On the face of it, this comparison test might seem a tad lopsided. After all, pitching a $134k Land Rover Defender 110 against a $70k Toyota 4Runner TRD (pricing before freight and taxes) hardly seems fair. On top of that, the Defender is armed with a 493-hp supercharged 5.0L V8 while the 4Runner soldiers on with an ancient 270-hp 4.0L V6 that is well past its sell-by date. Come to think of it, so is this generation 4Runner, now in its final year.
So what gives? Well, this face-off is all about the off-road experience, and both the Land Rover Defender and Toyota 4Runner TRD are legitimate and legendary when tire meets the muck.

Yeah but those five years will be way more fun, comfortable, and capable and then trade it in. Not everyone wants an old, out of date car.

One is great to lease, the other is great to own. Maybe the V8 Defender has a better build quality than the P400 versions? I have 2 neighbours that have the 110 P400s, with one got rid of his because he had electrical issues (spent more time at the dealer than in his driveway), and the other loves hers although it has left them stranded and had to be flatbed towed as it can’t be one sided towed for any great distance.

@@zalllon Yeah I know a guy with a 4Runner that had the transmission go out after two years and my buddy has a Tundra that needs a new motor. Anecdotes are fun.

@@winglam6438 lol. Yeah, rich people get rich by driving old cars. Keep telling yourself whatever you have to do feel good. Everywhere I look I see poor people driving nice cars like land Rovers and rich people driving 20 year old Toyotas... 😂

300,000 miles later on my 2014 4runner. Until this day, it is still doing circles around that sorry defender. keep trying to defend that useless pride on that POS defender 😂

I think a more interesting comparison is between the Defender P400 110 and the new Landcruiser for an on and real off-road experience (I wouldn’t consider this video providing a real off-road experience). I was really hoping the 2023 Defender had the bugs worked out of it, as I was looking at getting either the 110 or 130 with the P400 power train, but based on neighbour’s experiences and some other things I’ve learned about them it’s a no. It’s too bad, as I think the Defender is a really good looking vehicle, especially after some mild modifications. I’ll stick with my 2022 4Runner TRD Off Road with a bit more confidence of not being left stranded on the trail. I do wish it a had a heated steering wheel and cooled seats and better sound system, but I did get it for $52,500 Cdn before freight and taxes.
