I think the 4runner is competing with the explorer mid-size suv. the fj cruiser needs to come back to directly compete with these off-road suv

This is spot on. Keep the 4Runner the 4Runner and make the necessary upgrades to bring it more up to spec for the times. The FJ would be a better way to compete with the Bronco. That said -- would love a manual option in the 4Runner.

Meh, just make a short wheel base 2dr 4runner, no need for crazy styling. Its guaranteed there will be a 4cyl turbo so in that way the same. Hopefully the 4runner will get Toyota safety sense 2.5 which is almost a sure thing, putting it ahead of the Bronco on tech. As far as capability I imagine they will be neck and neck, Toyota probably wont make anything as crazy as the Bronco Raptor though. Oh and there is talk of some kind of electrification on some version, probably like the Rav4 Plug in Hybrid. So my guess is Toyota will be way ahead in TECH and Bronco will have the performance crown with the Bronco Raptor. Personally I would go with the higher tech.

You cut the video at the perfect moment to comment on the flaw of the Bronco back window when you closed the gate, then reached to close the window. It’s an annoying design to have to close the window before swinging the gate closed. 4Runner should maintain that power window!

I hate to think that Toyota is worrying too much about what's on a Bronco. A 4Runner is one of the best vehicles on the road, very capable offroad, and sells great. A Bronco is nice when new, but no wayyyyy will it hold up like a 4Runner. I don't understand Toyota's insecurity here.

A roll down rear window and panoramic sunroof that opens part way is wayyyy more functional than removable panels that need to be stored somewhere and can't be done while the vehicle is moving or changed quickly in bad weather. 4Runner started out as a true off road truck in 1984. It would be great to have a convertible hardtop again along with maintaining its off road heritage. Even if they have removable panels like the upscale Wrangler that would be awesome. One thing for sure, they need to keep the classic manual transfer case lever.

I agree with that last comment. I have a 4th gen, and love it to death, but I absolutely hate that electric switch on the dash that you twist to engage the xfer case. It may be that my switch has loosened over the years, but I'm constantly bonking it and throwing the truck into 4wd by mistake. But it should most definitely have a manual lever. All that being said, the thing is 1.5 decades old and is just getting broken in! I also heard a rumor that they may do away with the openable rear window on the 6th-gen and without that feature it's really not proper to call it a 4Runner!!!

I was eagerly waiting to buy one of the next gen 4Runners until the Bronco came out, and now I’m waiting to see what the new 4Runners offer before making a final decision. For me, it’s all about the off-road features and the interior. We know the new 4Runners will look great on the exterior, but they have to update the interior significantly. Also, the wide array of off-road features the Bronco offers is just unmatched. I know the Off-Road and TRDPro trims on the 4Runner offer rear locking differentials, but the Bronco has front AND rear lockers, and everything I’ve watched and read says they’re much easier to use and aren’t as difficult to engage. The Bronco also has the trail turn assist and front detachable sway arms. And while they might not be used often, it would be nice to have them. The 360 degree cameras as well as the front facing camera that shows tire tracks are amazing as well. The 4Runner is obviously no slouch off-road, but I feel like Toyota has some catching up to do in terms of design and function. If they do that, I’ll be getting a 4Runner. If not, I’ll be getting a Bronco.

Not a fair comparison to put a limited 4Runner next to a Bronco. The limited has so much extra crap hanging off it. It’s not an off-road vehicle. Better to use a base level TRD off road. What I’d like Toyota to do is admit that people want bigger tires and move the front body mounts back so we don’t have to chop them just to fit 33s. It would be nice to get 35s factory like Bronco and Jeep. I use my roof for storage. I don’t need removable roof panels. I need strength. Good point about the rear window. I never use it because of the exhaust that gets sucked into the cabin. It would be nice to have a factory option to move the spare to the back. Toyota makes great products but they have a history of not listening to/caring about owners that use them in extreme conditions.

@pgjc756
@pgjc756 Год назад
Personally, I think that they should keep the 4Runner roughly the same for the lower packages... i.e. SR5, Limited, TRD Sport. I think for the TRD Pro they should offer more offroad aspects such as 35's, bumpers, removable panels, etc. The TRD Pro should stand out as an Off road vehicle from the other lines, instead of a different color or badging of the valence, door handle colors, shift knob, etc. Currently anyone can buy an SR5 and make it a Pro with a few tweaks, minus the crawl control.

Leave the look relatively similar, but stretch the wheelbase in improve departure/approach angle slightly and give the wheel wells room to accommodate larger tires without having to butcher the front end up. Offer a front locker and sway bar disconnect (like the Broncos) and keep the rear window setup. Couple these changes with a better powertrain and better tech and it will totally compete with the Bronco and Wrangler!

Screw the 4Runner .. it hasn’t been off-road capable in few decades .. just bring back a BETTER FJ .. removable top and doors .. 2 and 4 door .. 4 or 5 different kick-ass versions .. but Toyota is TOO SCARED to even drive down this dirt path .. 😢
@CBass75

They gotta make bigger tire wells to fit larger tires. A panoramic sunroof would be nice. The tire issue is the biggest issue though. Having to cut the fenders sucks. Ohh... and lockers

It will NEVER happen .. Toyota is NOT going the make the 4Runner off-road capable .. it’ll rely on the owners to do the work itself if they want it this way .. don’t even look to TRD for help .. good luck though

Toyota needs to place something in this segment. They have such a rich history of off road capability. I think a more solid off road platform would dominate in a few years.

Previously the Tundra didn’t have a locker at all, now it’s an option. It would be very cool if Toyota offered a front locker on their midsized trucks. TRD Pro needs to offer more than headlights, a cheap lift and a badge.

Been holding off buying the 2023 model because I'm curious about the 6th generation. Also, Toyota dealerships are making it hard anyway as no trd off road models are on any lots near me, and worse they're now pitting customer against customer to see who would pay the most for the few that are still out there. It's disgusting, really. So now looking closely at that Bronco and the Jeep also. Great Video David, keep em' coming.

Would love: Roll down rear window...it's a staple for the 4runner and the exhaust could easily be relocated to the side Make the trims much more specific...SR5 a basic model/Limited = luxurious/Trail more off road focused/ Premium more luxurious/TRD PRO Extreme offroad focused to compete with top tier bronco/wrangler. Give it 3 engine options: 2.4l turbo/3.5l v6/ revitalize the 4.7l from the 4th gen, give it 400ish hp and give all engines a 10 speed with optional 7 speed manual. Ford's Bronco is highly customizable, so is the wrangler. Toyota has to offer lots of trims and options to stay competitive.

Toyota has enough vehicles for the ‘suburbanite’ buyers, so it’s time to go rough and tumble off-road with the 4Runner. And no toy-like design … please!!

Maybe Toyota will integrate the look of the FJ into the next Gen 4Runner? They do not have necessarily go full off-road mode but could offer a TRD version to compete with Wranger/Bronco and a updated version that has the look of an off-road vehicle but with features that will satisfy their current 4Runner owners. Take the best ideas from the Wrangler/Bronco - update them-make any necessary improvements, and come up with a competitive 4x4 truck.

Who told you that the hood brackets were for wires to deflect brush. The most realistic use would be tie downs for rack carrying canoes, kayaks, ladders etc. The reason main that the 6th gen has been "delayed" is that Toyota is presently selling every 4Runner that they can build. Why would they bring out a replacement?
