Weatherby is putting out 257 Wby ammo with Hammer bullets. Check them out. Hammers give around 200 FPS faster than other bullets of the same weight. Impressive.

Gotta get the copper fouling out of it. 257 is stupid hot and it has to be cleaned up after about 20rds. Roy designed it for an 87gr boolot that you can't get anymore. Welcome to the 257 club.

When I was a kid, first learning to hunt. I was just presented with a box of ammo, and told to "Shoot this"! It wasn't until I started reading hunting & shooting magazines, that I learned how different ammo, all shoots differently! Just as this episode proves! "The more you know!" Thanks for all the hard work, and your ammo 🦉T🦉

My 257 wby vanguard loves the 110 grain Nosler Accubond. I have also had fantastic terminal performance from the Accubond on a variety of critters coyotes, pronghorn, hog, and Texas dall. I see Weatherby has replaced the Accubond with the ELDX. Good thing I have an extra box or two or four in my ammo supply.

I bought my vanguard 257 weatherby back in the late 70's or early 80s.First thing I did was free float the berrel with the cardboard from a marboro cigarette box.front stock screw lugs to peaches on each side.then back where the two screws hold the trigger assembly and the bolt to the stock.I shot 3/4 inch groups with both the 110 accubond and the tt-x-bullet the x- bullet was 100 grain.Or better if I did my part.3 inche high at 300 yards dead on at 400 yards 6 inches high at 500 yards.

Those TTSX’s are some great boo lots for the Weatherby cartridges! My buddy’s Vangard .257 loves them , as does the 165’s in my .300 Wby. Mark V. In both, sub-MOA all day, screaming velocities and tough bullets that hold together and penetrate like a much heavier weight. Cup and core boo lots can grenade at closer ranges at Wby. velocities. That’s a nice setup too. The scope is a bit much for hunting for me, but for long range steel it will work great. Have fun !

Thanks for more material on the Weatherby. That is one very sweet rig. Would be interesting to see speed data when doing groups. Will go a long way to explain any wayward shots. Also good to know if your rifle gives variable speeds with a cold bore or not? You are a darn good shot, no question. What can tighten groups when you shoot from behind a bipod is having a place to “anchor” the feet in order to pre-load the bipod, this can reduce the jump a lot. Maybe see if you can add an edge to the front of your shooting table. Thanks for another great presentation 👌🏻👌🏻

I talked to someone at Weatherby a few years ago, re a recommendation for an 'all rounder' cartridge for 257w, for short & longer ranges, medium-big game etc. and the 100tsx was noted. One of the advantages I think is penetration/blood trails etc, especially at shorter ranges where ELDX and Interlock bullets tend to have trouble staying together (3500fps! ) and for big game.

Been shooting a 257 wby for 20 + years. I love it and I admit to bias. I state that fully, but .5 Moa groups with full power loads should be easily achieved with this wonderful cartridge. 117 gr at 3350 fps, .5 to .75 moa [from good firing position] and a rifle / calibre combo that shoots well off hand is a dream combo in my book. Biased - yes. Hundreds of proven data points in the bank - yes. Wby mark 5. Macmillan stock. Scopes by meopta and zeiss. Testing conditions provided by Scotland.

My Vanguard likes the TTSX as well. One caveat since I'm not a huge proponent of barrel break in, but mine got more accurate with every boo-lat after shooting through about 60- 70 rounds with a thorough cleaning between each change of bullet.
@orr89rocz
@orr89rocz 9 месяцев назад
That basically is a break in, its not uncommon for barrels to speed up after 50-150 rounds. It can take some shots to smooth out and settle in.
@chadcaldwell8832
@chadcaldwell8832 9 месяцев назад
@orr89rocz I agree. I meant I don't make it a point to do a regimented break in. I just shoot and let the barrel settle in. I'm not doing a one shot then clean sort of break in on a schedule. I shoot 1 or two boxes and clean when I have the time or I see a big accuracy shift.

I did some experimenting.With some tuning forks when I was younger and the longer ones vibrated the longest and the shorter one didn't vibrate nearly as long and settled down to normal a lot quicker.This experiment lead to me.Beleiving that the same holds true for a shorter 22 inch berrel over the 26 inch berrel for the different types of hunting I do would be more practical for more accuracy from a free floated berrel that doesn't vibrate as long.And I could improve the accuracy for all shots and follow up shots and with certain bullets and powder.have the same power as the older 26 inch berreled 257 weatherbies.not shooting hammer bullets with a 1/ 10 twist rate on my 257 weatherby vanguard.

Im wondering if switching bullets is messing it up, and causing the other bullets to shoot poorly. Its especially suspect considering you shot the ttsx first. Here's the thing with groupings and actual hunting. What matters most is does your rifle put the first shot where you want it IF you do your part under field shooting conditions. You know who misses shots? Guys who only ever practice from a bench. That's not to say those guy miss most of their shots but I've seen more guys miss deer and elk who really never practice from anywhere other than the bench or a solid tree stand rest than any other type of hunter. When I was young after we sighted our rifles at the bench we'd practice shooting from various positions you might find in the field and there was a big difference in the ease or lack thereof in hitting the target when shooting from a field position. Also, every rifle I had access to that would put the first shot where I wanted it never failed to put the second shot where I wanted it even if bench rest results suggest that shouldn't be the case. Why? Well, an accurate first shot usually ensures the animal doesn't go very far so the theoretical exponentially in creasing miss radius people love to crow about doesn't come into play when your deer has only moved 10 yards. An animal that has gone farther than that will almost always require a change of rest and a different angle if not a complete change of shooting location. So you're probably not firing a follow up in that case for a minute or two. Barrel cools down and the gun shoots to the same point of aim again. And usually inaccurate guns are labeled so because the third shot is a flyer. Two shots though are almost always enough for deer and elk, moose antelope etc... But, dude, what about a charging bear at 20 yards. Umm, big target, well under a hundred yards so far less deviation and the accuracy of the weapon is likely not going to be the limiting factor for actual accuracy in that situation. I'm not opposed to small groups. It's just that they really don't matter as much as people make them out to be. Get your first two shots within 2 inches and you'll be fine for pretty much any real world hunting situation.

I'm not surprised Barnes won. Shoot them in my Weatherby mark v 2506 with dime sized groups. Made a mistake and tried some Nosler partions one time and groups went south this was years ago. Took my gun to my gun smith and he checked my gun and gave it a thorough cleaning & took it back to the range with my Barnes 100 grain loadings i had previously had the dime sized groups with and amazingly back to dime sized groups. He said to never shoot lead core bullets in my gun when i had been previously shooting Barnes without thoroughly cleaning the bore to get rid of lead build up because Cooper bullets do not shoot well with lead build up in the bore. Clean your bore thoroughly and stick soley with the Barnes. After cleaning alot of guns shooting Barnes bullets group even better with a fouled barrel from a shot or two from a Barnes bullet. You can also call Weatherby for a torque chart on their specific guns & stocks because believe me or not that plays a big part in their accuracy. Cleaning bore, checking stock torque and sunglasses will lead to years of tight groups if that Weatherby mag barrel holds up. 257 is a great caliber but as fast as it's traveling, it's a bit of a barrel burner. Happy hunting WTW. Forgot to mention the guy is right about the barrel cleaning. Now go smoke some 🦌 a long way away ! WTH! 👍
@orr89rocz
@orr89rocz 9 месяцев назад
Lead core bullets dont put lead into the bore they have a copper jacket. Its not uncommon for copper fouling to take place with some bullet types however including copper monolithics. I think he probably was refering to copper fouling from lead core bullets causing issues with solid coppers. Lead is soft and the bullet can conform to the bore rifling better. Solid copper is not as soft so any fouling buildup from previous loads can decrease clearance and increase pressure. Just have to see if your barrel is a copper fouler or not. A real worn barrel or high quality match grade lapped barrel is usually smooth and no longer copper fouls
@briankeith922
@briankeith922 9 месяцев назад
@@orr89rocz Whatever the case, do not shoot anything else in a rifle except cooper bullets if you are shooting Barnes bullets in it. It can & will effect the accuracy. What do they charge for that ammo? 2 bucks a pop?

Fast and light. Ttsx is a winner for deer hunting. Other two better for varmint.

Clean the bore between groups it will make the groups tighter just a bore snake is better than nothing at all.

Maybe simply the difference between a leadsled and a wobbly bipod?

Doesnt look like too bad recoil. Its gotta be less than my 300 Wby Mag Ruger #1. What does it compare to?

About like a .270 Win. in a Rem. 700. I have a .300 Wby. Mark V with the Deluxe wood stock that’s not too bad on recoil at 9 lbs., but that lighter Ruger is gonna have a healthy thump.

@raleighthomas3079 ok. My #1 is mot too far from 9#. It's got nice wood & had to put offset mount, ring combo & another scope with a 4" eye relief to get the scope back enough to get the black crown out of the field of view. After years of fighting it, I was told by an old #1 collector that that was a nasty trait due to the way the rifles were designed. Longer eye relief helped dramatically. It still takes you dancing if you let it. Really about the same as my CVA Scout, 45/70 I use for our primitive rifle season. Thanks.

I bet those groups would tighten up with a sandbag instead of bipod
