About 25 years ago I picked up a new (back then) Marlin bolt action tube fed .22 mag. Slapped a 3-9 scope on it, zeroed it in and shot 5 shots through one ragged hole at 100 yards. Moved out to 200 yds and shot a 5 shot group under 1". I still have it, and it still shoots the same after hundreds of rounds. Rifles come and go, but that little Marlin ain't going anywhere!!!

@jonsheets966
@jonsheets966 Год назад
@@deborahchesser7375 I wouldn't want to be the test subject!!! Maybe those guys who say a .22 is too small/weak to use for self defense would step up and put their bodies where their mouths are. My guess; It would enter, then rip up soft tissue. Nothing compared to a 9mm, .38 spl or even a .380, and certainty not a one-shot stopper. However it would let the attacker know you're not going down without a fight. If recoil sensitive, I believe a .22 mag might be just the ticket (and far superior to a .22lr!).

I like the 22 magnum, about 40 years ago. My grandfather in law has about 2,000 acres. Outside of Bandera Texas he had a jackrabbit problem, there were eating up his crops. So at dusk. my wife drove the pickup truck and I was shooting off at the top of the cab with mounted spotlights. I shot 32 jackrabbits. It took all night, but he paid me $5 a rabbit. I thought that was pretty cool, and I was having a damn good time!

Many moons ago, when I was knee high to a grasshopper, we used 22 LR for everything. Rabbits, quail, varmints, coyotes. Shots ranged from point blank, to 50 yds, to 150 yds. Shot placement was key to success. And we were successful. As time went by, all the magazine gurus kept saying we didn't have "enough gun". Well, successfully using the tools you have is more important than what someone else thinks. Anyway, graduation to the 22 mag showed us that it was better for our purposes, so the 22 mag became the main tool. It gave an additional 50 yds reliably. Something occasionally important. Enough stories. A couple of shots appeared to be affected by the wind. This will open up groups (of course). A couple of shots seemed to have a mind of their own, so yes, definitely, try another brand. All rifles will have a favorite brand/bullet weight. Some rifles shoot all well, but even those rifles will show a preference. So try different brands to search for that preference. A modern synthetic stocked Savage should be capable of minute of angle or better (one inch at 100 yds). Keep trying. You'll get there. The only Savage that I ever had trouble with was the double barrel 410/22 mag. Come to find out, back in the old days, those guns were bored through from a single steel blank. Can anyone say "metal stresses"?

Back in the early 70's my buddy and I made a nice chunk of change hunting hides and the 22 Mag was our go to caliber. We took yotes, cat's, fox and anything else that would bring a buck. My go to rifle was a Marlin 783 with a K-6 Weaver, made numerous head shots at 100 yards, hit them any where else and a 125 dollar Bob Cat would get docked 40-50 bucks. I've got a 17 HMR and a 17 WSM both will have to go a long way to catch up with the old Marlin.

Not a single failure of any kind and I could not begin to recall the number of small and medium game that I have taken using them, or the number of big game. If you are looking for quality American made rifle scopes that will not let you down with a life-time of hard use, I would give Leupold my money and not look back! Way I was shown to sight in my rifle if I had a good rest like you've got, is to take 2 shots, adjust my rest until the crosshairs are on where I just hit, then crank the turrets until the crosshairs are back on the bullseye. Hey I always watch your videos. I've heard sometimes with scopes (especially the cheaper ones) when you adjust the zero it can stay "stuck" or not move. If you lightly tap them it helps move the inner tube that has the reticle. Also, I like to only adjust up/down or left/right, supposedly it's easier on the inner tube. Just my two cents, big fan and always watch your videos. 👍👍👍🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲

.22 mag is my favorite round. Best all year all around hunting round in my opinion. Will take any game deer/hog and smaller. Hits hard, shoots straight, with nearly no recoil. Out of a rifle, it's great. Comparable to a 9mm pistol.

I once read that the .22 magnum is more accurate in rifles than in revolvers. All I only know is that an Astra revolver that I used was highly accurate out to 30 yards.

A tip that I do. To help scope cross-hairs to seat after adjusting dials is to lightly tap the blank side of the dial body of scope with my knuckles. I have seen people chase a scope around a target or say you need to fire a few rounds to get it to seat or blame the scope or even the gun
@airsluggerpete1984

I just started using scopes too but learning to sight it in at 25 and then 50 should fine tune the scope with 5 to 10 shot groups. Wherever the hole is the biggest is usually the hotspot.

My favorite is the Hornady 250 grain mono flex hollow point ammo!! They have a great velocity and 250 grain ain’t too small of a chunk of copper!! Another thing about 22 mag is they have impressive penetration. I had a small panel of 3A armor I shot with my mag a while back, went through on every shot and the 3/4 inch of pine board it was taped to. Same panel already with 5 holes in it stopped every single round of 9mm I threw at it
@untermench3502
@untermench3502 3 года назад
It might be the barrel warming up as you shoot, changing the impact point. I use a digital thermometer to load a round at the same temperature and time my shots to offset temperature related issues. Let the barrel cool down between shots to simulate a cold barrel.

Hey I recommend buying a smith and Wesson 15-22 sport. It is chambered in 22lr and it’s awesome it’s like $350 and it comes with a 25 round mag. I liked your plan to test at 100 yds. Several years ago I tested the CCI 22 mag, the Federal 50gr mag and the Winchester .40 mag. The Winchester yielded a 3 inch group, CCI 4inch and Fed 5 inch ( measurements are not exact but approximate but WMR mag was the easy winner). The Fed being heavier was quite a bit slower. Hope your tests go smoother next time, bummer without the magazine! Jay

Pretty good accuracy despite resting the barrel rather than the fore stock. If it was a larger caliber with more recoil it would be difficult getting good results since the barrel would tend to jump more violently. Perhaps It was also a bit windy with the camera shaking like that?
