You might be most familiar with the British sports car maker Lotus thanks to its history of two-seat sports cars like the super-light Elise and Evora, or maybe from its long history of specialty cars, one of which (famously was driven by a British super spy) turned into a submarine, back in the 1970s. But whatever you know about Lotus, it’s time to un-know it - Lotus is now part of the pantheon of brands owned by Chinese automaker Geely, along with some brands you’ve heard of (Polestar, Volvo) and a bunch you likely haven’t (Lynk & Co., Zeekr, Proton). And so the days of Lotus vehicles being all about super light construction and wild handling are done; Lotus is being recast as a global purveyor of high-performance electric vehicles, and the new 2025 Emeya sedan you see here will play a big role in that rethink.
It certainly has the specs on paper to fit the bill: 0-60 mph in 2.8 seconds. Power output of 905 horsepower from a dual-motor, all-wheel drive set-up. A 102-kWh lithium-ion battery pack that can handle a 350 kW DC Fast Charge. All in a swoopy package with a knockout interior that’s roughly the same size as a Porsche Taycan. Probably cost about the same, too.
Cars.com Detroit Bureau Chief Aaron Bragman had an up close look at the new ‘25 Emeya at the company’s garage in suburban Detroit recently, and while he didn’t get to take one out on the street (yet), he did get to crawl all over Lotus’ new electric “hyper-GT” hatchback.
