A key is something that you may use every day, but you might not have put much thought into how and why it works. Understanding how locks work is an interesting concept to start to learn and it is interesting to see how the components come together to keep you secure. This video will demonstrate what the inside of a lock looks like when the correct key is inserted, the different components of a pin and tumbler lock, and how they all work together to make a functioning lock.

HelpfulLockPicker Their loss. You teach better because you are newer to picking. They sometimes assume we beginners know what they are doing inside the locks even though we haven’t a clue sometimes. Stay simple, go slow and we can keep up and learn more. 👍

i love cutaway locks, i am curiouse how companies like master lock makes thousands of these everyday and do the bitting on the non KA line at the factory? the KD locks are probably KA but in smaller numbers? what are your thoughts on this?

How would you open a door lock or a padlock in an emergency situation?
@katep.1465
@katep.1465 2 года назад
A stupid question I hope someone answers. So when using the key, all pins line up because of it. But if we use a lockpick, how do driver pins stay up? We can't apply pressure on all pins at once, and they should be pushed down by the springs, no?
@HelpfulLockPicker
@HelpfulLockPicker 2 года назад
The holes over plug and Bible don't align perfectly and this variation in the tolerances causes one pin to bind under tension. In theory a perfect tolerance lock can't be picked

When theres no key in the lock are the key pins suspended or do they rest on the bottom of the chamber? Or are the pins or the holes tapered to hold them in? Edit… i see theyre suspended, but what holds them up like that?
@HelpfulLockPicker
@HelpfulLockPicker 2 года назад
Their diameter holds them from falling through completely

A very nice explanation and demonstration but if it you talked a bit slower it would sound more natural and comfortable to listen to. It seems a bit too rushed compared to your usual speed of talking on the rest of your videos as it sounded like you only slightly paused talking when you needed to breath. That is just my first impression when I watched it but I love it anyway. :0)

HelpfulLockPicker I’m glad you understand what I meant didn’t take my comments the wrong way as actual criticism in any way and I am so glad you made the effort to make and edit the video for everybody. :0) I find that if you are trying to learn something new you don’t understand fully or at all, you sometimes need a second or to for the information to sink in and be understood and then remembered before the next part is explained as it can be information overload to some people when things are explained in detail fast as it doesn’t get understood or remembered as easily. :0) An extra half a second slower sometimes makes all the difference in being understood easily by people not familiar with what your talking about. :0) Getting the balance of the pace speed needed for talking when explaining is sometimes difficult to judge depending on who videos are aimed at, the people that know most of it already or all of it can cope with faster explanations instead of the slower explanations for newbies. :0) Your usual video explanations have just the right pace of speed of talking with the correct pauses in the correct places to be understood by all experience levels including newbies I find and have learned so many new things from your videos I didn’t know. :0)

@adrn25m

HelpfulLockPicker I’m glad I could give you some constructive feedback. :0) I know that when I learn new things it has to be at a slow enough pace for me to understand and remember as well as explained easily and I sometimes have to either re read a chapter again to understand it better or if it’s a video, either rewind or watch it again if it is something I do not fully understand, so I am sure there must be other people like that also, especially if English is not their main language. :0)

What is preventing someone from using a very strong key shaped metal bar and a lot of torque to break the pins and make the cylinder turn?
