it's obvious you sympathize more with the union side, but your display of respect for the fallen of the other side is commendable. One of my favorite things about you.

Thats all we want man. Both sides were Americans an as a southerner i can say it feels like you guys still hate our guts today... One of the reason i have chosen not to serve because im gonna fight for a country that hates me or my history. Southern history is American history black history is American history... We can respect the history an everyone that fought an still know the bad an neither side was right or wrong in my opinion. An i cant imagine having to chose the federal government or my state. An there were people that had to make that choice so i think Americans need to respect that an understand it i got a Confederate flag im happy i dont live with all the bad stuff that the Confederatecy is known for or just the south in general but it makes me proud knowing my people put up a damn good fight before they just let government walk over them. Im not proud of the slavery but im happy their were men willing to fight for what believed not matter if it was right or wrong. Much love from the South North Carolina

There’s just something about seeing these kinds of cemeteries with row upon row of gravestones lined up, almost mirroring the line formations from that era, that gets me sort of sentimental. They may not have died in such a fashion but that doesn’t make their death any less meaningful whatsoever.

Seeing all these names from men that served in the Civil War it's amazing to me history should never be forgotten
@michaelaburns734
@michaelaburns734 3 года назад
Yeah, no matter what side they were, they are U.S. people overall. Abraham Lincoln said it best at Gettysburg and his 2nd inaugural address. "We are all Americans."
@nowthisnamestaken
@nowthisnamestaken 3 года назад
@@michaelaburns734 That's because the war was over/near over and it was a time for healing in the moment. To say they were all Americans would have been an insult to these men buried here. They didn't see themselves as 'Americans', though I should say it is possible that there were Unionists in the southern army. Southern traitors fallen dead are worthy of the same respect by Americans that would be given to American al Qaeda who served with bin Laden. However you want to venerate the enemy dead is fine with me. These men were the enemy. These men here were all traitors to their nation, flag and our beloved constitution. Many of them served in the United States Army and used that training to Kill Americans by the tens of thousands.. What single "American" is responsible for the deaths of more Americans than Robert E Lee? I cant think of one. They were late for their own deaths and Nobody, nobody should forget the sacrifices made by real Americans who claimed to be Americans and stood under the American flag in that time to save our Blessed nation. I don't agree that they were all Americans. If I accept the idea that they were Americans, would you be willing to declare them to be traitors to their nation at the least? Can we find some common ground here?

@@nowthisnamestaken let me first say that my family history is Union through and through and I’m from New Jersey, my great 4x grandfather served out of Harrisburg in the Union and other relatives. I in no way can see how these men are traitors. They defended their homes and families foremost. If you’ve read any of S.C. Gwyne’s books you’ll know that he is one of the best historians out there. He stated in his book “Rebel Yell” that a very large majority fought for their homes not for slavery. (Before you get angry, yes, the civil war was about slavery) he stated that when the civil war was starting Virginia was a unionist state but when Lincoln demanded they supply troops to invade their neighbors they refused. In the book when a confederate soldier was captured the Union soldiers were confused because the man wasn’t a slave owner and when questioned why he would even be fighting he stated “because you guys are down here.” For the individual soldiers the war was about their homes.
@nowthisnamestaken
@nowthisnamestaken 3 года назад
@@cpljoshrayperson3429 I don't get angry and please forgive me if I come off that way. It is hard to impart inflection through text. I assume when you say defending their homes that you don't mean literally as that would have them at their homes, being no threat to anyone. So you must mean figuratively they were defending their homes which to me sounds like defending their way of life, status in society or on the social ladder. There are many ways to look at this and I think all ways should be seen.
@cpljoshrayperson3429
@cpljoshrayperson3429 3 года назад
@@nowthisnamestaken well you’d be an idiot to wait for an invading army to start defending your home at its literal front step. You need to organize into a military force of your own. Also if Trenton was invaded by Pennsylvania today I would want to defend it, am I from Trenton? No. So am I defending my social status above others? No. I’m just defending my state before they get to my house. It’s pretty simple. Common soldiers don’t really fight for big grand ideas on how they can get an upper hand on others.

What kind of hatred did these vandals have to damage a cemetery? It been 160 year since the civil war. The conference soldier fought and die for their ideals that they believe in and the vandals can’t let them rest peaceful rest even through death. No matter what reason they have for vandalizing the cemetery, it disgusting for someone to go out of their way to disrespect the dead for no reason

My Great-Great-Grandfather, William Cherryhomes was a POW there until he was exchanged. He was a "gorilla" in Mosby's Scouts. A type of Secret service during the war before there actually was one. It took 7 Yankee officers to get him exchanged. He got back to Richmond VA and was in the hospital for a time, got out, and reenlisted. I am very proud of my heritage.

Very interesting to see, thank you for sharing! I really love your channel. I'm getting back into my family history and discovered that my great-great-great grandfather died (of pneumonia) as a POW at Camp Douglas (Illinois) in February 1865. He had been captured the previous December in Nashville. He was 44 years old. I've always been equal parts fascinated and horrified by the Civil War, and it makes me sad to think about what our nation suffered and endured.

Thanks for the tour through a place I have driven by quite a few times but not yet walked through. I will need to do that soon. I had heard that the camp was set up there, which at the time was pretty far west of the city of Columbus, because their original location was no longer acceptable. That location was Goodale Park, which was land donated to the city of Columbus by Lincoln Goodale on the condition that it remain a park. When they started to use it as a POW camp he threatened to reclaim the land and the camp was moved west.
