This was a very informative video. I've done DNA testing through Ancestry DNA but have been wanting to test through 23andMe since they provide much more information on all the different facets of your DNA. I've just been waiting for them to have an online sale to purchase the test. After seeing this video and all the different results they provide I can't wait to purchase my test. Thanks!

What a great review by a delightful reviewer! Now, I want to get tested. I have some lost relatives, I'm 70, pretty healthy, and not worried about illness markers at this late date. I'm pretty sure I'm mostly Northern European, but you never know, some of my affinities and likes range around the world. Thanks again for such a complete review.

Petrina Hamm Oops, I pushed the wrong button and deleted your comment from public view. UPDATE, since I posted that compliment a few weeks ago, my sister has enrolled and got her results. I will do mine next year. She reports we are both all European but we have some relatives we never knew about. Thanks again for such an excellent review of this product.

This was extremely helpful! Thanks for giving us a walk through. My brother actually did 23andme a few years ago (probably closer to when they started. He's a bio-med engineer so of course he's up on all that) and I've been wanting to try it ever since. I didn't realize you can use your data with other resources! I'm pretty excited to get started and see what I can find out about myself.

If you get a result that reads something like >1% Asian or something like that, it doesn't actually mean any of your family came from Asia. These DNA tests don't tell you exactly where your family literally came from, it's more like it tells you that your DNA shares characteristics similar to people from this part of the world. Because human DNA is so variable both within and between ethnicities, you can share some DNA characteristics with people from an entirely different part of the world, even if none of your family actually came from there. If you actually had some small part of your family that came from Asia, even if it was many generations ago, that percentage would be much higher.

It isn't as unlikely as you think. Servants were brought over from asia and india by Europeans and would be baptised as Christians sometimes with their master's name or with a sort of nickname. They may then have married and had kids, or had illegitimate children with women who may then have brought up the child under a different name again or given up the child to an orphanage. I am not saying that happened in huge numbers, but it probably did happen now and again.

Hi Petrina. I am considering buying a 23and me kit...that is why I watched your video. I have sent my dna from "Ancestry.com to Promethease. That si where I learned that I , too can detect asparagus metabolite in my pee. I bet YOU are the first one to detect a natural gas leak aren't you ? I always have been the first to smell gas. The reason why is that the odorant that they put in gas (mercaptan) is the metabolite you smell in asparagus urine. But the mercaptan in urine is so low in concentration that most people cannot smell it. So therefore, those of us with this trait can smell gas leaks in much lower concentrations than most can !

Your last two service advises are exactly what I was looking for, since being from Europe, 23andMe won't send me any health information, plus I'm really into detailed ancestry mapping, therefore these two third-party sites should be of great help for me. Have you discovered any other worthy third-party sites besides these two you mentioned?

yours is definitely related lol. They predicted mine as a yellowish center and greenish outer. Never seen a human being with yellow eyes lol. They are light brown though.

I'm a mutt. I've always known that but I was very surprised how little of my grandfathers genes (none) my sibling and I have. We KNOW he's native American. His father was kept on a reservation, he was put in an Indian orphanage at the age of 4. He returned to the reservation to visit his father and brother as an adult. He looks native American, his kids look native American..... my genes show none but my daughter show a trace amount. Kind of odd. The Mongolian gene that is so old no one knows where it came from shows up. Not only in a genetic heart defect but also in our DNA.Weird.

I'm also waiting to get my results back. The medical and health info is fascinating but I don't know how I will treat it, based on the fact that the results are "likely". One (traits) example is that I am the only member of my known family to have brown eyes. Will my results reveal that I am likely to have blue or green eyes? It's not a health issue but it is an example of how one may express a smaller possibility within the DNA program.

Petrina, I enjoyed your video, but I went for just simple ancestry, for $99.00 pus tax, came to $108 and some odd cents. I only wanted my ancestry and they offered this first. I didn't want the other stuff at this particular time just yet. My question for you, is how come you didn't mention just the ancestry desired only in your review?

is there a way to test how likely it might be to get some sort of cancer? for example some smokers smoked their whole life dying at 90+ due to old age and some get lung cancer in their 30s.

You can upload your data into Promethease and get an idea of cancer risk from certain genes; but it's not a guarantee. Just because you carry certain genes, doesn't necessarily mean you'll fall ill to things associated with that gene. Make sense?

Yes, but not a lot. You'll see if there's a certain percentage of Native American (but I don't believe it will tell you which specific tribe). Hope that helps!

Hi Petrina, do you get the actual aligned sequence file from the company? For example, if I'm interested to look at a specific gene that is not inclcuded in the "results", can I go back to the raw data and have a look? Cheers!

It's not true that you can see your whole genome - that is a much much more expensive test and access to it is generally restricted. With 23andME, AncestryDNA and FamilyTreeDNA they only report on a 'sampling' of SNPs of your genome - the more interesting bits from a genealogical perspective. The Raw DNA file you download from them is in text form so readable but as you will learn from Promethease the DNA information in the raw DNA file has not been 'Oriented' - for $5 upload it to Promethease and get the correct "Orientation". Of the 3 testing sites I mentioned apparently AncestryDNA samples the smallest number of SNPs.

I apologize for the audio problems. I've used less background music in my more current videos. There is a transcription for video- turn the cc on and you'll be able to know every single word spoken in the video.

Sadly, it lumps British and Irish together into one category. You may be able to dig a bit more specifically by uploading raw data into other online tools but I'm not 100% sure.

23andme offers quite a bit of info if you buy health kit. You can also tap into studies based research by uploading the raw data you get from 23andme into promethease.com/. It's just $5 and very informative!

+Greencloud8 It depends on whether you'd like to know what paternal haplogroup you fall under. If you're a female, 23andme cannot discern your paternal haplogroup. OK I only have a dad and a brother from the paternal line. My cousins are all females except my cousins son which is my first cousins son but hes like 2 years old... anyway, do I as a female get other paternal information other than the OBVIOUSLY not getting haplogroup) get any information from my ethnicity from my dads side? Also if my brother does this will we be missing the maternal haplogroup side?

My question is do I find my ethnicity on my grandpas side? I am a female, I do this test, do I find the ethnicity from my dads father. We really don't know anything about them? Or if my brother does this do we get MORE information about paternal side? Is there a maternal haplogroup

+Greencloud8 I don't believe you can isolate to determine where ethnicity comes from as far as paternal and maternal side...it will simply give you a breakdown. Haplogroups allow you to see faaaaar back when it comes to origins of your ancestors. You'll get paternal haplogroup based on a male relative's result. Both males and females will receive maternal haplogroup designation.

+John Simms I think it's a small price to pay for all you get but there are many who complain about the price. I believe you can get it done for less with Ancestry - but I like what 23andme are doing when it comes to DNA research.

I'm not 100% sure as I've never done an Ancestry kit but from sound of this article, I don't think it does as part of its report; but you can figure it out with a few steps: www.geneticgenealogist.net/2016/01/how-to-get-ydna-haplogroup-from.html. If anyone else out there is an Ancestry DNA customer and can give a more accurate response, please comment.

You upload raw data to Promethease and see if you have certain genetic predispositions to cancer, diabetes and other medical issues. It's not a guarantee that you'll fall ill though so don't take it as a medical diagnosis.

There is actually a particular sect of Jewish persons who have the highest IQ in the human race. It's amazing to think how unique we all are. Of course I'm jealous but comparing yourself to others is no way to live. Do your best to understand the things you know and always be open to learning and UNDERSTANDING new things. That is the way to have a truly full life. Learning to mock or repeat information, which is how our schools "teach" is FAR from understanding the information you are being fed and regurgitating.

A little sting taken...but yes, I know. I had pneumonia as an infant and the tetracycline stained my teeth. The 2 front top got the worst of it, so I've had them bonded. Chemo this past year has taken a toll too.

Petrina Shows let me reiterate that you are naturally beautiful. We all get a few shades darker as we get older. i always find the americans who take this test to be mostly proud of the minority percentages, the genes which they consist the least of, like, for example, they may see that they are 34% Iberian or British & Irish, and then they read 2,3% african and just yell, W0000 im african Yo! -_- Dude, identify with what ur mostly composed of ;P im w8ing for my results atm, and if it says that im 46% scnadinavian and 1% ashkenazi for example, why would i call myself jewish ? o_O it would be embarrasing and even insulting to people who even are ashkenazi, or west african, or whatever small % you might get of any race ;P

Pretty much- or as I like to say "hopelessly Caucasian." I fry like a fish 5 minutes in the sun. Worst sunburn ever was standing in line for something at Disney World right before summer vacation ended. They called me "Lobster" that year. Good times.
