Thanks Ron, I’ve got two years to prepare and practice. Good thing is they are willing to give good pointers and advice in their critiques that will improve my work. I’m going to give it my best shot!

Thanks man, I won’t do many videos like this one. This competition is only held every two years. It was a great experience this time as well as two years ago. I may have a similar one coming in January that I’m thinking about doing but I’m going to keep it a surprise.

@@MURPHISH I’m sure I’ll be doing more fishing videos in the future. After all it is what drives my inspiration to carve fish.

It appears to me that the small saltwater fish garner the most attention. Congrats on your entries. Also, it was nice to meet you in person..

The two tiny ones Bo Wessman did certainly did well. He had actually carved them for another competition he said they had a “Champaign bottle” category. The whole carving including the base had to be small enough to fit inside a champagne bottle. Who is this? I can’t tell by your username 😜

Congratulations Danny! Now I’m glad I didn’t enter on the novice cause I would have been the only one and that’s no competition lol. Thanks for all you do and I can’t tell enough how much your experience has helped me really plan out what I want to accomplish. You’re the man! And I hope to see you at the next one!

Thank you I appreciate that I’m glad they’re helping. Im not 100% sure but I think in the case of only one entry they would have moved you to intermediate. We are working on a plan that I will outline in the next few video projects that will help raise awareness for the fish carving side of the competition. The fish carving organizers, judges and a few of us competitors have formed a new Facebook group called “Fish Carving Inspiration” that we hope will raise awareness for the Fish Carving division of the World Taxidermy and Fish Carving Championship. So if you do Facebook come join us. We’re still in the growing and formatting stage but it will definitely formatted strictly for fish wood carving. So hopefully current fish wood carvers or those that have started or thinking about carving fish will join and hopefully we can encourage them to come and enter the 2026 World. Hope to see you there. (In the group AND the next World competition)

Congratulations again Danny! You certainly did great. I think i am going to have to take you up on the invite/challenge to bring some of my work down to the show next year. Going to really have to step my game up from decoys over the next twelve months.

Great! They are only every two years so the next one won’t be until 2026 so you’ve got plenty of time. Be sure and keep in touch. If you do FB follow me on my wood carving page. It’s called Wild Impressions Wood Carving by Danny Harris. I post a lot of photos of progress of what ever project I’m working on between these videos here on the channel. And you can send me pics of your progress if you like. I’d like to see what you decide what to work on. I told myself I want to work on a duck or two and maybe a songbird here and there this fall.

@@Danny_Harris-Arts that will definitely give me some time to work. At one of the decoy shows I'm doing up here as a wall carving category. It's always mounted on a piece of drift wood, but this year it's 2 brook trout. The only down side is it's a purchase award, so the prize for first is $800 but they keep the piece. But I'm going to go for it and see how I do.

@@travishanson2884in the world competition for fish the judges really look at the artistry and flow of the base and how well it blends as an artistic extension of the fish as well as the Anatomical correctness of the fish, its attitude, fin motion and body language. are the eyes looking at something? They’ll even make sure scales are accurate in size and number. Especially if it’s in the open division and being considered for a world title. Sometimes a tiny detail like growth rings on the scales can make a difference. Fish an average number of scales, example a regular large mouth bass may have 55-65 scales along the lateral line from head to tail. 6-8 rows above the lateral line and 12-17 rows below Nd they’ll look at and notice detail like that. They aren’t quite as critical in the novice and their expectations for detail increase in each of the 4 levels, youth, novice, intermediate and open. I’m sure decorative and decoy details are just as important in carving them for competition as they are for fish.

Hi Danny Was there any other entires then what your video showed? Just cuious if there was a 100 entries or 1000. Congrats, on winning.

Yes, but I’m not exactly sure how many all together. I was always in the showroom at the wrong time. There were only 7-8 already set up when I got there, they made us leave as soon as we set up and we couldn’t go back in until after the judging so im not sure how many came after me. By the time I went in to see how I placed some guys had already picked up theirs up to head home. so I don’t know exactly how many entries there were in my division. I know there were no entries for the novice this year. But im guessing the intermediate had a dozen or so maybe? And I’m not sure how many were in the open. Probably a few more than intermediate. Several of the guys stayed for the round table discussion at the end and one of the things we discussed was starting a FB group for all the contestants past and present called “Fish Carving Inspiration” and hopefully get the attention of a lot of new members that are fish carvers and hopefully encourage them to consider entering in 2026 to help build the competition back to where it was pre Covid days when there were dozens of entries in each division. 2022 was the first one I entered and it was also the first one after Covid. There were a lot more entries in 2022 than there was this time for sure I do know that. I was in the novice then and there were probably two dozen in the novice alone and probably close to 100 with all 4 levels, youth, novice, intermediate and the Open. The Taxidermy side had a record turn out this year, So hopefully with this new FB group we can get the participation up for the Fish carving division in 2026. I’ll be talking more about this with future project videos and I’ll start with my next project if my wood ever arrives!! 😖
