Doing a break-in oil change is not something many people do anymore. I still think it's a good idea so I choose to do them. I'm doing this oil change at 626 miles. This is the Base Crosstrek, it comes with the big 2.0L FB20D (direct injection). But wait, there's more! It also has the manual transmission; as any respectable car should.
The parts I used:
Castrol Edge 5W-30 SPI SN+ (SP?)
Mazda N3R1-14-302 Oil Filter
Genuine Subaru crush washer
Drain plug torque was 31 ft-lbs.
Oil filter torque was good and tight.
Oil quantity is "4.7 quarts" (your mileage may vary).

New first change the metal is normal…..not chunks just fines….. my 2018 was like that and I just switched to 5w30 this year after 22000km it’s my sons car now and I just changed his oil at 38000km and a little metal showed up….. little concerned because the car has been well taken care of and I do all the maintenance, so we will be keeping an eye on it, it also measured out 3.92 liters from the 4.4 liters added. So it’s consuming a little.

Prefilling is not needed, just oil the seal and screw it on, dump in some 0W-20 and drive it before the blue light goes off. I'll be using a Purolator BOSS filters in one of my changes.

Good job. Yeah the same engineers that now are going back to 5w30 in canada Yeah right, trust them because they love your money.

We are in the unfortunate position that we must attempt to decipher between what information is from engineers and what information is from “regulations”.

Subarau, like many automakers, puts special oil additives into the oil they put in their new cars. If you change the oil too soon (before their recommended change schedule) you remove those important break-in additives before they should be removed.

I know Honda has a special break in oil, as I have seen an actual Honda Technical Service Bulletin for the service center. I have not heard of any other import manufacturers with a break in oil other than Honda.

I agree with you and why 5w 30 oil
@BorderTurrets

False, break in is the first 1k with a 5k-6k oil change. Thats outdated information you keep repeating from the 70s lol

My EU hybrid is called to warranty in 2500 miles to drain the factory oil. How's that working for you?
@nuenevoie
@nuenevoie 9 месяцев назад
@@BorderTurrets1000 miles is also mentioned in EU manuals for break in driving. These first 1000miles you go up and down the revs not going on red line! After that they call you to 2500 ( 5000km) to do an oil change. After this Subaru Europe calls you from 15.000km to 15.000km for oil changes. How is the weather in Canada vs Europe vs Asian continent...vs Japan. They should have specific grades to those climates Instead they push this 0w20 in hot weather and cold.

Using a different filter and oil, do not affect your warranty?

Wonder if pressure rating of the bypass valve on Mazda filter is the same as on Subaru filter. Any ideas?
@Casey_Schmidt
@Casey_Schmidt 3 месяца назад
It is the same part as the Subaru filter simply with a different label. Subaru has since chosen a different supplier.

? Why didn’t you show oil pan location for draining

Use 0w20 as engineers know what’s best for the vehicle.
@Casey_Schmidt
@Casey_Schmidt Год назад
This car is only uses 0W-20 in the US for emissions reasons. In Japan, Subaru calls for 5W-30.
@thetechlibrarian
@thetechlibrarian Год назад
The engineers might know what’s best, but that’s not the only factor, you also have the marketing department that needs to compete on low running costs, you also have epa and cafe regulations, I know on my Mazda there is a wide range of oil in the book based on location, I haven’t decided to run 5w 30 just yet but I understand the argument
@notTHATtim
@notTHATtim Год назад
I'm all for fuel efficiency. I care about the air we breathe. I'm not opposed to emissions regulations. It's all made a dramatic, positive difference over the last few decades. But automakers still make compromises to hit certain standards in the US. This motor was designed in Japan to run 5W30 and that's what it should run.
@joshmiller2725
@joshmiller2725 Год назад
Does Subaru really call for 5w30 in Japan for this exact engine? If so that’s wild. 0w20 can’t be nearly as good unless it’s a very cold climate
@BorderTurrets
@BorderTurrets Год назад
I use to agree until my 2024 Crosstrek 2.5 said 0w-16 is needed and 0w-20 should only be used in a pinch now. Its clear BS to meet CAFE standards for emissions and I'm done with the thinner oil to get .05% better gas mileage at the cost of my eninge's longevity. There is now way in hell they spec'd ONLY the engines in the US while the rest of the world uses either 0w-20 or 5w-30 without issue. Its clearly a scam at this point.

I use wix or wix xp. Get one of those printed funnels for subaru. Really nice. I use the same crush washer. Never leaks..I'm a subaru guy..I think on my crosstrek I use the whole 5 qt..maybe a little less..I do so many I get mixed up..
@Casey_Schmidt
@Casey_Schmidt Год назад
After a few days of driving, the oil level has settled perfectly at the full mark with only a little bit left in the jug, so just shy of 5 qts. I drive about 500 miles per week so I'll be getting very familiar with this procedure as well. I plan to pick up one of the dedicated Subaru funnels at some point. Thanks for watching!

Doing an oil change too soon, and using the wrong oil. 😑
@Casey_Schmidt
@Casey_Schmidt Год назад
You do you, man!
@BorderTurrets
@BorderTurrets Год назад
Let me guess, you still think that the manufacturer puts in "additives" in the oil to break it in fully ? That's outdated boomer information and the manual says first change at 5-6k miles while taking it easy for the first 1k. However, I changed my oil at 500 then 1000 because of the garbage silicone they use to glue the engine essentially. I've seen Blackstone oil analysis showing a large amount of silicone in the oil during the first 1k miles. Oil is cheap a new engine will cost a fortune.
@Casey_Schmidt
@Casey_Schmidt Год назад
@@BorderTurrets also consider the fact that the oil I drained had a significant shimmer from the suspended metal particles and those were only the particles big enough to see. Who knows what the oil analysis would have shown. I feel better changing the oil sooner to get the remaining manufacturing residues out.
@BorderTurrets
@BorderTurrets Год назад
@@Casey_Schmidt Same, I saw a significant shimmer as well both times I drained. I even inspected that Subaru Blue filter and let me tell you its garbage for sure. I had no clue about Fram making them until I googled who made them for Subaru because I couldnt believe how bad the filter was. Let the dealer try to say fresh oil and a Wix 57055 ruined the car lmao

@christianrojas2488 my subaru hybrid sais to break in 1000 miles. But the next change is jn 10000. Go figure. Eu warranty says to come to change the factory oil in 2500 miles. Why so many BS regulations for the same engine ?? Eu US Asian..Japanese. why?

Get that "Genuine Subaru" blue fram filter and 0w-16 oil change. There's extensive research in how garbage the filter is, how thin the oil is suggested, and I was a sceptic until my "Genuine Subaru Filter's" gasket fell right off lmao. I run 0w-20 and a Wix 57055 on my car.
