I wish that everyone who hears this could hear this psalm as I listen, twenty-five years after my mother died in hope of the resurrection. This beautiful words capture only the trailing glory that was her life here on earth. I wish that didn’t sound so ‘romantic’, but I can not find the right words to tell you how permanent and real her love for everyone, so clearly seen by her children, was and is.
Bobby McFerrin, your mother was my first Voice Teacher. She truly was an inspiration to work with. I saw some of your concerts back in the 80's, truly awe inspiring. I use some of your recordings in my teaching lessons now. Has your mother passed. She is a beautiful soul and a great mentor. This is so beautiful, Thank you
I did this piece with my college choir a few years ago, and I was the only student who recognized the name Bobby McFarrin (Don't Worry, Be Happy was on repeat a lot when I was 5 years old).
A beloved mentor, teacher, friend, who will soon pass, blessed many of us today with his last lecture. He is a Benedictine monk, a priest, a college professor, a prep-school headmaster, a translator, a faculty resident in student dormitories, a guide, a mentor, a leader. In the middle of his last lecture, he played the music from this video to share with us one of the things that was comforting him during his final days. He listens to it so often, he says, that he doesn't need to listen to it in order to hear it. I hope in his moment of passing that he hears angels and Jesus and God herself singing him home.
Even Martin Luther thought of himself as a great person-- greater than the Pope. So I don't know what your point is. Do you think Our Lord is happy being referred to as the wrong gender?
Catechism of the Catholic Church #239: " We ought therefore to recall that God transcends the human distinction between the sexes. He is neither man nor woman: he is God. He also transcends human fatherhood and motherhood, although he is their origin and standard" Sorry man, God is genderless, that's the Church speaking, not me
@@johnx5891 Yes. Yes, I do. For anyone to free Our Lord from anthropomorphic hindrances, break chains of self righteous elitism, would create great happiness. Another small step away from elitism, and towards God-fulness, away from mis-spent energies to put man-made limits on God's Love.
The 23rd Psalm brought me to Jesus. Jesus made it go on in my brain ~ over and over ~ and finally he reeled me right in. I was "told" by my quiet, still voice to get a picture of Jesus while I had the 23rd Psalm going through my brain non-stop. When I got the picture of Jesus and put it on my wall, that was it! I am 100% devoted to Him. I lay it all at Jesus feet. It is me and Jesus all the way to the end. Amen!
God is Love - this is what this song is about. God is Love, and in the most fundamental way, in most cultures and nations and countries, Love is most clearly seen as Mother, unconditional love expressed. Thank you for this fabulous recording! Special!
Love how so many people are so hung up on the Lord being referred to with female pronouns because they’re so set on God being male completely ignoring that all people both male and female are made in the image of God, and as such, God by necessity transcends such categorization as we could hope to give to him/her/them
God is every THING and every BODY. Just listen and open your heart. If you can't feel what he's trying to tell you, move on. This is just not for you...yet...
"Il me fait reposer dans de verts pâturages, il me dirige près des eaux paisibles. Il restaure mon âme, il me conduit dans les sentiers de la justice, à cause de son nom. Quand je marche dans la vallée de l'ombre de la mort, je ne crains aucun mal, car tu es avec moi : ta houlette et ton bâton me rassurent."
Wokeness... and the battle against "toxic masculinity". God is neither male nor female but presented Himself as He to humans with a purpose. Hebrew is a "gendered" language with clear distinction between male and female. Not that one is better than the other, it's only that distinctions matter to Him. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6YXzywDWc1k.html
@@circleake there's no indication of a key change in the score. This performance just went flat; could be that they didn't hear each other well in this context.

I know that this is a long shot, but I am wondering if I might have permission to show this in a vigil on Saturday night in response to the nightmare of Roe ending...
God is genderless. People throughout time and all across the globe have recognized God in many ways. The important part is that people love and respect the Creator, Mother, Father, Great Spirit, etc. Don't forget.... It's not our job to judge.
You people are so dense. This song was for his grandmother .He’s a very religious person. If you listen to the words you’ll realize that he was not talking about God
Who is "she"? "He makes me lie down and He restores my soul"! You can have great music and words but pls don't change Gods words. God warning is don't add or take away from my words. This song although lovely is foundational wrong and hugely offensive.
@@jimmy_keegan_drums Though he has no gender, GOD himself chooses to be referred to in the masculine. And on every occasion in prayer to god Jesus called GOD his father.
I am sorry your God is so small, to be upset about he or she. This God made 200 billion trillon stars (latest estimate) and knows the numbet of hairs on your head.
When asked, Jesus specifically told believers to address God as "Our Father". Not mother, or they/them, or in any other such nonsensical, disrespectful way. What gives anyone the bare faced audacity to ignore this and impose a ludicrously malignant, 21st century, politically correct designation to our Creator? I love Bobby and have nothing but respect for his unique, God given talent. But to compromise with the degenerate, woke agenda is fundamentally wrong.
*20th century. This adaptation was created by one of his female vocalists back in 1990. And it had nothing to do with a "woke" agenda. It had everything to do with the goddess worship that preceded patriarchal Abrahamic religion by thousands of years. The concept of God as polytheistic has been around MUCH longer than the concept of a singular masculine God. Sources (assuming you even have the good faith to question your beliefs and read books that challenge your worldview): The Great Cosmic Mother, by Monica Sjoo and Barbara Mor When God Was a Woman, by Merlin Stone These two books were written back in the 70s and 80s, and they were not part of the post-modern lineage that gave rise to what today we call "woke."
According to what YOU arrogantly believe is THE only spiritual way to have a relationship with Father God, Mother God the Holy Spirit and the Son who encompasses us puny minded, petty humans. Get over yourself.
Awful what they doing with the Holy Word of The Almighty Elohim! You can't do that and there is no excuse or art commentary on this. If you refer to somebody else write your own poem, but don't change the Word of G-D and worship Him in Jesus Christ the Lord of Lords and our all Savior. Maranath!a! Bless your heart and may you find mercy in His sight
If you're referring to the gender God is referred to as: Catechism of the Catholic Church #239: "We ought therefore to recall that God transcends the human distinction between the sexes. He is neither man nor woman: he is God. He also transcends human fatherhood and motherhood, although he is their origin and standard". That's the teachings of the Church, just to clear things up. Any image can be used to describe God, the image of the mother or the father are equally acceptable.
Bobby McFerrin is a genius musician who focuses his mind only on sound - not on word. Otherwise he would have chosen a less ridiculous and less ideological translation of this beautiful Psalm. Too bad...Mr.McFerrin, you are too BIG, too iconic, too immortal - you don't have to blandish politically corretct ideologists.
Maybe you are reading too deep and implying your own agenda. This was arranged purely as a dedication to his mother. Aside from the gender reversal, the text is from the version he knew from his church. Translation is ever changing. Regarding gender, if one believes in God or higher power, whatever they be called, one must also recognize that we cannot truly know/comprehend God in this life. Only aspire to that understanding or knowledge. His idea was that by switching the gender, we can imply that God is beyond our ideas of gender and greater than just one thing as gender suggests limitations. All the best!
This is not MY agenda. I am not the author of the Bible and this is where Psalm 23 comes from. And believe it or not - God is refered to with third person singular AND masculine pronoun. In Hebrew it looks like this: "יְנַהֲלֵֽנִי׃" ( He leads me ...), or יַרְבִּיצֵ֑נִי ( He makes me lie down...) or שְׁמֽוֹ׃ ( ...of His name...) or יְשׁוֹבֵ֑ב ( ....He restores......). Sometimes the Biblical author uses a direct apostrophe to God, than he uses the second person singular "you" which for obvious reason is a genderless form of address. So - HE or YOU and NEVER She - at least for those who believe in God as is described in the Bible. Tertium non datur - at least here, in Psalm 23. McFerrin of course may believe in any form of supernatural Being and his church may describe this Being in any linguistic form they wish, but once they've chosen Bible as the source of this description they may not invent content and pretend they've found it in the Psalm, because in the Psalm there is no such content. God is beyond our comprehension, this is true, and we will never fully comprehend God. And we don't even have to. It is enough for us to understand the relevant, crucial or substantial part of God's nature which for some reason He revealed to us. Those who acknowledge the authority of the Bible as God's message - they also acknowledge masculinity of God - he is Father, not mother, Jesus is his son - not daughter. Why? Because this is how they are refered to in the Bible. Can McFerrin or anybody else - believe in ANY form of a supernatural Being? Yes,of course. Do the have the right to call it whichever words they chose? Yes, of course. Can they call God as is described in the Bible - She? No. Why?Because HE God is called in the Bible.
Ahh the roots of patriarchy. Also the reason we are slow to advance spiritually. The purpose was not to suggest his song is “bible” but to simply make us see the women around us in a more divine light. Too many people read text written a particular way by some random person or people hundreds of years after the events happened and now believe it as the only possible way it can be. Relax! It’s not blasphemy. It’s just a tool to expand our comprehension and compassion. Furthermore, referring to God exclusively as our father is short sighted. If God is the creator of all things, then God is father and mother. But remember, father and mother are earthly human concepts. Why limit? Languages and how we interpret them change with time and understanding.
