I have had a lot of ideas of tools, filters, and sort options I'd like to see on DNA test websites. I think these tools will help streamline genetic genealogy workflows and even generate new leads in connecting DNA matches.

A lot of the features you have on your wish list are over my head technical or advanced, but I did understand the photograph one. I know there are multiple family photos I keep hanging onto that even my grandmother couldn't identify. What a Godsend that would be. More power to you - keep up the good work. I pray for you. Your enthusiasm to fill in your family tree is contagious.

Yes, I have ancestors on glass negatives. Nobody knows who they are.

Your idea on photos is the best. Many years ago, at least 45, I was given a bunch of photos from the attic of my uncle's (my dad's oldest brother) house when he moved. At best we can tell one of the albums probably belonged to my great-grandmother's older sister. It contained many photos of members of her husband's family and her family from the late 1800's. Over the years I have located several branches and shared many photos but there are still many relatives are unknown. Someone did write names on them, and I have tried to track some down using census records but have not been successful. Photos are for sharing.

In Ancestry, when you look up a family on the census, Ancestry will provide a link for other records with the same name. Click on a few and then send a message with the photo included, I sent a photo from a year book I had to a family member. (not my family).

I would love the admixture filter! My husband has the exact issue you described. My work around so far is to manually sort the high Jewish readings manually into their own group but it is SO time consuming.

Your thoughts on the photos tool made me think of an issue I wish they would implement a fix for. I want to be able to upload a photo like I would on Facebook. I want to be able to tag everyone I can, all at once. When you hover your cursor over it, it'll put the name over whoever is in the photo rather than having to specify that Grandma B is the baby being held by the woman in the second row, 3 in from the right and then also having that photo connect to ALL the profiles I've tagged in it. That does not at all feel too complex since you can basically do it with other social site already. Now, there's one photo tool that I'd REALLY love but it is more complex so I imagine we're still down the track from it a ways rather than behind the curve, and that's facial recognition. Though, the tech is there. My iPhone does it. I just haven't seen a website do it yet. I'd love to be able to upload a photo of say, my grandparent's wedding, and the site go, "Hey, we see you've uploaded an image with only 2 of the 4 faces identified. We think the other two people in your photo might be X and Y." and it would come up as a hint... just like the intuitive records matching. And I can't tell you how useful a tool that I could say, "I only want shared matches for these 3 people" would have been when trying to hunt down the descendants of my Great-Uncle. Not just saying, "hey, I want to see ppl related to me on my mother's side" but to be able to skew it further with a cousin's profile would have been SO HELPFUL! I'm acutely aware of the luxury of time I have to dedicate to my research endeavors. Most people can't spend 6hrs straight looking for one missing piece, to pick up the search the next day. I can also imagine how such tools you mentioned would lower the cost of professional genealogical services since it could shave hours off of projects and when individual projects take less time, they cost less & entice more people to ask for professional help because they can more easily afford it.

I'm sure you've already considered this, but that picture of the nicely dressed people at a round table might be at a wedding or some other event Barmitzva? In the possibility that it's a 1950's event, who got Married or turned 13 in the 1950/60s? Interesting. I love family pictures, they look like lovely people and I just see family resemblances in the faces ❤ beautiful!

Yep, already did an analysis like that and nothing on my side of the family that I could locate. My guess is that this is an event they attended which was for a currently unknown relative.

When I first tested with Ancestry I had traces of North Africa and African DNA since then I have been whitewashed but not before I was able to identify other relatives with the same traces. I know it can help people with predominantly African Admixtures trace back to the area where my relatives were slave Owners.

I'd like Ancestry to up their DNA game by creating pseudo DNA kits for ancestors. They could easily take all the DNA kits of all descendants of a person and create a pseudo kit. Then that would be a DNA profile for that person that could be compared to the other pseudo kits. So basically you could look at great great grandma's DNA matches and see her hypothetical 1st and 2nd cousins and maybe even closer.

@@GeneaVlogger I need to learn more about Gedmatch but any blogs I’ve come across are years out of date as are most videos. Heck. Lots of videos showing best ways to maximize your researching & dna matches are pre pandemic at best. And even when you find a video that suggests downloading info from X site and uploading it to Y and Z… they don’t even show how to do it. Apparently you can get the raw data out of Ancestry & upload it to some site & get a report you can go over with your doc even? It’s all so confusing.

Well done, as usual. I like the future possibilities for genetic genealogy that you sketch! My "worst" endogamous population (1/4 of my total) comes from a small island off the west coast of Scotland, where they also have an extremely limited range of "official" surnames and forenames, depending for social life on mostly-unrecorded nicknames added on as the individual developed. Oh such fun....

Brilliant idea of the photos, Jarrett! A step further would be using AI to compare facial features and match people based on their photos. Or even building a database correlating molecular and facial features and using that as a super advanced tool.

My paternal grandmother did extensive genealogical research, but one sticking point was researching her chosen Revolutionary War soldier any further back, due to the British burning down the church where the parish records were kept, due to guns being stored there. It might be helpful to DNA match with other SAR and DAR members whose ancestors came from the same New York-Connecticut region. Have you considered such a matching functionality, piggybacking on classic genealogy to find other vectors?
@MattGoings
@MattGoings 2 месяца назад
These are great ideas! I really hope companies are considering them. I’m also curious how AI could play a role in photographs. It’s already helping a lot with transcribing massive amounts of old documents.

AI tree building, to create trees for those not familiar with it or with no information. AI interpreting of individual chromosomes and segments using matches trees to determine descent. And, of course, a chromosome browser with auto cluster and tree tagging ability, on Ancestry.

3:32 multiple kit matching tool - while I think that is a great thing to have, I'm afraid it will cause some matches would be lost when there are too many kits as it is not frequent someone will match everyone

I don't have the problem of Jewish endogamy, but my father's WV extreme pedigree collapse is bad enough. I love your ideas, especially re notification settings! I am so 'yeah, right'with notifications from Geneanet or Living DNA, or any of the smaller databases..... Usually look, but with 6, 7,8, 9 cMs, and all paternal, they are a waste of time. Also would love for Ancestry to allow paternal/maternal limits on notifications now that they have the parental split!!! If it's maternal, I may be able to trace even as low as an 8, but I prefer 10. But don't bother me with paternals less than 20, thanks! ;)

I recently saw a young woman, being... interviewed, with the last name Nunez, (with a Tilde~) on channel 'Flock Finger Lakes.' Maybe she or her husband is 'family.' They have bought some land and are interested in people, quality of life/social and land development. Feliz Navidad y Un Ano Prospero Nuevo 2024. ❤️

great ideas. I was looking at a photo today that was in the newspaper, due to the setting and of course the article, I knew it was my grandfather, but its the only photo that I've ever seen of my grandfather in his teen years close up. I last looked at the photo 20 years ago, and today at I was "wow, that's my dad!" No, it's definately not my father but the resemblence of the 2 at that age is striking. Now, if someone could identify the baby pictures which I have that are unlabeled, could be from either of my grandparent's ancestries, that would be amazing, but I"m not sure that even AI could do that at least yet.

Doesn't Myheritage have something close to what your saying? When I upload old photos they provide suggestive hints on who it may be in the picture i.e they will say who is this/ is it this person? I think they use some AI in it. I think it will be Myheritage that will push forward in the areas you are referring to. They seem to be the ones that push the boundaries. They have just realeased the tool that guesses the year a photo was taken. I would like to see some better phasing algorithms for Myheritage uplaoded kits. Weeding out the false postives. Surely the technology and AI is there now.
