24fps vs 23.976fps | FRAME RATE dilemma for filmmakers
Here I discuss the frame rates of a cinema and how 24fps, which became a norm for this medium and why is it necessary?
What are the efforts that have been put on it by engineering minds to maintain the effect of 24fps for a long time, for the audience? Sometimes 24fps is used in the form of 23.976fps and how the confusion puts artists into a dilemma and how to come out of it and choose the appropriate frame rate for their project.

he's not all correct. simply put. after the war millions of GIs bought MUNTZ TVs tha wouldn't work when color tv started Broadcasting color signal so the had to trick the bw tv's into believing what they seeing was a bw signal. that's it. in 2000 all this Fractionalizd bullshit could have been killed but stupid hollywood liberals thought that it was video law and to this day walk by any 150,000 dollar camera and you'll see 23.976 and if you ask one of those Geniuses "why you shooting 23.976" they always say "you have to, it's video" in fact it's really not even video, it's "VLIM", NOT VIDEO OR FILM. at least thats what ive been calling it for the past 20 years.

Clearest explanation I’ve come across, thank you. Still stuck though, can you help me out? 1. If NTSC ran into problems with colour and slowed down 30 to 29.976, and 24 to 23.976, why didn’t PAL do the same for 25? 2. Can you explain more about DVB-T, ATSC, ISDB-T, DTMB? So can they all display true 24 and 60 fps? What about 25 fps in PAL regions? Do PAL and NTSC regions still exist? 3. So, what is the point of my camera shooting 23.976? Why don’t we all shoot 24, and let NTSC TV slow down the playback at 0.1%? Alternatively, why not just shoot true 24 because all modern TVs can display it anyway? Is it something to do with the electronics in the camera? 4. You say delivering at 24 is obviously for DCP projection at digital theatres. So do you mean that if I shoot and deliver at 23.976, it won’t project properly? Why don’t we all shoot and deliver true 24 if TVs can display it anyway? Why is there still this issue with 24, 25, 30 fps, depending on NTSC/PAL regions of 50/60Hz? 5. So what happens if I shoot 23.976 and deliver at 24? Will there be duplicated frames? Or does it become shorter in length? Vice versa, what if I shoot true 24 and deliver at 23.976? Are there skipped frames? Or does it become longer? Likewise, what about compatibility with 25 fps? Say, if 23.976 or 24 was to be broadcast in PAL regions, which you mention have been replaced? I’m asking all this because after watching your video, I still don’t know to shoot true 24 or 23.976, or 25 for that matter. Nor what format to deliver in and if it matters at all.
@CinemaResonatesLife
@CinemaResonatesLife 3 года назад
See, NTSC and PAL format are strictly for broadcasting. If you are exporting a film or any kind of video which you are about to send to a client in another country, for OTT platform or for RU-vid, you need not to worry about the frame rate. It will run just fine. Select the frame rate according to the aesthetic value it gives. For ex. 24fps for Cinema. Thanks for asking all of those questions. I hope my answer helps 🤗

A great deal of effort has been put on it by engineering minds, and since it has been arduously carried on by filmmakers, to linger your experience to a great extent of time, to help you contemplate. Which makes you a more sensible living being and you resonate more with lift itself. “The allotted function of art is not, as is often assumed, to put across ideas, to propagate thoughts, to serve as an example. The aim of art is to prepare a person for death, to plough and harrow his soul, rendering it capable of turning to good.” ― Andrei Tarkovsky Great Topic there.

8:36 Can anyone confirm if I understood correctly. So there is a video of 2 hour 7.2 second (7202.2 seconds in total) length at 23.976 FPS. It means that (A) this video consists of 172,800 frames (= 7207.2 seconds / 1.001 seconds * 24 frames), (B) it's supposed to play 24 frames for 1.001 seconds and (C) this video will play for 2 hours and 7.2 seconds on an over-the-air television. But if you play the same video file at a theater through DCP, DCP will regard it as 24 FPS and will play 24 frames for 1 second. So this 2 hour 7.2 second long video will be played for only 2 hours at a theater through DCP (so 7.2 seconds less) because 172,800 frames / 24 frames = 7200 seconds.

You should avoid both frame frames. Both frame rates belongs to last century. 24fps is a must NO and 23.98 it could pass cause you can easily convert to 30 and 60. But avoid both frame rates at all costs. Those frame rates are unicorn, don’t exist in today’s monitors and displays and will cause you many problems.

@@CinemaResonatesLife Thanks for the link. But I understand extremely well frame rates. I am the first in the world to deliver Blu-ray video quality over the internet back in 2006 with my encoding software. 24fps needs to be removed from all camera from now and so on. Period. It just makes any video horrible to watch. Also, it is a horrible frame rate for creating interactive videos. Too many horrible things about this frame rate. I used to work with film and digital to deliver commercials for movie theaters and broadcasting stations, 24fps always where a nightmare. Again! PLEASE STOP USING 24FPS, IT DOES NOT EXIST ON TODAY'S MONITORS OR DISPLAYS. PERIOD! IT BELONGS TO CINEMAS. THE LINK YOU PROVIDED PLAYS HORRIBLE BECAUSE IT IS 24FPS. Same goes to people that ask pictures with DPI, DPI does not exists on computer screens. Always ask for resolution/video size and never DPI. Same as video, 24fps does not exist. Computers will create the missing frames to match the hertz. By doing that, every computer and displays will playback a 24fps horribly. People that are near sighted and people that has epilepsy should avoid watching videos on monitors at 24fps. We can see the horrible strobes when playing back. Create the cine look in POST and render the footage at the country's hertz.

thank you, awesome. how to convert 23.976fps edited footage to 24fps. without audio drift?
@CinemaResonatesLife
@CinemaResonatesLife 4 года назад
The audio sampling frequency for your audio is normally unaffected by video frame rate. Audio has a sample rate, measured in kilohertz. Standard audio for video is recorded at 48 khz. This does not change with framerate; audio will always be the same, whether you're shooting or converting footage from 23.976 to or 24 fps. Unless you are filming hours and hours of footage, then you will have a lag of 7.2 seconds every 2 hours of a video. If you are still facing problem try fixing your digital recoder, it might be due to some difference in the electronics or else try fixing it in Audition.

If you are planning to release your movie or show in cinema halls then it's better to master in 24fps then conform into 23.976 for WEB or TV release. Here as you've already mastered in 23.976 it can be carried in a DCP but if you still want to conform into 24fps, change the sequence settings in your editing software. You simply create the sequence the way you want it to be and drop your footage on it. When asked if you want to change the sequence settings to match the video, tell it "no". The video will play at the normal speed. If you want some specific portion to be in slow motion then import the footage again through Interpret Footage>Frame Rate and then do crop & insert the specific portion on top of the earlier import that I mentioned above. Hope it helps😊
