Airborne sappers have been declared ready to guard the Royal Palaces after undergoing a rigorous 'fit for role' inspection at Wellington Barracks in central London.
The soldiers from 23 Parachute Engineer Regiment swapped bridge-building and water purification for the parade ground as they prepared to stand guard at Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, St James' Palace, and Windsor Castle.
They'll be carrying out Ceremonial Public Duties for six weeks from late January to March.

Respect to all and will stand in their carrer memories for all time and forever. Didnt serve in RE but my brother did and was proud of him. Time and time again the RE never fail to deliver regarless of what was asked of them performing already difficult tasks in sometimes the most hostile of environments with the airbourne aspect taking at times to yet another level. Wishing all involved well and bless all.

In 1973 I was a sapper on a course at Maidstone. I met a mate from training and asked what he was up to. He said he was making sentry boxes for the palace. I said the palace has plenty of boxes, they don't need more. He explained that the boxes he was making had to be smaller so as to not make the guards look ridiculous. Apparently, the Gurkhas were due to mount the guard for a number of weeks. Physically small maybe, but giants in battle.

Historically the Guards Battalions have done this job, thats why they got the Guards title. In recent years it seems everyone gets a shot, so much for tradition.
@notactuallytesco
@notactuallytesco Год назад
Different regiments have mounted a guard duty for hundreds of years, and it was also very much prevalent during the early-mid 20th Century. Even the Parachute Regiment had a turn back in the 50s. Nothing to do with getting rid of tradition here, in fact it's very much in keeping with it. Merging regiments for no reason on the other hand, can do one.

Or " We help people kill people." That's a joke, by the way. Very few of these lads will have done a jump, and as far as Im concerned if you have not jumped six times and twice by barrage balloon. Have not milled. Have not done P company you do not deserve that Maroon beret.
