When we buy rational cars, we accept reality. The Jetta Sport understands this, but when equipped with the manual transmission, it allows us to forget the mundane for just a moment. Is it better than a Honda Civic, Kia Forte GT, Mazda3, Toyota Corolla, etc? Let's find out.

Last year my sister needed a new car and her budget was $20-23K. She looked at used Civic's, Mazda3's and new Jetta Sports. Ended up in this exact car (Sport 6MT), as it was the best value. 3 yr old Civic's and Mazdas with 30K + miles were going for about $21k. She seems to like it and it has been a good car for her.

After owning Toyotas I've come to expect flawless reliability for the first five years at an absolute minimum. Even in return for a better car at a better price, I can't go back.

Hope they go back to automatics. I really like Toyota, but the Corolla hatch I drove had a Cont variable transmission and it was 'mooooing' at me like a cow every time I hit the gas. That off the line delay was a deal breaker.
@nodak81

Both Toyota and Honda aren't nearly the powerhouses of reliability that they were back in the 90's and early 2000's. These days you can go with several brands and have nearly equal odds of a trouble-free ownership experience. You just have to be smart about what you buy and do your research. My mother's Taurus has 240k miles and the check engine light has never even come on once. I love my Prius for the same reason but God help me when something does go wrong. I'll need a PhD in electrical engineering to diagnose the problem.

These are great cars for a first time buyers or for using up miles on. I had the 2019 model and it wasn’t bad. One thing about these VWs is the depreciation and they don’t keep their value at all. So if you’re going to get one you may as well drive it til it breaks. For the price of the car it does come with some pretty good features.

a big take away for anyone shopping this is the ACC can be had with the manual & some other auto journalist were able to achieve 50mpg on a mpg loop... thats a pretty stellar figure. I am concerned about reliabilty/safety as others have mentioned. I wonder if VW will keep with the jetta or drop it giving the brands tragectory towards EV. im currently trying to get out of my MK8 GTI and may end up with one of these. thanks for the review man. been a long time viewer.

This is a lot of car for the $$$. I'd gamble on VW reliability w/ the 4yr50K full warranty. Even the base 'S' model around 22K has most of these features and no silly bottom end hub caps. The Kia/Hyundai, Civic, and Corolla 2.0 N/A base engines felt SO slow compared w/ this base 1.5T. It felt underrated in power and gets incredible mileage if you stay off the boost. I haven't bought yet, but w/ target price of 22-24K, this is at top of my list if I go new.

@@mikedaleiden7725 Well, that's a new one for me. I've never been accused of being afraid of anything before. No, warranties like those mean little to me. I keep my cars just about forever and that's why I only choose reliable makes and models. Forcing a company to honor their warranties (as you might have to) can be very hard for owners since those carmakers are well practiced at denying claims. When they do honor them, what should be a 2 hr. repair becomes a 3 month hassle. But good luck to you and enjoy the depreciation on those vehicles, too.

You'll pay more for those but I'd tend to agree, it's worth it in a few years (usually from resale alone). I do appreciate what VW is able to do with the Jetta at this price point with the 6 speed. I think some of their cars, like the GTI and GLI tend to be built better or at least pack a robust powertrain so that's nice to see.

Genuinely, the interior on the new Jetta is the one that the new Golf R should have gotten. The GLI uses the exact same engine and transmission and its significantly cheaper. There really is no need to buy a new Golf R with the Jetta GLI around. At its price point the Audi S3, functionally the same as the Golf R except the body style, is infinitely better in every single way.

Was considering a Jetta but man, they really did quite bad on the newest IIHS crash tests. The new tests are pretty stringent, but still not too many vehicles did worse on things like rear passenger safety (pretty important if one has kids). The Audis did fine, which I think is telling about VW/audi. I’m sure this is all due in part to the Jetta being very old, structurally. But it doesn’t inspire confidence. Thank you for mentioning it. Few reviewers do.

Local VW dealer just told me 2024 will be the last year of Jetta manuals. Test drove one, the new car feels inferior to the 6spd MK4 I had; imprecise throws, awkward gear ratios, terrible rev hang. At least the clutch is easy to modulate. Definitely won't miss it - I'd rather drive auto than a half-assed manual.
@Realistick
@Realistick 5 месяцев назад
It will be the last year! I think the mazda and honda shifters are better, and the gearing is tall, but I do disagree on the rev hang and imprecise throws. She's no miata for sure and most older cars were more fun, but she's smooth and easy to operate. I think the tall ratios make it feel like the rev hang is awful (that 1-2 shift is a doozy), but that's probably how they got the gas mileage rating to be so high. You should test out the civic hatch before giving up on new manuals!
@kevinnorris6558
@kevinnorris6558 5 месяцев назад
Have you considered the new Si/Integra? I have a 2024 Integra with the 6 speed manual and even in the era of rev hang, Honda manages to make a good transmission. I like to think of Porsche making the best manual transmissions with Honda being a close second, which is impressive given how much cheaper Hondas are.

@@Realistick Being a downer wasn't my intention, but the car I drove wasn't uplifting at all. Civic hatches do have Jettas beat but they're 10k more expensive than a manual Jetta in Canada. In hindsight maybe the Jetta isn't that bad given the price, just kinda sad that VW's last manuals are dying with a whimper.
@Thirsty_Fox
@Thirsty_Fox Месяц назад
@@tonyl7286 Since there's almost nothing left in manual here in Canada, it's between the Jetta, Sentra, and Civic really (a handful of sports cars too). The Civic in manual is nearly C$40k. Nicer car, sure, but that's a ton of money, especially with the crazy high interest rates now. Sentra is C$25k for barebones base or C$30k for the mid-spec. I don't think it's as good as the Jetta even. Toyota dropped manuals for the Corolla, which was quite sad.

VW entices with standard features and a lower base price, not to mention, borderline mid-sized proportions, but do your research when comparison shopping in its class. VW gets your attention with the price, but unless you secure your own car loan with a "good" interest rate, VW Credit will sock you with higher than average rates, and then the stealership adds their own points to the interest rate because their legally allowed to. VW currently is does not have any special lease deals or interest rates deals on the Jetta. It's a cash cow for them, but the Jetta has poor resale value, so unless you get a substantially better monthly payment, it may be prudent to look elsewhere.
