If you put full synthetic oils in everything, you will have less parasitic losses due to better oil flow, and thats about it from the rebuilds. What is working for you really well is the header, and you are getting the biggest gains from the right gears in the Diffs for that size of tire. The 22R likes to spin 3000-3200rpm, the sweet spot for economy. I had a similar truck running 4.88 gears with 33 inch tires and a 4spd. Right on 3200rpm at 65mph and got 20+mpg as well. And that was an old carbed truck. Probably would have done better with EFI.

good looking truck man. i miss the days of driving my yota on the street. driving to the trail wheeling all weekend sleepin on a camp chair, driving home. once it became a trailer queen it went to once a month, then 4 times a year, then once a year. now it sits in my garage and havent wheeled or taken it out in 3 years.

Just bought a 4 speed 2WD 1985 Toyota pickup with the 22R carb engine and 230 thousand miles on it and I love this thing runs like new. So now I am watching all these cool videos on how to keep it in good shape. Great video! And nice truck man. I’ve had my truck for 14 years and have kept the mileage, every tank for most of the time… I love increasing MPG, lol. You are 100% about good maintenance = better MPG...and that “it’s not one thing, it’s everything” 😂 17miles city/20-23 highway (1994, 4wd, manual, 400k miles on body, p235/75/15 tires, camper, all stock.)

EGR will actually increase fuel economy but it will cover everything in soot. At partial throttle you’re creating a partial vacuum which lowers compression, EGR raises the compression at partial throttle by filling that empty space with an inert gas (exhaust) increasing efficiency.

When I was going to car college my daily driver was a 22RE pickup with 37" tires. I was a bit older and more experienced than my classmates as I already had training and income through a vocational school. The engine was highly modified for torque production and the gearing gave me excellent highway mileage. I was also carbureted with a 390cfm 4bbl Holley with a dual plane spread bore intake. It was fun showing the younger group of technicians that a rolling burnout through all gears on dry pavement ...was possible with less than 3 liters NA on big tires.

84’ Toyota w/22r converted to EFI, 17mpg in town and 20mph highway, and that is with 330k+ on the clock. Sad to say a engine swap is in the future, love the 4cyl but there is no replacement for displacement. Even with the worse gas mileage, I’ll be giving my rig a whole new attitude.

Hey man, glad you found us! As far as SAS... Leaf springs are cheap, reliable and they work well. The only downside in my opinion is the ride quality. With a quality (key word) link set up you can get more travel and a much better ride. I will eventually be going to a 3 link set up in the front, that said I am totally happy with my current leaf set up.

Big fan of toys. Never ran 37s but plenty of 33 which I find perfect for camping and hunting. I never paid a fuel penalty on any of my toys with the bigger rubber until my 07 Taco. The difference? First and only auto transmission truck I ever owned. Just can't keep the 4.0 liter from running in 3rd gear in the mountains. Give me a 5 speed stick and I'm in control BTW. On the highway I always just drive via rpm. Got my 22r s to go a long long way. Just found a 5 speed 98 Rav and having a ball with it.

Interestingly, they have 99% similar gearing, I think the fact that with a 4 speed you keep the engine operating at it's preferred RPM in the power band on the highway, as opposed to lugging the engine in 5th.

Using an electric fan and a heavier flywheel will help that, plus you’ll love the extra power and torque. I’ve gone down the rabbit hole of other mods too and I’ve found that the subtle differences add up and I definitely agree with going after reducing resistance just as much as adding power

Great vid. always into the mileage game. You said it has a 4 speed. what RPM are you running at 100K's? i am at 2700 at 65mph in my 81 trekker with the g52 5speed. also right at 19-20mpg. on 31in tires. 4.11 gears. I find that most 20-22r STOCK engines like that 2600-3100rpm for the best fuel economy. My 79 2wd truck that i used for autocross had 4.56 gears. 27in tall tires and ran almost 4200rpm at 70mph. it only got around 7MPG:( But am hoping to run this same truck in the future as an MPG aero truck on propane and aero mods to get me into the 30MPG range. My daughters 80 Celica with the 20/22r hybrid, with LOTs of mods to head, pistons, rods, deck, flywheel. ect. ran 26in. tires had 3.23 and ran at around 2600 at 75 and got almost 30MPG. also note that these were all carb, not injected. All engines love LOW backpressure. at WOT. and for part throttle, scavenging from the primary tubes and more importantly. the collector length. and cam overlap has more to do with gains then the rest of the exhaust. but on wheeling rigs the backpressure can aid in engine braking on downhill descents. Still excited to see if you guys get the new rig. Hope you have a great weekend. Tom B. in ND USA

Fingers still crossed on the new rig! According to the service manual my truck has a 17.2 gallon tank, 65 liters.

It's definitely up for debate, this is just my experience. Engines run best on clean, cold air. So putting already burnt hot exhaust gases back into the intake seems to be exactly what I don't want.
@TWIRKNOLOVE
@TWIRKNOLOVE 2 года назад
There is no motor in the world, besides 2 strokes, that benefit from back pressure. The less restriction, the better and more efficient the engine will perform. There are many physics and thermo published papers on this subject.
@ToyotaWorldRunners
@ToyotaWorldRunners 2 года назад
Perhaps I'm using the wrong term? What I was trying to get at it that in my experience my engines have performed better and had more power with a full and complete exhaust, brand new right to the tip, as opposed to a chopped off exhaust at the cab. While driving, it feels like there's more pressure propelled through the exhaust.
@TWIRKNOLOVE
@TWIRKNOLOVE 2 года назад
@@ToyotaWorldRunners Engines run better when exhausts (95% of the time, it's the header/manifold runner design) are able to properly scavenge their gases out of the cylinders without running into each other, causing blockage. This is accomplished by the runner design on the exhaust manifold. After that, it needs to be as free flowing as possible for best performance. Depending how far back it was cut, yes it is possible to have bad performance since the gases aren't able to be scavenged out of the cylinders. For example: Cylinder 1 and 4 have exhausted their gases. 2 and 3 will now exhaust their gases in the next stroke and have help from 1 and 4's gases suck them out. This is scavenging. Without a manifold, or a terribly designed one, this can't happen. So, yes you're correct if the exhaust was cut super close to the runners and those runners are exiting into atmosphere pre-maturely, then it will run terribly :)
