Years ago, I worked in a call center doing customer service for Sears. At the stores, customers would often get talked into buying "extended warranties". When a customer would call in to get a replacement part, unless they told us that they had an extended warranty (which we automatically saw when pulling up the customer's acct.") we were supposed to CHARGE them for the replacement part, even though it should be free under the warranty. I could never, in good conscience, do this. (I was always getting in trouble for ordering the replacement parts under the warranty even when the customer didn't say they had one.) Fortunately, I was able to get a better job. On a different note: non-profit schools also rip students off with all the different "fees" they tack onto the tuition. If you call the registrar's office and ask what exactly those fees are for, 9 times out of 10, they can't (or won't) tell you. Why should you have to pay a "recreation fee" if you don't live on campus and don't use the campus rec center?

Schools aren't legally allowed to charge kids anything or make them pay for anything (Unless it's for like an optional field trip or you broke something)

Trollerman Sixtysevan Yet they do. My daughter has attended several universities, and community colleges...all of which charge these fees. She argued that she didn't live on campus, etc. and shouldn't have to pay the fees. They said they charge everyone those fees. Lab fees, yearbook fees, etc. charged to every student.
@TrollermanSixtysevan

jamjam731 Well most colleges and universities are non profit and all the money given towards them will hopefully be used for the benefits of the future and providing more than enough funding to ensure project don't become underfunded

If you're not selling a lot of extended warranties, you won't last long at Sears.

I did customer service too, for HBC's credit cards & Fido mobile service (two reputable companies in Canada) and it was the same thing. Cr. card insurance fees charged monthly (I couldn't even, rationally, explain interest fees - because i tried! my colleagues usually evaded such topics) to unknowing customers, enticing the cellphone customer to a new phone (contract), new monthly plan... It went so much against my morals, I quit... couldn't do it knowing that that person on the line is just like me, struggling to pay their bills and make a living for themselves I probably was soft, too sympathetic and foolish because somebody else replaced me but I no longer wanted to be part of this BS

The reason american healthcare is so fucked up. Just do what we do here in Norway: Pay a little more in taxes to get an ethical and equal health care system. We have taxes based off of your yearly income that covers most basic public survices, like school from beginning to end of high school, to city and road maintance (although car users also pay an extra tax for roads and the ability to drive freely, and toll booths in larges cities), libraries, hospitals, homes for the elderly and sick, and money for the disabled or people who cannot work for one reason or other. And also for stipends for students in higher education. Medicines are also covered by the state if you need to stay on it for years. Like for me, I was on a special and rare allergy medicine that cost me 1200 dollars equivalent for one single dose, which I had to take every other month for a while. That was covered by the healthcare system. If not, I wouldn't have been able to pay for it. Yes, some well off healthy people claim the taxes are unfairly high, but they'll be happy about it should they ever get very ill and require a lot of expensive and time consuming treatment, or get on disability.

Generic drugs require at least 60% of original potency of the name brand according to the FDA. There are plenty of cases, including me, in which generics lack the potency of the name brand. When Lamictal went generic, I was automatically switched to it. I was seizure free for 9 years. When switched to lamotrigine (the generic) I had a seizure 4 weeks after starting the generic. Another 6 weeks later. And another 4 weeks later. My doctor and I successfully convinced the insurance to cover the name-brand for me. I am back on lamictal and have been seizure free for 5 years.
@kurooitami
@kurooitami 5 лет назад
I use Lamotrigin. But the doctors adjust the dosage and take extensive serum tests for the first few months to ensure the level in my blood is in the target area. Coincidentally iy wasn't, and I had some issues with incompatible meds there. But, they always take serum tests here for those kinds of meds, where the level in the blood vs the amount of meds can vary drastically from person to person, and body weight and gender has a lot of say in that. That is what they should have done for you. You may have just needed to up the dosage on the generic one, something which could be easily confirmed with a simple blood test. Also, this is something that should have been done from the beginning and be monitored whenever you switch medication, even to generic brands, and when you start on additional meds. Thankfully they cover main brand meds here in Norway, if you can come with a reason as to needing that instead of generic ones. although you might have to pay a little of it yourself if not having a good enough reason. Reasons could be allergies to additives and such.

really? Go to a store, put on €100 jeans and walk around in it. Go to another store and put on €10 jeans and do the same, you'll feel and see a big difference. Obviously that's not the case with every brand but just because a brand is expensive doesn't mean it's a scam and the same quality as cheap brands.

Contract had hidden in the writing that I needed to be outside of 50 miles of the nearest gym to cancel or pay the full years account. I lived almost 70 miles from the nearest one. Even after that I got a hard time and then a couple of years later I started getting debt account companies trying to get me to pay the account. One was even a friggin company from Sweden. When my dad died and we went to pick out the casket we were shown the bronze clad, etc. with ridiculous price tags. At the end of the line was an oak casket at half the cost. Dad liked to do wood working so my 4 siblings and I discussed it and decided that he'd love that one. There wasn't much of an estate and it saved money that we didn't really have, and it was beautiful wood. I never did tell anyone that Dad liked pine better than oak. Dad was a pragmatist; I'm sure he approved. Too many people let emotion rule at such difficult times, and there are those who will take advantage of that.

when I bought my first car from a dealership I had done my research first. original price was 15k I reduced it to 11k. after I had already reduced the price the salesmen tried to 'downgrade' me to a lower cost car due to my credit score. the 'downgrade' was 600$ cheaper. they kept me there for an hr. so I left, returned the following day with a counter offer from another dealership for the same car (with higher mileage). once again they kept me there for an hr until they gave in and sold me the car. they didn't want to lose on 4k but they also were a new dealership and needed a clientele base and a bit word of mouth to pass around. the point is yes know what you are going for and don't give in. point out their flaws. it can be done.

Some other things you can do at a dealership: Always keep your car keys. That way they can't stop you from leaving. Also, have the salesman serve the numbers outside so that they are reminded that you have options, and can go somewhere else to buy a car.

Quick advice guys: whenever you're getting some kind of service done on anything you own, just take a few pictures of the individual at work. It scares the s*it out of them lol. Example: I was getting my brakes done & at first the guy was telling me that I needed new disc because of the noise it was making. So he lifted the car up & started working on it. I took some pics of my car just to post on my SM account and the guy looked nervous. Minutes later, he tells me that my brakes are okay. Just had a bit of dust. Doesn't charge me anything. I'm thinking that he probably thought I was doing undercover work or collecting evidence for an investigation.

It definitely falls under shady at least. Borderline (or full on) slave labor often times using children. All the diamonds go to the corporation. All money from the diamonds go to the corporation. Ever wonder how it can be possible that almost all diamonds in the world come from a few countries in Africa, yet those countries aren't rich and do not have high standards of living? Shady doesn't even apply. Shit like that is what makes other countries see corporate imperialism in western capitalism.

I once hired a lawyer to do something for me. He said "Ok but I want to meet you in person first, I like to get a feel for my clients before i take on a job. I will be catching a plane on Sat so you can just meet me at the airport and we can talk while I wait for my plane." Now the airport was 3 hours from my home and i worked Saturdays, but he said it was the best time to do it and I wouldnt be charged for an office visit or anything. So I lost a days pay (I have a profession and work for myself) and drove down there. When we got there we did Not talk about my case. Instead he asked my professional advice on some of HIS issues in my area of expertise. OK so i answered his questions and then he got on his plane and left. The next contact I received from him was, get this, A BILL. Yes a bill for like $300 for me meeting him at the airport and giving him my professional advice on his problem!!! I had to get a second lawyer to take on my case and to notify that ass wad that I would not be paying him. That was utter bull shit.

I got ripped off by a car dealership. I was a naive early 20-something year old. I was so focused on a monthly payment I could afford, so I didn't look at the total price. I didn't realize every time the salesman disappeared to "talk to the boss" all he was doing was extending the loan out another 6-12 months. I ended up paying more money in the end when I thought I was haggling their price down because I had to pay interest over a longer period of time.

Just a note. When you mentioned about the prices for wedding costs, it made me think that funerals are just as bad. I recently went to a flower shop and as soon as I mentioned funeral, they brought out 3 special books filled with arrangements. I purchased 2 and found the price of the arrangements to be about 3 times what they would normally cost because I later priced them out, same store, same arrangement, but this time did not mention funeral or anything. I was just using them as a gift. Different books, much less cost. Just sayin..

I nearly got screwed over by Midas twice. My trucks fuel injector went out and they told me it was $199.00 for the injector plus labor which was the same price. I stopped at my local O'Reilley's to see what it actually costs for the injector. $70.00 dollars. I fixed it myself in 30 minutes. Another time on a different vehicle I asked them to check the positive cable on the starter as it was difficult to get to. They claimed they did and said the starter was shot. $500 for the starter and same in labor. My dad and I decided to try to reach it, they positive cable was lose. We tightened it and I drive the car another year before selling it and never had another issue with it.

I'm a retired computer person and I fix my mostly elderly friend's PCs for free + cost of parts. It is amazing how easy it would be to rip off the elderly. Most were 50+ before PC's were even generally available and have very little knowledge about how they work and how to even make strong passwords or why that is needed. I wish there was an answer to this problem but I fear that 70+ people will just have to age out and hopefully not get ripped off too bad. To me, at 72 I wish some younger good people would come up with a fool-proof way to protect them from the thieves and black hats out there. It seems that there should be a way to create a system that can really be trusted. But the thieves make so much money at it that it looks impossible to plug all the holes. And the thieves get so rich that they can then buy the politicians who make the laws to protect the thieves who get richer and richer so they can buy more politicians. I think the problem will continue to grow until it explodes but even then the restart will be overrun with thieves who start the whole process over again. Sorry to depress you, if reading this did.

I recently had to replace my dishwasher, a Samsung. When I contacted Samsung for help with a leaking gasket on the 11 month old appliance they waited 2 weeks before sending a repairman. After the guy contacted Samsung's repair center, they denied the repair because the the gasket had gotten wet during use! WTF! Of course it got wet, it's inside the dishwasher! $900 wasted on a Samsung POS! Home Depot felt so badly that they manned up and sold me an American made GE and through in free installation. I'm keeping HD and GE but will NEVER by another product with Samsung on it. Samsung's customer service is the damn worst that could be imagined! That is my "ripped off" story, don't ever buy Samsung appliances!

It is what it is! I don't fret items breaking and such but when a company refuses to honor a warranty that is within the basic 1yr that is issued by making up a lame excuse like water touched the gasket... I should have remembered what Adam Smith said about the buyer! Samsung can keep their products from here on out, I'll stick with American companies so at least my money supports American workers.

Paul Simmons Watch out for anything made by GE as well. This includes Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana, Kitchen Aide, etc. I have a Whirlpool Gold refrigerator that was repaired twice in the first 7 yrs. Now at the ripe old age of 7 yrs it broke again. Guess what.....that part (a major part) is NO LONGER AVAILIBLE. $2000 wasted. GE's suggestion, they have a website that you can buy new, last year's model appliances at 1/2 price. NOT! Next time LG gets my money.

There's enough rip offs still out there to do another list. For example: 1. Payday loans. 2. Lawyers. 3. Ink and toner. 4. Large sodas or beverage prices in restaraunts. 5. Valve stem/ balancing fee for a tire. 6. Gift cards. Some charge a fee to use. 7. Buying tix to anythng and using Ticketmaster. They charge $7 + bux per ticket! 8. Shipping for Major Companies. Im taking major companies. They have an agreement with shipping companies to ship so much stuff for a lower cost, but pad the cost. 9. Game show winnings. When you win a car on a game show, you may not drive away with the same make and model and may have to travel a great distance to get it and then have to pay taxes on the model you supposedly won, but not the model you actually received. 10. Coffee shops sell you day old doughnuts for the same price as fresh baked. 11. Time Shares.

Because of the fact that most mechanics (not all) are lying thieves, I do most of all of my own automotive repairs. I went into a shop once to buy some new tires and the kid told me that I needed an entire front end rebuild! He showed me the said problem. I looked at him and told him that I'm not an idiot and know enough about cars that I could see that there was nothing wrong with my car. I took my business elsewhere.

Bank of America asked if we are interested in overdraft protection then issued a second credit card without telling us when the account was overdrawn. this happened three times that month and when I found out I paid for them in full but they continue to accumulate monthly charges even though I paid the $300 that first month they continue to charge us even though we paid off the original charges. the balance is now up to over $8,000 for interest, late fees, and yearly card membership dues & fees,! I have "DISPUTED" their claims online, in person, & in writing (by mail & via bank Dropbox) & by Claims Department on the telephone when I 1st Became aware we had 2 Visa credit cards was 8 months later after receiving two new cards in the mail with different numbers and a new higher balance. Never got any other monthly statements! When questioned why their response was that when they called me and said the bill was late I paid them $50 on the phone so I must have been aware of the second because I paid something on it. I thought this was for the other credit card account never being aware I had 2 credit card visas . still nothing has been resolved ! Nothing else (except their fees) had Ever been billed to this account. since that first month! Over ten years later Debt collectors occasionally try to contact me for Higher and Higher balances now approaching $9,000.

Golds Gym ripped me off big time! Back in 2007 I went to a local trade school to learn collision repair and during orientation there were local companies that came in offering discounts on thier services for students attending my school. Golds was one of them, and they offered a free trial 6 month membership. The way that the lady explained the membership was 100% misleading. She claimed that we could come to golds gym and work out for free for six months and then after the free trial was up if we wanted to continue to work out there we would have to become full members. I even asked her to clarify, "So after six months, if I don't make myself a full member, it's all over and the six months was still free right?" to which she replied yes. And reiterated that I would have to actually sign up for a brand new membership because in their system after six months the trial membership would void itself and it would be like I had never been there before. So I signed up, the semester started and the plan was to work out every day after my last shop class. On my 3rd day of school my car broke down so I had to start riding in to work with my mother. With her getting off work 30 mins after I would get out of school there was no time for me to work out so after 2 days I stopped going to Golds and didn't give it a second thought. Fast forward to 2012 and I get a letter from a collections agency attempting to recover $5000! that they claimed I owed golds gym on my dilenquent membership. when I attempted to contact golds gym, they had changed their name to Urban active fittnes and had no records of me or my account or the young lady who had come to my school and signed me up. I still haven't made any payments, and did not receive a tax refund this last tax season because of it.

Name brand and generic often are basically the same but in some cases, there are little differences that can majorly affect people. A good example is Adderall, for me, I have to have the name brand because the generic causes me to have moodswings and affects my sleep pattern horrifically. It's not a case of the name, I never knew my doctor gave me generic till the next med check and my mom pointed out that I was far more confrontational and over emotional, normally I am fairly level headed so it was a huge change. The reason was because the generic had slightly different ingredients that affected me more than it would someone else. So, please don't just say its a scam. Yes, generics are cheaper and both are fairly similar in ingredients but those small changes can impact how the medicine affects those who take it. I am saying this because I want people to be informed, this isn't meant to cause an argument. It is so that people who are taking medication that keeps them alive is the proper form be it Generic or Name Brand. If a small change in ingredients can cause a change in personality it could potentially cause worse issues depending on the medication.

On the college textbooks thing: I had one professor who wrote his own textbook specifically for the course (so it lined up completely perfectly with what he was teaching in the lectures, the assignments, and the final), and he self-published it as cheaply as he possibly could (it was spiral bound). Brand new it cost us only about $10 and he encouraged us to try to find it used to save us a little more money. For that and other reasons he was my favorite prof ever.

The worst part? People know they're being scammed. Instead of refusing to purchase these goods & services, they just continue to let themselves be suckered. @BunhieKleever

Orppranator It's just not about United beating their passengers, it's about companies screwing people over. People are still going to fly United and other airlines despite rising costs and stupid rules (like United refusing girls on a plane because they were wearing leggings). These companies abuse their power because they know that no matter what, their products will still be purchased. They'll just get worse because people are too lazy and complacent to actually stand up and do something. Something like not purchasing one iPhone 7 or United having a completely empty plane.

hep the great Clearly you are missing the point I'm trying to make. It's not just United, but most airlines and major companies that are taking advantage of people. However, people know they are being taken advantage of and do nothing about it because they are too lazy and complacent. Do you work for United or something, it seems thats the only thing that bothered you.
@hepthegreat4005
@hepthegreat4005 7 лет назад
nah, it's just the only thing that stuck out at me. I agree with your main thesis. But that particular point is very weak point. Airlines are completely within their rights to require their employees, even when off duty, at their place of work, to adhere to appropriate attire. Because what they wear is a reflection of that business, and if they happen to meet a customer who knows them off duty at work in inappropriate attire then it could cause that customer to think badly of that employee, and by extension that company. And I've seen some leggings that were see through etc. If they were that kind of leggings, then it was completely appropriate for their boss to tell them to change before allowing them to use their employee benefits. (which is what happened)

Yes my GF and I for a few years use to check how many times this would happen. She would take the cars in the morning "play the dumb chick act" (got dress nicely & sy things like thingy and weird noises) and get an estimate, then I would would go on the weekend and get another estimate and see how much lower I can get it. The sad part is that all of the estimates were at least one third less. Oh at the end I would usually do the work myself. We stopped as we got busier but still do once in a while just for fun. Yes it is absolutely true. The worst ahppen when the brakes on her car were worn and I replace the front pads one evening (without telling her) and she went to get an estimate and they quoted her over $800 to replace the front and back brakes even though the front pads were brand new (and the rear were less than 20% worn). When I ask her what did she tell them was wrong. She said nothing, she went with a coupon to have a free tire rotation and brake inspection. And in the receipt they put in recommended services: brake approaching dangerous levels and listed multiple services (pads, shoes, rotors, drums, bleeding, new master cylinder, and refurbishing the calipers and rear cylinders). I was actually surprised and mark that shop as avoid at all costs.

I've since slowed down how active I am in the company, not because it wasn't making me better and paying me an income, but I never really loved what I did and in this life, you should love what you're doing. #17, I worked 13 years as a Warrenty Administrator for an Auto Dealership, The Owner REFUSED to sell third party "warranties" (even with fantasic profits) because they rarely paid claims. There was always a loop-hole for denying claims. Basic Rule, INSURANCE will not pay if it can be avoided. This includes especially Health Care. "Medicare" is already paid for. Those "Advantage" Plans are not Medicare, they are FOR-PROFIT Health Insurance plans, they are "Affordable" regardless of what they claim. Like all insurance there is no "Advance" to them, they are Not Government Medicare. A president attempted to move people away from government care to Private Health Insurance through a misrepresented law called "Affordable Health Care". Remember ONE Thing, For-Profit Insurance does not make money giving away Care, You will pay dearly for anything you do get from them. #11, It is not uncommon for a professor to demand you Buy HIS/HER new edition text book, and NOT use it during the course.

Funny thing is everything is true here especially college books since most of the time they don't even use the text.
@jaystarr4174

The college says they will buy your books back after the semester, but every time I went to sell my books back , I was told, "sorry, but the instructor is using a different text this next semester." How much has really changed in anatomy, physiology, or math that these classes need a new book twice a year or so?

When picking a mechanic for your vehicle, I have had the best luck with owner operated shops, not big chains. My two favorites...Arnold's Muffler and Brakes in Norton, MA and Falmouth Motorcar in Falmouth, MA. Quick story about Arnold's. I had some work done on my truck by Arnold and his practice was to send you a bill after the work was complete. Got it a couple of days after the repair and put it in my briefcase and, like a total idiot, forgot about it. About a year later, I was cleaning out my briefcase as I had bought a new one, found the bill and realized I had not paid it. Immediately went to Arnold's, went into his office and told him what had happened, apologized profusely and asked if there were any late charges. He just smiled and said "Nope, the original amount is fine. I knew you would pay it eventually." Course, I guess it helped that my family had been doing business with him for 30 years at that point. Big business could learn from this, I think.

I, too, lucked out with my car mechanic. My grandfather, rest in peace, found a wonderful place called, Blue Star Brothers, on India St in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY. It is owned by brothers who are very honest (not just with me) and others. I have been having some car problems a few years back due to the car catching on fire. They never ripped me off but always found the right area where the problems originated. I lucked out big time.

Basically anything that deals with sales to customers. Example oil deals at auto part stores when Walmart has the same oil and filter for 60 percent less

I was at my local pharmacy and when I was paying, the clerk said: and a free chance to win 10,000 dollars. I said no, and magicaly, 1,30$ fell off the price! I wonder why...

What you get from Credit karma isn't your credit score, its an estimate of your credit score and is (at best) an educational tool... its written right on their ads! They haven't charged you anything because they are making money selling your info to advertising/ marketing companies.

When my fiancé bought my engagement ring it was a $40 ring off of amazon but I picked it out. I didn't want a diamond ring. I hate anything to do with diamond. I never saw the beauty in them. Plus I like the ring he got me. I like the style and it goes with all of my clothes.

Home repair: was getting bids for a new roof and the first company wanted $30,000 for a simple job saying they were going to do a whole new "roof system" but would drop it to 19k if I put signs up advertising their company. When I still refused they tried the whole 'let me call my boss' trick to "lower the price" to 17k. I went with someone else.

I agree brand name drugs/products are very over priced. Generic drugs do use the same active ingredient, but can have different fillers/binders. Some people react differently to these fillers/binders in ways that reduce the effect of the active ingredient.

That's accidental coverage. Extended warranties are a scam. I learned the hard way when I bought the wrong plan for my laptop. It literally just extended the manufacturer's warranty which rarely covers accidental damage.

We had to buy a furnace, and the company we hired gave us 6 months free credit to pay it off over time. But the payment schedule they gave us took longer. Once we passed the free 6 months, we got a bill for the back interest ($600). Fortunately we had been over-paying each time. When my wife asked what our payoff balance was, the operator who told us we owed $600 grudgingly admitted that we only owed $143. We paid it, saved $600, and learned a valuable lesson. Now you've learned it, too.

what about the truck stop ripoffs, 12 dollars for a shower!, 5 dollars for a load of laundry, being told that you would find a "good job", but left on the side of the lot. i have been told by numerous places that there is a serious shortage of truck drivers, but when lawyers and some drivers out there see the tractor-trailer as a free meal ticket, it makes some say no. i say lawyers, some drivers and truckstops as some of the biggest ripoffs in usa (don't know about canada or mexico, but possibly the same).
