In this video, I do detailed analysis of the 243 vs 223 Remington and which one you should be using in your rifle.
I think most hunters would agree that the 223 Remington and 243 Winchester both fantastic cartridges for hunting a variety of game. However, while there is a lot of overlap in their capabilities, there are some significant differences between the 243 vs 223 cartridges you should be aware of.
Unfortunately, it’s often hard to separate fact from fiction or to determine the true capabilities of a cartridge these days. As you’ll learn here shortly, both cartridges are best suited for different tasks, but can be adapted to other uses to a certain degree by switching bullet weights and types.
In this episode, I’m investigate the 243 vs 223 debate in detail and provide some insight into which cartridge is better suited for various situations so you can make an informed decision on which one will work best for you.

I like the 223 its not hard to bring down a roo here in Australia and most farmers like the 223 as it is similar to the 222 that they and there dads had on the farm and its not a cannon as they put it, also great for crows foxes rabbits and doesn't blow them to bits with a good shoot and a lot cheaper than the 243 here 🙂

As I sit here listening to your video, I am staring at both of the rifles, a Mossberg MVP 5.56 and a Remington model 788 in .243. I am fortunate enough to own both calibers. My first center-fire rifle 52 years ago was a Remington 788 in .243 Winchester which I used for serious groundhog hunting; with the occasional coyote and deer 🦌 thrown in. I got it through my local gun/conservation club, and paid a grand total of $105.00 for it with 2 boxes of 80 grain ammo, a scope and leather sling and an extra magazine. The Mossberg cost about $425.00 without a scope. I love them both. In Ind, deer rifles must be .243 caliber or larger and can only be used on private property. I find myself using the 5.56 to shoot paper and steel at my local range, the 788 is a '70s-era rifle that is unfired that I acquired on a computer gun site. Haven’t had the heart to break its cherry yet, soon I think.😂

My bro sniped a coyote at 400 yards with his 243 and 100 grain bullets. The coyote had his arm blown off from his shoulder on the exit side. Remington rifle still kick ass

I own(ed) both however I have just traded the 243 in for the 6.5 Creedmoor last week. the 223 is fantastic for varmint and the 243, now the Creedmoor, for the bigger game (and varmint). Did not shoot the Creedmoor yet because it takes some weeks to get the rifle on the permit.

What a great video explanation for a soon to be first time rifle owner since I’m not really a hunter I am looking at at a tikka t3x super varmint in 223 good choice? Any recommendations on a good scope for that gun mostly range shooting and occasional some ground hog out to 100 yards…. But if opportunities allow and I find a place would like to range shoot to 200 to 400 yard but that is highly unlikely. Just subscribed and look forward to watching your other videos

I have both and if I had to choose only one I would go with the .243 win it does every thing just a little bit better and at this stage the cost difference is almost nothing and not enough to matter. If the .243 is used with a brake or a suppressor it has virtually no recoil

I agree with you John. On all accounts and I like your outspokenness on hunting ethics. We want to be respectful of our big game and ensure the animals humane and quick recovery. There's just no point using the 223 on deer and antelope sized animals. In my view they're better suited for plinking and vermin hunting. But you picked a comparison of two really great and purposeful rounds. Thank you as always

Honestly, instead of going 6mm Creedmoor it would be awesome to just give the 243 a 30 degree shoulder, 1 caliber neck but keep the OAL the same, and get a SLIGHTLY higher twist so it can stabilize 108 gr bullets, and run the entire range of 243 bullets up to and including the 6mm arc bullets. Youd get more velocity than a 6mm Creedmoor and still get a big boost in efficiency from the modern ARC bullets, and the improved shoulder would help keep case consistency and burn at a higher level of quality.

For what application?
@cassidybronson6891
@cassidybronson6891 5 месяцев назад
That’s subjective, yes it has 60% more kinetic energy but it has 67% more felt recoil. If this is an acceptable result to you then yes it is. If not then the 223 is superior for applications.

If I have a henry golden boy in 22 mag is the 223 pretty close to the sane thing? I wanna get the henry ling ranger but I'm stuck on which caliber. I wish it did 270 or 3006
@Thebiggamehuntingblog
@Thebiggamehuntingblog Год назад
No, the 223 Remington is a BIG step up in power over the 22 Mag. What are you trying to hunt with your Henry Long Ranger? The 243, 6.5 Creedmoor, and 308 will all work just fine for deer.

Can you do a comparison between 6.5x55 6.5creedmore I would love to own a 6.5x55 just to keep the caliber going it looks to me they are trying to faze out a lot of calibers over time a lot easier to make a few than 50 different calibers

The 223 technically has the 243 beat in terms of muzzle velocity, because the fastest 243 round is a 58 grain bullet at 3,925 ft/s. The fastest 223 round is a 35 grain bullet a 4,000 ft/s, not much of a difference though.

I will take the 500+ extra foot pound from the 243

Then add wind at 300 plus yards and see where the difference is especially on that light of a bullet
