I feel like both of you feeling less inclined to buy books has something to do with staying off of social media a lot more. I did an experiment in January where I tried to actively avoid consuming bookish content to see how it would affect my reading and while I suddenly felt super inspired by my physical tbr and just read more in general I also didn't feel the urge to buy books at all really. It was honestly kind of scary to see how influenced I am by content creators even though I would consider myself a pretty conscious consumer
Hello, I was the person who left the comment about not using the term "post-pandemic" or "after the pandemic". Thank you so much for acknowledging it! I usually say "after lockdowns" or "during lockdowns" if I am referring to that early phase when we were all at home. You can also say something along the lines of "after the first phase of the pandemic" or "during the first phase of the pandemic" (acknowledging the pandemic is still ongoing, but we are in a different phase!). As book lovers, I think we can all agree that words matter, which is why I left my original comment! Anyway, I love the podcast and this was a great episode! Lots of love all the way from Lisbon, Portugal!
@@gomordecai3129 she can say whatever she wants, it's their podcast. I'm just pointing out the impact certain words can have. She can read my comment and decide for herself what the best thing to say is. Also, I was very polite to Ariel and Raeleen, I love their podcast and have been very careful to not sound mean or hostile in my comments.
i totally get your point but i was so sure it wasn’t a pandemic anymore! like i thought the pandemic phase in a strict sense ended in may 2023? am i tripping?
@@fayevalentines the WHO declared they would officially not call COVID a public health emergency, essentially because we failed to contain the virus, so now emergency measures (like lockdowns) don't make sense anymore and we should focus on long term measures (like ventilation and air filtration of indoor spaces). However, most media outlets misinterpreted what the WHO said and created headlines saying the pandemic is over. The pandemic is not over, in fact we are just now leaving the second highest surge of the pandemic ever. The pandemic leader of the WHO just gave an interview recently reiterating that we are still in a pandemic and that governments need to do more. If you Google " rampant COVID poses new challenges in the fifth year of the pandemic", you can find that interview. It was done by Scientific American.
I've been really enjoying the music on the pod. Great job, CJ! The book synopsis music gives me Stardew Valley vibes - it's so calming and cozy and stimulating.
i’m a big fan of the strand and hearing ariel talk about it made me realize that i actually kind of like the crowds! when i go, i often find myself in new sections that i wouldn’t otherwise go to in order to avoid the really crowded popular sections and i discover new books. also, it’s really fun people watching to see what books people are looking at.
Love the episode! As an aside Tóibín is pronounced toe-been. Take it from me, Róisín (roe-sheen). But what I really wanted to say is that I have been inspired by Ariel and did a book binding workshop. It was 3.5 hours and we learned the Coptic stitch and I immediately afterwards bought all the supplies and materials and have been making notebooks ever since. Thanks for inspiring me to try this fab hobby--I now (2 weeks later) consider book binding a key interest of mine lol
oh man it feels like fanfic has been having SUCH a resurgence lately, i'm seeing so many people go back and read these HP fanfics especially. there's even been some drama because people (not the fic writers, just randoms) are binding these fanfics and selling them which is just a very very bad idea so a lot of authors seem to be pulling down their fanfics in fear they get in trouble. just a very crappy situation!
I haven’t bought new books in a long time. I have gone to used book stores, thrift stores and I also "rescue" books at my job. I find them in abandoned houses and buildings sometimes and if they are in readable (non-moldy) condition, I will bring them home with me. Once I read them, I pass them along to the little free libraries that are all over in my area.
As someone who's read and loved A Tree Grows in Brooklyn both as a child and an adult, I completely agree that it doesn't have a strong plot. The vibe of hanging out in Brooklyn as this girl grows up absolutely works for me, but if it wasn't working for you I don't think that would change in the last 75% of the book. :)
Ariel’s story is actually so so common. Look into these rights, if no one volunteers they have to bump someone and then you’re often entitled to 300% compensation of your ticket.
Ariel hearing you talk about expensive coffee was so cathartic haha it's getting out of hand here in Toronto too - tell me why my matcha latte last week was over $8... I gotta stop
Ariel! I keep meaning to recommend a collection of letters and then forgetting: Words in Air: The Complete Correspondence between Elizabeth Bishop and Robert Lowell. It's a chunky collection, so a great intro to their correspondence/friendship is the play Dear Elizabeth by Sarah Ruhl, which is adapted from the letters.
I loved the costumes and use of color and light in the movie Brooklyn. There’s one scene where her visa has just been stamped and she steps through the door on Ellis Island surrounded by light, as though walking into a bright future, and it just made me think of that pivotal moment in an immigrant family’s history when that one ancestor made that one bold choice.
raeleen, melina marchetta (author of jellicoe road) also has a brilliant fantasy trilogy called The Lumatere Chronicles!! it has a stunning prose, gorgeous found-family, and a sort of chosen one trope (not quite but nearly there) - i know you're not reading much fantasy atm but i think you might enjoy this!
Do you think that you not feeling the need to buy books is linked to your social media break? Not seeing new releases or not being as influenced to buy things?
I almost only read fanfics and have been doing this for years. Because i lot things happening in my life, its just so much "easier" to read a universe i know. Or universes, because i read for a lot of different fandoms. I have never really been interested in reading Hermione/Draco stories with them in front, i read a lot of different ships. Mostly Harry/Draco or actually a lot of crossovers 🤷🏻♀️🥰 But there there is a lot of really great fanfics out there, that are better than a lot of books. 🥰
Oh my god im obsessed with the new bookmarks!! I said this last time but I think these are my fav! And im thinking about making a bookmark of my own reading corner 😊😊
I also read manacled after having listened to your end of year podcast! I absolutely fell into its world and have read it twice. It has also opened a door for me into the fanfic world which I know is hilariously late. I wondered if and how you plan to record this reading Raeleen? Does it fit on your spreadsheet or is it too different a form of reading for you?
Ariel, you've got to show those pants on instagram! You can't just tease us like this!! AND Raeleen, if one of those secret books is not Butts: A Backstory, I'll be highly disappointed!! Jokes aside, I can't wait for the reveal next week! 🍑🍑🍑
“On Writing” by Stephen King is an excellent book but when Raeleen finds out that it’s the ONLY Stephen King book that I’ve ever read, I could be banned from watching future podcasts.😆
I love A saying nonfiction books that could be 100 pages but they’re 300. I love NF, but my god leave out frivolous factoids. I have neither a photographic memory, tons of time, nor patience with the too much info NF!
