SMORES tea as in the MOORS in Wuthering Heights hahah thats the relation! thats actually genius! dude the deep dipe into book history and the pencil hype just really underline to me how much this podcast is my fave vibes hahahah the plot for Out sounds so much like a book i read earlier this year and loved - The Bandit Queens!
There are a bunch of mentorship programs for translators by organisations like NCW, ALTA etc. I am a mentee of the booker winning translator Daisy Rockwell. My first book comes out in Feb 2024 and that would be a part of my bio as well. All emerging translators should apply to the mentorship programs. It's a wonderful step towards publication
Blasphemy on a book podcast 😆, but I highly recommend the movie "Fried Green Tomatoes" as well. Super memorable and I assume it holds up (I saw it YEARS ago when it first came out).
Annotations is the only reason I have woodcase pencils anymore 😅 I use mechanical ones and pens for note-taking but I do not like the SHARPNESS of them on a book page!
'Letters of Note' is a really amazing collection of letters. They don't have the narrative element, but it is a great 'coffee table book' to dip in and out of. Lots of free to access ones on their website/socials too!
If you want a good cry, then the film version of Fried Green Tomatoes will release the dam. Didn’t realise it was based on a book! I must look into this…! Will make a perfect gift for my friend :)
When you talked about Letters to my neighbour I thought "but.... didn't you already read that ?" and then I realised no, Leena red it and talked about it in one of her video X)
Russell Books IS the biggest secondhand bookshop in Canada BUT it is not in Montreal! It's in Victoria, BC! It was founded in Montreal but I guess they moved a long time ago? I was confused when Ariel said its in Montreal because i live here and i've never heard of it before! 😅
Something that I read about the ending of Out by Natsuo Kirino is that the last fifth is weirdly male gaze-y. That's also what's stopping me from reading that one.
Hello, Ariel and Raeleen! Congrats on visiting more NS bookshops, Ariel! I wanted to let you know that there is a Strange Adventures Comic Bookshop location in Fredericton, NB, as well. I live in Fredericton and often stop by if I'm downtown. They have a decent graphic novel section, lots of comic books, board games, and some manga too. I really enjoyed the episode, ladies! 😊
Hey Ariel, regarding you new found love forn"letter books" maybe you would like: "You Make Me Possible: The Love Letters of Karina M. Szczurek & André Brink". I really loved it when i read it a few years ago. Its so nice to feel through the letters how these two people fall in love :)
I've heard of Vita Sackville West in regard to gardening as she was well known for her garden designs. I love going down rabbity holes! If you are looking for book binding inspiration Nik the Booksmith on RU-vid is great.
I am so enjoying your podcast! So many interesting topics and informative eppy's. I signed up for the Bookmark Subscription - Looking forward to receiving them!
Loved learning about the history of books! Unfortunately, I’m a little bummed about your bookshop story. COVID is still happening and is still very life threatening for immunocompromised people. It’s community care to wear masks and at the very least have a couple in your car. I understand things happen, but please consider those most vulnerable in our communities. 💜
She didn't discredit the owner in any way and stayed respectful. Also, she didn't walk in without the mask, so I don't understand why you're bummed. On a different note, I think if a shop still requires masks (which is totally fine and understandable), it should be selling them. It's good for business and in their best interest - instead of making the customer go away, they sell the mask and keep a client
No one is calling Ariel disrespectful. I think she handled the situation well, It’s just community care for individuals to always have a mask available if needed. That’s my point. I wish it wasn’t considered weird to wear a mask when around others.
