic for room but limited headroom, abysmal fuel economy and its age and cost (over MSRP at Toyota) limit its appeal. The Subaru hits so many great points, it’s just the perception of the CVT that holds it back. Love the ride and the power of the Outback XT! ❤❤❤

4Runners have finally come back down to MSRP in my area. Just wish I had $40k to spare. They may be outdated and drink fuel, but they'll outlast just about every other vehicle currently for sale.

LOL. I've been driving trucks for 25 years. My current is a 2017 Silverado. I've never even had a flat tire that a plug couldn't repair in the side of the road without even taking the wheel off (I hope I didn't just jinx myself). And I don't even think thats happened more than 2x in my 25 years with a truck. Anyone who thinks the deciding factor for the Ridgeline will be based on the spare tire.. isn't a truck guy to begin with. The Ridgeline fits most truck consumer's needs. If you're looking for a work truck.. you're probably not looking at the Ridgeline anyway.

Honestly the wilderness is probably the best choice. Yea you can’t beat Honda reliability but the fact of how low it is , is really disappointing. Almost no off road features . The 4 runner is not so good with gas and honestly a more hard core off roader that would probably never be used as intended. The Outback wilderness has a great all wheel drive system paired with the lifted suspension plus a very comfortable daily.

Another fun and informative video. You do a great job of providing objective model information with subjective insights/opinions that are missing from many reviews. I’m currently shopping for a replacement for my 2015 Outback and your videos have been very helpful. I love my current Outback, it’s comfortable, spacious, practical, handles well and gets good gas mileage for a 2015. The 2024 has the same virtues, with somewhat newer tech, though I’m not sure it’s quite as nimble as my 2015. However, I hoped for better gas mileage and more power than the non-turbo (hybrid option), and a more modern infotainment system. The 2024 Outback’s infotainment system isn’t bad, but it wasn’t exactly cutting edge when introduced 4 years ago. It’s nice to start with more modern tech when you keep a car for 10 years. I’ve cross shopped all the obvious compact SUV hybrids, but all have drawbacks. The Lexus N350 hybrid drives nicely, gets great gas mileage, and has a beautiful interior, but its backseat isn’t as comfortable and spacious as the Outback, and it lacks cargo room. Plus it’s probably too fancy a car for someone likely to transport 8 foot 2x4’s in the cabin! The RAV4 and CRV hybrids are nice vehicles but nothing is very compelling about them and their interiors are not as nice as the Outback’s. The Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage are probably the closest matches to the Outback in terms of driving dynamics, spaciousness, and comfort. In fact, they do a pretty amazing job of combining hybrid efficiency, modern tech, good driving dynamics, with a practical, spacious, and upscale cabin. The downside is of course reliability. A long warranty is not a substitute for years of trouble free operation. All that said, I keep coming back to the Outback! Too bad hybrid Subarus are at least a year away!

Curious if you have a favorite 4Runner trim? I really like that the limited has Auto 4WD. Wish it also came with the KDSS option that you can get on the TRD Off Rd Premium. For an everyday driver, not much if any true off roading, is the limited the best option and not worry about the XREAS?
@Realistick
@Realistick 5 месяцев назад
I think the Limited is the best, the x-reas does make a big difference (and it’s worth the potential for leaks) but a base trd OR is probably the one that makes the most sense and you can always upgrade the suspension too.
