This lecture is was created for use in Thermodynamics for Mechanical Engineers at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
This lecture gives an overview for Brayton Cycles. When we look at our three big questions for cycle analysis, we see that Brayton Cycles are (1) Heat Engines; (2) They have a Series of Open System Process; and (3) They use Air (ideal gas) as a working fluid. We can treat a basic Brayton cycle in a similar manner as a basic Rankine Cycle in that it has four components that perform the same functions (increase pressure of the working fluid, add heat, generate power, and reject heat). But, fixing the states throughout this cycle is more like IC Engines because the working fluid is air and we need to use special isentropic relationships for ideal gases. After giving an overview of this type of cycle, I go through a brief example to find net power per unit mass flowing through the system and thermal efficiency
