McLaren F1 GTR. For the fact that it wasn't intended to be a racecar by Gordon Murray's own words yet went on to win outright against all the prototypes in 1995. Likely the last street car which will ever do so.
Sorry to burst your bubble but the "real" prototypes aka Group C were effectively banned the year before with the less powerful LMP94/WSC being the only protos which might have had a chance. The C34 did just one lap less in the end after losing massively in the early hours due to rain and losing six laps due to an accident. That was one of the many LM races which was won by the car with simply less trouble than the others, not because the car was better. Just look at the total number of laps, the F1 just managed to do 298 laps whereas the LMP1 Porsche did 354 laps in the following year - 16 more than the best F1 that year - and the "LMGT1" Dauer 962 - which was basically a C1 - did 344 laps the year before.
That Iconic Jaguar XJR-9 in Silk Cut colours. I was fortunate enough to see the Number 2 car at Le Mans this year as part of a display stand at the 24Hr, it's even more breathtaking in person.
Thank you! This really puts things into a correct perspective. One can not argue about race results; they are what they are! One of the many reasons why I love motor sport. G.
I know it didnt win but mine would have to be the gorgeous 1971 917 LH, plus shout out to the '68/9 winning GT40, a car well past it's sell-by date then.
First of all thank you for taking your time and watching the video. And thanks for noticing it. I was questioning it myself but made a mistake researching it.
Beautiful cars, shame about the aspect ratio. Note to Sportnerd: if the wheels look oval, and the crowd look like hobbits, you need to adjust the image!
I can't imagine driving for hours and hours in an open cockpit, no headrest, no seat belts, and flexy spoke wheels. Those old classic cars were so unsafe. Yikes 😮
In those days it was more common that racing drivers would compete in different classes. Hawthorns win was bittersweet because he was responsible for a big crash in the 1955 Race wich led to many spectators dying after the accident.
My absolute favourite is the iconic Mazda 787B. There's always Porsce/Audi/Mercedes and the like amongst the winners. Not really any surprises in that. Then comes this little Japanese team with their 4-chamber Rotary engine and beat them all. Hats off to that. Listening to he Mazda going full speed the Mulsanne strait gives every petrol head a boner. ....
Toyota does not deserve to be a part of this list because of the fact that they stayed after Porsche and Audi withdrew their participation in endurance racing. There was no competition and in a desperate attempt to win Le Mans Toyota stayed "just to win"....I guess a win is a win BUT STILL
Sounds like a whole lot of copium chief. Let’s reexamine this one in a few years after the LMH and LMDH classes are fully fleshed out and see where things are at then.
It's still an achievement to keep a car like that running for 24 hours. Might not have had the competition in Audi and Porsche but there were plenty of other teams within striking distance if Toyota had problems.
