This lecture is was created for use in Thermodynamics for Mechanical Engineers at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
This lecture gives an introduction to Vapor Compression Refrigeration (VCR) and Heat Pump (VCHP) Cycles. The method of analysis for VCR and VCHP cycles is essentially the same, the only difference is that the energy benefit for a VCR cycle is to remove heat from the cold reservoir and the benefit for a VCHP cycle is that we are adding heat to the hot reservoir. In this lecture we’ll see that these cycles are very similar to Rankine cycles. In fact, they are almost Rankine cycles run in reverse. In addition to introducing these cycles, I’ll also introduce a graphical method for fixing states that is common for these types of cycles.
