24 HOURS: Camping in a Trash Tunnel Stealth Shelter | Norwegian Military MRE | Solo Overnight

Join me on a 24 hour solo overnight building a tunnel shelter using trash bags. I build a basic bushcraft shelter using woven sticks and cover it with recycled plastic bin bags. To survive the night, I eat Norwegian Arctic Field Rations, the most advanced NATO approved field ration in the world today. This style of shelter has been used by travellers for hundreds of years. The great thing about it is that you can make it as large or as small as you like.

I really love that you got to try the Norwegian military MRE! I'm from Norway and commented on your last 24 hours episode, hoping that you would get your hands on the Norwegian one! And you did! In Norway we are able to buy the individual meals in some stores where they sell sports equipment, and in elementary school we used to go on mountain trips before each summer vacation, and I used to buy some of those meals, and it is very easy to make and tastes really good! So happy with this 24 hours episode! Cheers!

You should pick a weekend when they're calling for rain and stormy conditions and camp out in one of the shelters. Or try and build a quick shelter either or but then you could test waterproof products and you could give people tips on how to cope with the rain.

If you try this again, cut the bags on the sides instead and you can layer them like shingles and then they should stretch the length of the shelter to provide waterproofing. You can put one on each side and then the top one last. So if it should rain, the water will run off due to the shingling technique

Former Norwegian medic here. The producers of the field ration is REAL(in Norwegian this is a word for genuine/solid, as in a genuine/solid meal), who produces instant meals both for civilian use as well as military use. This is why their packaging is quite "commercial" looking with different languages. The civilian rations are orange and the the military ones are green as shown here and have more calories. If you are a civilian trying these its quite easy to judge them based on just the one you're trying, but remember that however good one menu is its not going to taste as good after you've eaten it 100 times in the field, which is why there are so many menus. Variety is the most important factor in making sure a soldier enjoys their food. My personal favourites were the "lapskaus"(a type if traditional Norwegian stew) and the "fiskekaker i kremet carrisaus"(fishcakes in creamed curry sauce). The wraps must be new, as I haven't seen those before. God on you for trying though! The protein bars kept me going a lot of the time as I didn't really gave much time to prepare food being a medic and all. The coffee is also amazingly good for being instant. Great video as always! Looking forward to the next one already.

Hi, as a Norwegian, I can confirm all your points. I have tried all of MREs from Real. In addition to the field meal (I mean how many spoons do you need for a longer trip?), you can get the freeze-dried pouches in the same green wrapping alone or a smaller version in orange. I recommend to dig into the different menus, they are all excellent!

Last year I watched a bushcraft video where a lady commented who was homeless (in US) but had been put up in an hotel during lockdown so could watch it. She had terminal cancer but was watching out for her friends. Quite heart-breaking and no replies, she'd posted several months after the release. She had thanked the guy for giving tips for a life her and her friends were living. So, if you want suggestions, how about what you'd do if you were suddenly homeless. Who knows, any of us could find ourselves in such a position, especially after lockdown destroyed so many jobs and businesses across the world. Might be useful to see a video coming at bushcraft from another angle, though I'm sure plenty of vets use it daily, at least the ones who are sleeping rough even on UK streets.

There are several homeless survival channels on RU-vid. I find one can learn a lot from watching them - not just as a social commentary, but excellent advice as well, should the situation ever arise. We are none of us as far away from homelessness as we think - it just takes the perfect storm of events personalized to our own lifestyles. When you watch them it will make you cringe every time some jackass calls a homeless person lazy.
@mrmicro22
@mrmicro22 3 года назад
I cast no aspersions but if you subtract the substance abuse and the mental health issues (which are often intertwined), the homeless population is magnitudes smaller. It is a misnomer to ever describe it as a housing problem.
@purpuradraco3747
@purpuradraco3747 3 года назад
@@mrmicro22 Known a few homeless or ex homeless in the UK over the years and that’s just one person seeing it, none of whom had mental health issues or substance abuse problems. Purely a matter of they fell through the cracks. Latest was just prior to lockdown, friend of mine had to wait months to get a place which they gave him just as lockdown hit so he didn’t have anything to put in his new place, I had to sort him out with camping gear after having put him up for a year rather than see him on the street. 5 years ago when my ex made me sell my family home so she could have the lions share, the local council did pull out the stops and got me a place before I was homeless myself, though I do have disabilities so they prioritised me. Even then I still had to wait ages and even after they offered me the place in November they wouldn’t let me move in until March. Lucky for me it coincided exactly when my house sold, pure luck too.

Here's a TIP for when you're preparing the real/drytech dinner: Cut apart the bottom corners of the vacuum bag and fold them out so that the bottom becomes flat. (just be careful as not to puncture the bag). This will make it easier to get all the food mixed in and hydrated, and also makes the bag more stable when put on the ground. Another tip is to tear the tab below the zip lock AFTER its done hydrating the food. This way the bag is more shallow and easier to eat from with a short spoon.

In most scenarios a person will have some sort of pack or travel baggage which needs to go somewhere. If it is rain or snow, the thing to do is take a trash bag and cover your pack with the trash bag opening down. This can be placed at the foot end of the trash shelter to block much or most of the wind. A couple more bags filled with leaves can close up gaps if needed (preferably prepared before rain gets bad)

Not sure how many bags you had (or how many bags you planned to use) but you can make a Quonset hut style shelter using your bags take two long poles and several bag with a hole in each of the bottom two corners. Tuck all the bags into each other with the holes aligned and then insert the poles. Pull each bag about halfway out of the bag it is in until you have what looks like a stretcher. If that bag stretcher isn’t wide enough for your hoop, make three stretchers and tie one on each side, then a third at the top over lapping both cutting small holes on the edge of the stretcher will allow and rain that gets inside the bags to drain down and drip onto the outside of the lower panels. You can also hold the bags down by making a second hoop and rod structure directly above the plastic, pinning it in place. So a process COULD be repeated to add layers of weather resistance

Remember during my boot camp, one of the recruits thought that the silica packet in the ration was a "spice" mix and drizzled it over a Cinnabon. To their defence, it was after a long march and it was dark in the tent xD

I loved this. I use 55 gallon drum liner bags in my E&E kit. I have 2 bags, 1 for cover and 1 as ground mat that I stuff with leaves or use as sleeping bag depending on the cold. At least once a year I camp for several days like this to keep my skills up.

Sorry Mike, but you're mistaken when it comes to adding that "extra" bin bag to keep your shelter dry. I can tell you from personal experience that when you overlap plastic that way, even with a foot or more of overlap, the inside will still get wet. Anytime one layer is laying directly over another layer (meaning in direct contact) water will leak through, due to capillary action. The better way to go, when you add that extra layer, is to leave a gap between it and the lower layer.

You could use some of that bracken from where you cut the saplings for your shelter as bedding which would make your night much more comfortable. Also if you build one end of the shelter lower then the other and use your trash bags like shingles the water would run off and it wouldn't run inside also running a trench/ ditch along the long side/ drip edge of the shelter will keep the water from running inside of the shelter and flooding you out, (been there, done that before!) Just some suggestions. Great shelter and a very good idea in a survival situation, this could be made in a very short time with very minimal tools and materials.

Many of these are really good! if its a green bag it is dinner and white bag breakfast. breakfast is usually some type of oatmeal or barley with berries. The good thing about the breakfast meals is that they're better with cold water than with hot. My personal favorite is: Creamy pasta with pork and herbs. It's not just a good MRE, its an actual good meal. ( and if you get the honey roasted nuts in the bag, your in for a treat!)
