i just wanted to upload a bit of an update.
i have been pulling things apart again in the last few weeks, fundamentally frustrated by an inability to sequence what i am doing effectively outside of a grid ... or in any way really, beyond arranging audio slices made by playing all my sounds live, directly into csound ... (i have largely abandoned generative score strategies at this point ...)
there is a bit of compromise happening as a result however that isn't entirely unwelcome: between pointillism and stasis, between consonance and dissonance.
i have had some harmonic "problems" i am still looking to solve that exist in the more purely pointillistic attempts, and it seems that accommodating all 12 tones into "upper structure chords" is going to take me a lot of the way there. (this is overall quite harmonic however ...)
if i can use this style, that is more "grounded in stasis", to accommodate that, then perhaps i can look to expand it eventually into something with greater bass movement.
Then again, the "ground of stasis" does open up the possibility of the multi-hour sets again ... and helps me escape some of the blander aspects of a lot of my initial forays into the "sleep music" thing ...
as it is, i think there is room here now to expand the sound palette and work with some additional elements that lean back into some of the "fields" strategies, using elements of acoustic performance and field recordings etc ... this would offer a way to unite most of the influences, if not all ...
i still have some arrangement stuff to work out, but overall this is a sketch i made today that i am happy enough with, even as it is unmixed & very rough arranged.
sometimes i like to put up half-finished things like this as there is always the chance that i will get hit by a bus tomorrow, and at least i can have something to represent where my head was at before "the lights went out" once & for all ...
