Good honest review , my driving style achieves 5.1 - 6.9 miles / Kwh . The Ioniq really is a very efficient car . I used to spend over £60 per month on diesel , but pay less than £9 per month in leccy to do the same mileage . I am glad I took the plunge when I did , and recommend anyone looking for a new vehicle to give any EV a try .
Fantastic review! I've been watching as many EV videos as I can find and it's great to have a no nonsense, normal person just talking about the car and comparing it to the Leaf. Plus you're a really nice bloke that can talk clearly! I'll be checking out all of your other videos now!

Nice review. I've had my Ioniq for nine months. The bar across the back window is great at night as most headlights are blocked by it :) The water on the back window only happens at low speed. The shape with its extremely low drag 2.4 Cd keep it clear most of the time and has my average up to 5.5 MKh (154 miles per charge).
Sounds like you really know how to drive it efficiently. I think you are the third owner that has pointed out the benefits of the spoiler at night. It obviously isn't as much of an issue as I first thought😁
The Ioniq is my first EV and I find it a very nice place to be on my daily commute. On the shallow boot, yes, but it is well shaped and deep in length. Certainly no problems with getting a week's shopping for a family of four, plus both chargers, plus the usual boot rubbish I lug about in it. Pity Hyundai can't get their act together and deliver the blasted things.
+Ally Liddiard I liked the little cubbyholes under the boot mat. They have tried to use all the available space. I've said for a while that if Hyundai could meet demand then the Ioniq would outsell every other EV on the market several times over. The Kona EV will only increase demand. I hope they have planned for the amount of sales they will get 🤞
Subscribed. Our Ioniq arrived last week and though it's our first EV so it's our only experience of one, I agree with most of what you say. The rear spoiler is undoubtedly important for that .24 drag coefficient, but does hamper rear visibility. Not as much as it does for you, though, I don't think. I can see cars sufficiently for it to serve its purpose in my opinion. I've done a video on it.
Hi 3 years on and the updated version bigger battery masses of apps and the all round driving experience superb. Only 2 faults I have with mine is again the tail end spoiler (the rear view camera can be turned on to help with rear view) and one you didn’t mention the colour scheme i chose. I picked the new silver grey paint job it’s to die for, But… On the inside everything is beautiful till you look through the screen from the driving position; the dashboard is a very light grey and on a sunny day reflects back from the screen making life a bit disconcerting. I have got over that by laying some black felt over the dashboard. As we don’t get too much sun here in UK it can be only a minor problem lol. I’ve been driving for over 50 years Trucks and Cars this is the best car ever for me. Oh shortly after I got it I went for a spin, as you do, on Burtonwood Services there is a whole rack of Tesler charging points (only 2 for us lackies). A guy drove on with a Tesler 3 and I obviously had to have a look. I wasn’t all that impressed with the cars look but it has lots of toys to play with including updates over the internet 0 - 60 in less than 3 secs is what your paying for I think. Unlucky we only have 5” displays and no memory seat even I paid for the top models of safety+. The wife doesn't seem to appreciate car interiors. This is a budget EV and for that price if has an amazing interior. I've driven luxury cars and don't see what the big deal is. The Ioniq has a very functional and nice interior.
as someone who primarily does city driving, this would be an amazing car. Most of my driving is in stop and go traffic which means, I spend a lot of gas for no reason.
Found this on the internet it might answer your comment about .. At the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show, Hyundai also announced Amazon Alexa smart-home integration, which includes the ability to start and stop remote charging via voice command. This feature will be available on the Ioniq Electric and Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid, as well as the Sonata Plug-In Hybrid midsize sedan. Plus it could be getting a higher density battery, which I believe the new 2018 Nisan Leaf has. many thanks for the video.
Cracking review. I am very interested in going electric. I tried an early Leaf and was impressed with the car but not the dealer or the range, so the 30kwh version would be better. I test drove an early i3 and all the points you raised are spot on, and i was driven around Norway in my mates Zoe 40 and was impressed with the range not so much the seating. The Ioniq hybrid was great for space but not driving experience so i am keen to try the all electric version. The charging network in Northampton is alas really poor.
I have to make a confession . I forgot to add that most of time , I drive my Ioniq in eco mode , which I am pretty sure explains my MILES/kWH figures . That said with 857'142 traffic cameras in London added to all-day bumper to bumper traffic , not much point in being in any other mode .
Very honest and thorough review and very helpful to none (yet) EV drivers like myself. I guess in capability it is more like the 30 kwh Leaf. One of the issues, in terms of entering the EV market as a second hand buyer (as I would be doing) is that there is no critical mass of used Ionics or Renault Zoes for that matter and that must give Nissan a continuing advantage in the mass market EV sector. If I was buying new then the lack of connectivity would be an issue so I lean more to the Leaf but it's all about opinions. Finally, Mrs EV Opinion doesn't seem that impressed! Look forward to further videos in due course.

Great review. I have yet to drive one but from what I've seen so far from reviews and the dealership it's top of my list. The new leaf looks good and is an improvement on the older model, but the Ioniq appears to be a better all around package. It will be interesting to see if the announcements of a bigger battery in 2018 are true. The split rear window doesn't bother me, my 2007 prius was the same and the bar was the perfect height to block headlight glare from chunky SUVs and vans.
only problem with this beautiful car I test drove a month or so ago is A it will be getting a much bigger battery next year and B the waiting list is really bad over 6 to 8 months so why go for this model with that much time delay wait for the newer bigger capacity. Ps to compare a 7 year old (a lifetime or two models in the leafs lifespan) with a new model is not really fair :) ps I drove the leaf this week and the driving position is much higher and nicer for me.
+George Lawther the different driving position is really noticeable between the two cars. I edited the part out where I spoke about that but I agree. The Leaf is much higher.
Good report. The best. My Wife and I have a Sonata 2013 we bought. new and we had a Elantra. We love those cars. Thinking about the Plug in Hybrid. Haven’t seen any reviews from you on that Car. How did you manage to get it for 24 hours? I took the managers Ionic from Hyundai Liverpool. It was the only fully electric ionic they had in stock. It is a absolutely agree with you that this car is a step up from the leaf. But it is to be expected as the leaf is based on a 2011 platform still. The things I enjoyed most about the Ionic is the adaptive cruise & regen paddles. It is a very well put together car. Unfortunately I have to disagree with your wife's comments on the interior. It feels more premium than my Leaf Tekna. I priced on the ionic up on a three year PCP. I was quoted £1500 deposit and £359 per month. And for that reason I'm sticking with the leaf for now. Great review of the car by the way. Reviewing EV's I have been doing on a personal level with friends. Also I am toying with the idea of creating my own RU-vid channel. I used to vlog all my motorcycle adventures which was very enjoyable. Sadly I no longer own a motorcycle. 😢
mark snoopyakabigbird sound like we have had the same experiences. Ultimately the cost is still too night for me to change. I'll have to check out your motorcycle vlogs. I too used to ride bikes until kids came along!
Hopefully the 2018 Leaf review will be sooner rather than later. The local dealer are ready tpo call me when it arrives and I have had a kind offer from a subscriber who has already ordered one and is expecting it soon.
We've been ready to dip a toe for an EV for a while now. We just missed out on e-Niro as the old model seems to be largely unavailable in the UK just now as we await the newer model. Went for a Kona but the dealer was a bit of a knob and we decided not to give him our business. We've been looking for other "local" Hyundai dealers but also perhaps the newer Ionic with the bigger battery will be sufficient for us. We'll have to test drive both a Kona and an Ionic and see.
Loved the honesty in the review, do you normally charge it every night from the house mains, leaving it plugged in until morning? And how much roughly does it cost for a months worth of charging? And do you ever get 'range anxiety' as in worry if you'll not make it? In the winter how much does the efficiency go down when you need the window blowers on and use the heaters / heated seats?
@ EV Opinion What do you think about the next gen Leaf and do you think you’ll be buying that? I would think you would go for the Bolt if that was available but I don’t think it is in England.
Matt Barnes I would love to try the Bolt but the new Leaf is looking favourite her at the moment. I haven’t seen it yet but an a little disappointed it isn’t more of a new generation. It seems to be a face lift with some extra gadgets. That said I will definitely be at the front of the queue for a test drive👍
This is the most cost-efficient electric car so far. In America, it costs $29.5K. After the $7.5 federal tax rebate, it costs just $22K, making it a real ECONOMY car. With the much lower price of electricity than gasoline, it's definitely a Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla killer. However, it's range is only 124 miles.
The charge plug actually clips nicely onto the charge door. I guess it's not immediately apparent how, which is Hyundai's fault, but once you know how it fits on, it sits there nicely.

+David Fox Basically it came down to cost. I didn't say anything in the review as it will obviously change but I have just spoken about it in the next vlog that I'm editing. Basically there are no deals and it is substantially more expensive that the Leaf. Add that to the waiting list and a possible bigger battery next year and I wasn't convinced. I still think it's a cracking car though👍

Wow! I love that red and I think I like that car better than the other two I’m looking at! My local dealers don’t carry EVs because how far away each city is and how cold it gets. I have to go out of state to even look at one.

Hi Have you any idea as to how big the boot is? I used to have a 2007 Honda Jazz (480 litres) but changed it for a Toyota Auris Hybrid as I thought it's boot was bigger (websites said 502) but it turns out that that is to the roof (360 litres to the cover, therefore smaller). Great video and I hope to get an Ioniq as my first EV.
Steve Lamb I’m sure you would be very happy to own an Ioniq as tour first EV. It’s a lovely car. I cannot remember exactly the size of the boot but it was reasonable. I seem to remember a bit of space was lost for the batteries when compared to the ICE Ioniq.
Not sure if you figured it out (still watching), but the auto-steering has several settings - just beeping, only steering if you're about to go off the lane, and active steering (it'll stay within the lane even when it doesn't think you're drifting out). We drove from Ellesmere Port to Stoke on the motorway with it pretty much steering and driving (assisted cruise control) the whole way. Was super-relaxing! Unfortunately the lead times on this car are now 8-10 months (Hyundai blame battery supply issues), so I'm just about to order an e-Golf instead :/
Oh, btw - we did about 150 miles with it mostly motorway (though there was a large patch of 50mph roadworks). It's by far the most efficient EV we tested, which not only makes the range great for the battery size, but also means for every minute of charging, you're adding more miles to the range compared to others (assuming equal charge rates) :-)
+Danny Tuppeny I didn’t realise you had so much control. I was really impressed with the assisted cruise control as it was. My only observation was that it tends to sit very close to the near side line. I would have felt more comfortable if it sat centrally in the lane. Is that something that can be adjusted?
Not that I know of, but if you only had it on the setting that corrects when it's going out of the lane, possibly it wasn't trying to centre? We set it to the Active mode and didn't notice anything like that - seemed to be centered. My biggest problem was that it just quietly looses the white lines (the green light on the dash goes white?) all the time, so you have to be pretty alert the entire time anyway. It needs to get better at detecting, and then give you some warning when it loses them (though I appreciate it's not really meant to be autonomous driving at this point!).
Yeah; we were pretty much ready to place orders. We actually have 8 months to go (their current estimates), but since there were some people excepting them in Feb that haven't had them, I don't really trust their estimates! Some info on the lane-keep-assist settings (a copy of the manual) is here: www.ioniqforum.com/forum/29377-post33.html The quotes we've had to lease an e-Golf basically work out the same as the best IONIQ quotes, so it hasn't worked out too bad; there are a couple of things I prefer in the e-Golf anyway (like auto-hold doesn't turn itself off every time you return to the car!!).
Nick ramsdale I have driven car for now 20 years and I never had complete puncture. I drive/year about 45 tkm. So no urgent need for spare tire. edit: There is also tyre pressure indicators in Ioniq wheels.
Nick ramsdale quite a lot of new cars on the road now do you not have a spare. They usually just get a puncher repair kit i.e. the tyre gunk and a compressor
Salil Sawarim I thought all cars carried a spare, you live and learn. I have had a tyre blow out on me years ago on the motorway and shredded it completely, but I guess the space saving makes sense, when I think that it had only happened once to me in 30 plus years of driving.
Your results on the motorway beat mine mine, I think I was averaging 4.1 miles per kw most of the time lev 2 regen , I think I got 1 for 1 on the fast flow in sports , not exactly a great day testing my end as I had heavy rain but, did you find being slightly skinny tires for the weight loosed traction on the quick pull away in sports. The scratchy plastics need improving in my opinion one thing to note at the Rapids I noticed it auto offed at 80% the seats a little uncomfortable on the run e.g lumber etc, also how did you get on with the Prius style view? I found I relied a lot on the rear view camera when parking in the supermarket. To me it felt like a mk 1.5 Kia Soul ev with a few trimmings ?
+ram64man I did find the tyres let go when driving hard on a twisty B road but that said it felt more stable and planted than my Leaf. I agree with the rear view, it's really hard to see out the back.
+ram64man I drive a Tesla Model S and the rear view is also poor. As a consequence I leave the rear view camera on at all times so I can use it like a third mirror. Can you leave the Ioniq's camera on all the time the car is in use or is it like the new Hyundai i30 where it only displays in reverse, never when in a forward gear ?
+Dogphlap I didn't see a setting to do that. I can turn the rear view camera on in the Leaf but as soon as you go over about 5mph it automatically turns off.
Dogphlap I didn't see one unfortunately, you can turn on the camera manually in drive and it gave a side or nose camera below 10 mph like the leaf but it doesn't stay on
I note you said you had to charge it, the thing is why can't you charge that at a Tesla super charger? Teslas can charge at any place they want so why can't you charge that the same?
Which is down right out of order, because that means they have an unfair advantage over other manufacturers cos if there is only enough room for X amount of chargers and Tesla chargers are in place that means no other make of car would be able to charge. All Tesla chargers should have a pay to charge system for non Tesla cars else they shouldn't be allowed to put in their chargers. They are the only company that refuses other vehicle makers the ability to charge their vehicles at their chargers. I understand that Tesla cars are a bit special but that is no reason to allow them to monopolise on charging space. What if Nissan decided to start putting in charge stations would it be ok for them to only allow Nissan cars, of course it wouldn't be ok and it wouldn't be acceptable.
+Christopher Webb unfortunately they won’t at the moment. Elon Musk has invited other manufacturers to invest in his infrastructure but I’m guess there are many political layers to consider!
+flitsies I’m on the fence with this. Tesla have been bold and made the investment in a infrastructure that allows EVs to travel Europe etc. Nobody helped with paying for that and it was a big gamble. Ecotricity did the same on a smaller scale in the UK. Elon Musk has said he is willing to open up his infrastructure to other manufacturers it to date nobody has taken him up on it. Instead groups like Nissan / Renault are developing their own. Ultimately there needs to be some intervention and common practices put in place for charging standards and payments.
I like your response it shows that Tesla are in fact thinking ahead if that is what they are truly saying. However let's say you are someone looking to buy an electric car but due to the cost even though you would love to own a Tesla you simply can't afford one, but hold on you can afford to buy a cheap secondhand Nissan Leaf the range isn't great but in time you will be able to afford to change the battery, the only problem is you can't charge it up due to the lack of charging space what would you do, buy an electric car with an eye on the not too distant future or just give up and buy a diesel cos you know you will be able to refuel it anywhere they sell the fuel. I'm not saying Tesla should offer up their chargers for free, not at all, what I am saying is that in order to progress their dream of everyone driving electric they help out the less well off by allowing the people who can't afford that wonderful product called Tesla to not get stranded by providing them the ability to charge for a fee, even if that fee is double or treble the price they charge their own cars to juice up. After all think about it, if you could only gas up your petrol car at Shell and no one else would you buy that car knowing the only petrol stations near you were BP? No you wouldn't you would buy a product that you could refuel anywhere and if the only other vehicle able to do that was way out of your reach in the fuel type you want to change to, you would go for the alternative which would be the most polluting regular vehicle due to your financial position if you see what I mean. As I said if you can't afford a Tesla and the only other car is a Nissan Leaf but you can't recharge it, then you will go for a gasoline car pure and simple, so Tesla are pretty much holding up their own dream by not allowing other EVs to charge on their system. Remember Tesla is a business as such could make money off vehicles made by other manufacturers simply by providing them the ability to charge for a fee, thus helping along their dream and helping poorer EV owners the chance to experience the ability to take their EV anywhere a gasoline car could go, without it many people will just keep on buying gasoline and diesel vehicles cos that's all they can practically make use of. Also Nissan Leaf's secondhand can be purchased as low as £5000 pounds, no Tesla's at that price, so it's not like the people who would buy such a vehicle would have the option to buy a Tesla is it.
Hello sir. I have the Hyundai Ioniq. you was talking in the video that you drove not really EV efficient. Can you tell me a bit how you can drive EV efficient?? I come from a diesel car, that was rated 3,9l/100km(62 miles) and if i drove it with summer tires, i always could keep it att around 3,2l/100km. official the car needs to be able to do 280km(173 miles) on one charge. but i can only get around 200km (125 miles) on one charge when it is around 15 degrees. 2 weekends ago it was only 3 degrees here, and my range dropped already to 150-160km (95mile). I already start to worry if i can reach work, and come home again (75 miles) when winter falls and we gets around -30 degrees :( So, now i am looking for all advice i can get, do drive as efficient as possible. without having to freeze in my car in winter :) Thanks for the help! Telhmaaa my comments about driving efficiently were to do with using cruise control. Basically if you didn't have it on you would do things like use downhill sections to build up speed before going up hill and gently accelerate etc. Cruise control doesn't think like you so will slow down going down hill before using more power to keep up to speed going up hill. I hope that makes sense? To learn some tips and hints about how to get the most mileage out of your battery just search RU-vid. There are loads of videos giving advice. 👍
Hi Telhmaaa , I am not sure of your driving style , but when I picked my car in March 2017 , the outside temperature was 7 degrees celcius . Fully charged guessometer reading 124 miles . It was my drive owning the vehicle , 71.4 miles south back to London and had 68 miles remaining when I arrived home . 6 months later , I have learned the sweet spots , and true range for motorway driving . However , when I fully charge at home the guessometer gives me 152 predicted miles which it will honestly achieve , as long as you don't drive like you stole the car on most journeys . My economic history shows I average between 5.1 - 6.9 miles / Kwh . BTW I am not hypermiling , otherwise my range would be over 200 miles .
+George Hanson that's really good. Obviously I only had it for 24 hrs and as I said I used cruise control at 70mph, which is really inefficient. I was still impressed with the range and if I owned it would expect to achieve much more. I'm. It sure I could get to your level but if I could it would be amazing!
+EV Opinion , we all learn the tricks of the trade (without Hypermiling) the regen paddles really are a revelation . My missus really thought I was crazy watching me drive the car (i.e feathering the brake when on zero regen) anticipation is key most of the time and clearly not driving like a looney in a built up residential area . Hi All, i have just looked on Glyn Hopkins website and a New Leaf is nearly £30k, thats way above what i want to pay, a s/h one is nearly 20k now, they seemed to have doubled in price in about 2 years...a few years about s/h was 7 to 10k and new was 17k...things changed a bit....somebody making a lot of money somewhere....Fred. I know when I asked in Stockport in May 2017, I was told they wouldn't even have one in for test-drive until Jan 2018 and it would be after that before I'd get my hands on it. I'm in a 2nd hand 2015 Leaf now which works for me. It's on a 3 year PCP after which (2020) I think the market will be really interesting in terms of the options and the ranges. What is the position with the battery ownership with the Ioniq? I know that Renault insist on a battery lease regardless of the 'ownership' of the car (PCP or owned) whereas Nissan seem to offer both options?
Renault does no longer require that you lease the battery. It changed early 2017 with the launch of the ZOE Z.E. 40, according to press.renault.co.uk/ElectricVehicles/2fb2029a-d440-43d8-88da-eb7bf23f706a.aspx
What happened to the price? I thought I saw low £20000s, now the cheapest is £30000. One review described the Ioniq as "expensive". Are all EVs becoming more and more pricey? This is not going to encourage people to buy.
Do you actually have the exact price of a Model 3 and the exact spec of a base model . The reason why I ask is all I have had so far is ballparks and vague guesswork , Please tell me half a million customers have not left a deposit on a car without being given an exact OTR price and exact spec .
Yes, but if you place your reservation right now, you'll be getting your Model 3 sometime in Q3 next year, and that's if you live in North America. For Europe it might be even longer. For right hand drive versions it was 2019 I believe. So if you want a Model 3 you're up for quite the wait.
FifthGear - Worth the wait though. I would have had a Bolt for that magical 200 mile real life range, but with GM offloading Vauxhall Opel to Peugeot, we can't have one in Blighty. The long range leaf pencilled in for next year is tempting, but for me, the 150 mile leaf is not enough of a step up from the current leaf. I reckon the Model 3 will be £35k. What little we gain on exchange rates will be swallowed by importation. Realistic 220 miles on the base car will do nicely and will be cheaper than the long range Leaf.
Question: When selecting either type of regen, lifting the right foot slightly, does the accelerator have a dead band where it still coasts before regen kicks in or is it always either drive or regen??
Tore Lund if you have regen engaged there is no coasting as such. You change your driving style to adjust the drive / regen via the accelerator. Press the accelerator down and it goes forward (obviously!) lift off and it slows using regen and gets more pronounced the more you lift.

I have driven a few different EVs and I always got the best range when using regen at high speed, but otherwise keeping as much low speed as possible, i.e. keeping momentum up to red lights so I do very few complete stops. This is a decision by Hyundai to make it feel like an automatic, but I prefer to have complete control. of when to apply what.
rhuisjes02 not like a Tesla but I can connect to the car via an app to check the battery state and turn on the heating etc. I can also plan a route and send it to the cars sat nav. Hope that clarifies it?
Josiana G. Cars like the i3 and original Leaf defiantly divide Opinion on their looks. The Ioniq was a lovely car to drive but I would recommend a test in the new Leaf before you make a decision. EVs are like mobile phones at the moment. The technology is moving on so rapidly!

£1.40 - £8.40 See below for details Let's say you have one of those cheap off peak tariffs with 5p/kWh over night. The battery is 28kWh in capacity so that's 5p x 28 = £1.40. On the other end of the scale let's say you're charging at an Ecotricity rapid charger and you're not an Ecotricity customer, the rate is 30 p/kWh. 30 x 28 = £8.40
EV Opinion I own a Inoiq EV. 4500 miles so far. Absolutely love the car. I agree the rearview isn't that great, but I'm used to it now. I get 135 miles on the guage, but my driving says 5 miles per kWh. Charger at work - no brainer :)
If you like that, I am sure the new leaf will blow you away. I agree with your wife. I think the ioniqis too plasticky for such an expensive car. And it is an expensive car.
+ddlovetts , I purchased my Premium SE Ioniq (Dec 2016) Pre-Reg demo , with 2800 mls on the clock for £19k , although I had to wait until March 2017 before dealer would deliver as they had to wait for next demo to be delivered .

A little confused. I thought the Ionique was mare efficient than any other electric in its price range. But at 5 Kwhr per mile or more, the Bolt seems to be more efficient at 4.2 Kwhr per mile.
@David Drake, the other way around, 5 miles per 1 kWh (Ioniq) vs. 4 miles per 1 kWh (Bolt). The Ioniq is 25% more efficient than the Bolt. The difference becomes even larger at speeds above 60 mph.
