I fell in love with Lauryn Hill's voice as a young girl. She has a hauntingly, beautiful sound. There are some artists that you don't just listen to their music, you feel it in your soul. They are rare. But, she is definitely one of them. ♥️ BTW, India, you do the BEST reaction videos. The way you break down the music, and the words! I look forward to your vids! Two lyrics not correctly rendered: "I felt all flushed with fever/Embarrassed by the crowd" "I prayed that he would finish/But he just kept right on" Not your fault India. Whoever made the video misunderstood those two lyrics. Just my contribution 😄

Ohhhhh yesssss. More Fugees and more Lauryn Hill please! Some of the lyrics here were wrong. Where it says "In there was a vital crowd" at 3:52 ACTUALLY says "Embarrassed by the crowd" Then 4:07 you read "Afraid that he would finish". She actually sings "I prayed that he would finish".

That’s such an interesting interpretation! I never thought of it that way. Back when I was in school we talked about this song in class and came up with a very different interpretation. Namely that it is about a girl who is fan of a musician and sent him letters, telling him what his songs mean to her. When one day she finally got to see him and listen to him at a concert tho she was shocked to find that he had turned her fan-mail into song lyrics, literally using her pain and telling her whole life to the crowd. And she was so embarrassed and it was killing her inside to hear him singing her letters but at the same time she loves his music.

In November 1971, Lieberman, now 20, went out with her friend Michele Willens to see Don McLean perform at the Troubadour nightclub in Los Angeles.[1] McLean's hit song "American Pie" was rising in the charts, but Lieberman was strongly affected by McLean singing another song: "Empty Chairs".[3][4] This song spurred her to write poetic notes on a paper napkin while he was performing the song.[5] Willens confirms that Lieberman was "scribbling notes" on a napkin as soon as McLean began singing the song. After the concert, Lieberman phoned Gimbel to read him her napkin notes and share her experience of a singer reaching deep inside her world with his song.[1] Lieberman's description reminded Gimbel of a song title that was already in his idea notebook, a title that contained "killing" and "softly".[6] Gimbel expanded on Lieberman's notes, fleshing them out into song lyrics. Gimbel said in 1973 that "Her conversation fed me, inspired me, gave me some language and a choice of words."[1] Gimbel passed these lyrics to Fox, who set them to music.[2] Lieberman recorded the song in late 1971 and released it as a single in 1972, produced by Gimbel and Fox. This version did not chart. Lieberman promoted the album by touring, and she always introduced the song "Killing Me Softly" by describing its origin in the McLean performance.

Roberta's version came out when I was a toddler and I remember sitting in the back seat of our car sobbing for the beauty of the vocals (including the harmonies). My only complaint was that I've never been a huge fan of most piano playing. I love this version too. The elimination of the piano and the addition of the drums and Bass was killer!! My one complaint though... I could do without all the talking. For me, it kills the vibe of the song. It's like watching an intense movie and having someone talk about the stock market right next to you.

Imagine you are in a crowd and some stranger stands up, this person starts saying things, things only you should know. Before this stranger all your facades are ripped away leaving only the real you. This stranger then starts revealing every good and every bad part of your life in front of the crowd. Nothing is more terrifying to a human being then to have their facade tore away and have the people around them known what they should not know. Just think about something about your self, some thing that no one but you should ever know, now this person is revealing that thing to everyone around you.

As a child, I thought this was about a relationship between a man and his girlfriend/spouse, where he was ‘killing her softly’, where KHS was about outshining/burying/dominating her individuality. His “song” was his narrative, which subjugated her story under his. Very 70’s feminism vs. traditional gender roles. That is the power of good poetry: it joins with your reference to produce new meaning.

I still own this physical cd... She gave so much respect to the Original Reberta Flack... EXCELLENT Cover... Whole Fugie Cd... was Great, Updated and more Relevant Today than ever... Research Laurens Truth Protest...and how the 'Music Industry' punished her for it 😉

I think this was originally about fandom and the power of music. But that added element of unilateral love is something we can all relate too. Which is better? Ugh, Flack vs. Hill, tough choice. Flack was so authentic, Hill was so powerful.
