Excellent video, without a doubt what you have shown us here today is the most amazing, outstanding innovative RV. Not to make light of the fact, you have to love this couple. The gentleman can cook like there's no tomorrow. His wife astounds me concerning the level of her talent. Decades ago when I was still in my 30s. A lady friend of mine played the piano and it caused tears to well in my eyes. When this lady played the harp, it had the same effect. Keep in mind I'm a born and raised Texan. And very I mean very few things cause tears to well up in my eyes. There is something about music that can touch your heart, if allowed. Rick Fort Worth Texas, still in the build stage of my box truck RV. Happy trails!!!

This is rig is absolutely incredible! I liked the advice about not trying to research everything to the extreme because you'll never the "perfect" set up or get started on your journey. I'm in that research phase. There are still so many things to do to before it becomes real.

You really don't need such a large solar set up. I lived for 5 years in a 30' motorhome with a 400 watt solar system. That was back in the day when a 120 watt panel cost $429 on sale! Now I just bought some used 250 watt panels for $85 each from Portland craigslist in Oregon. Of course I had a propane refrigerator, and this guy has a electric huge refrigerator, that consumes 120 volts. You can start with about 400 watts, and increase it by 200 - 400 watts at a time until you have plenty of power.

@johnuppole
@johnuppole 2 года назад
@@chachi5975 but the frame is still not necessarily up to snuff... There's still a lot more to load bearing than just the axles. Not saying they haven't taken care of that, I haven't watched the full video yet. Gary had the same questions I was wondering about as well, so I started combing the comments lol
@chucknSC
@chucknSC 2 года назад
Having three axles distributes the support across more of the frame length. They didn’t detail but I bet the welders added some length to the tube that the frame and axles are welded together on.
@johnuppole
@johnuppole 2 года назад
@chuck neil, I just wonder about the rest of the frame. Overloaded 5th wheel trailers will cause bending/cracking at the front of the frame where the frame rises and extends over the truck bed. Perhaps the guys addressed this when they did the axle and where they added the weight to in relation to the front/rear of the axles. I'm not saying they're wrong, but after watching the video, they didn't really talk too much about how they addressed it like I wished they would've to satisfy my curiosity

Loved the setup with one exception. You made the same mistake that I did in combining (4) 12 volt batteries to get 48 volts. You will never keep the batteries balanced even with a balancer. I had to remove the cells from my 12v batteries, combine 16 cells, buy an overkill bms, and my problems were solved.

I don't know about other states but here in West Virginia, there is a rest area EVERY 40 miles on all interstates and every one has a FREE sewer dump. I think they also have free water too but don't bank on it. I'm not 100% sure about the water but 100% yes on the free sewer dump. It will be on the left on your way out of the rest stop on it's own little pull off.

I get by on my 500w(with a spare ground 230w) year round in Northern Ontario. Lots of panel sweeping(snow) and minimal power use. I keep heat on diesel heaters(220ml/hr for the pair). No running water this winter as I wasn't completely set up(skirting), looking into heat pump mini-split for summer sleep. This is in a 33ft mid profile rv just used just as a remote home for work weeks. I live 500km south and work a rotating schedule. Far cheaper than renting an apartment and using it less than 15 days a month

Your hosts were also an awesome couple too :-) Now my DW doesn't think I'm so crazy for wanting to install a 1300 watt solar panel system, with 4 200aH 12 volt LiFePO4 batteries in parallel after watching this video! Thanks for helping me out with that Tom ;^) We too decided to go with a composting toilet, and the unused black tank will be an extra gray water hold to boost our capacity to 80 gallons, which matches our FW capacity of 84 gallons nicely. That's because we plan on doing Boondocking almost exclusively when we hit the road. Safe, and hoppy travels from The Boondocking Brewer™!

Love Joshua's rig. I want to add a dc charger to our tow rig so as we are rolling down the road we are putting juice in the batteries. Plus I like a cold rig when we are done for the day. Hate walking in to a hot house. Our sticks and bricks has two ac systems. A ductless for our bedroom which only goes above 64' when I'm at work. When I get home the house temp drops. As I tell the wife I work out in the heat all day and I don't care what it costs I want it cool. Still trying to figure out how to put a ductless system on our new rig. A Grand Design Momentum 398m. Any knowledge would be greatly appreciated. Safe travels and roads. Brian and Cindy "xtreambydesign with passion"

I installed a ductless heat pump in my nephew's rental house, with the indoor coil mounted on a TV cabinet in his living room. The tubing goes out the window to the outdoor unit. Works great and so quiet! It is 12,000 Btu's and 120 volts, perfect size for your fifth wheel bedroom, and nearly silent! If you can locate the outside unit in the basement, it will work fine. It will need venting to the bottom or the sidewall away from the intake fan. There is a video of one unit with a factory installed ductless system, and there is a panel on the back side of the outside unit, and it is sealed from the rest of the basement, with about 6 feet between the passenger side door to the back wall where the ductless unit is located on the drivers side. So anything is Possible, maybe not low cost, but possible!

One way to charge a RV battery with the tow vehicle is to run a higher voltage alternator in the truck. Ford used to produce a dual alternator option for their diesel trucks. My thought was to install a 24 volt battery bank on the tow vehicle, and run a 24 volt 2 KW inverter on the truck, then run a 30 amp cord to the trailer, and can run a battery charger in the trailer. Right now, Grand Design is working with a company to put a 9,000 watt alternator on a pickup, with a special cord to the trailer, to power the refrigerator and other things via a 48 volt inverter in the trailer. So 9,000 watts at 50 volts is about 180 amps. That is not really practical with normal wire sizes, it would be #4 wire. But if they placed a inverter in the truck, and then moved the power at say 300 or 480 volts to the trailer, the wire would be much smaller, and then run a charger in the trailer. Pure sine wave inverters are kinda expensive - compared to a modified sine wave inverter. A battery charger normally does not car if it is getting square wave or pure sign wave power. So if the truck has a modified (square) wave power inverter at say 230 volts output, to a charger in the trailer that is 230 volts in to whatever your battery voltage is out, you can to that, and 2,300 watts is only 10 amps, for 14 gauge wire is fine. # 10 wire is good for 24 amps, or a little over 5 KW. I don't know what the voltage output of the Volta alternator that Grand Designs is using, but if at 50 volts, it would be 180 amps, at 100 volts, only 90 amps, but say 480 volts, only 18 amps, so much smaller wire size. Then change to a square wave inverter to run the power back to the battery at a higher voltage, and then convert to charge the RV battery at whatever voltage you want in the RV. My guess is the higher wattage inverters should be at 48 volts, or higher. So all of this charging from the truck engine is no longer important IF you install a large enough solar system. Once I put the 400 watt solar system on my Bounder Class A motorhome, the alternator was no longer the primary charger for my RV battery. So if you install a 2 KW solar system in your RV, there is basically not a real need to run the generator anymore.
@brianroth7852
@brianroth7852 Год назад
@@Kangenpower7 Easier to add a DC to DC charger. Charger runs off your current alternator on tow vehicle. Charger goes to you batteries in the trailer. The nice thing is once the batteries hit fully charged the DC system quits charging. It is also fully integrated with your solar system, ect. Cost $150. Plus cabling.

Amazing concept to be sure, but I did not see anyone else comment so I will. What does the addition of the panels, mechanicals, batteries and power distribution weigh? It wouldn't be weight neutral to factory. What does one have to give up in the cargo, water and sewer specs to stay under the max weight of the suspension, brakes, tires, vehicle powertrain? How long till the frame starts to crack like all of the other trailers that don't have these upgrades? Phenomenal execution though.
@bobharmon6363
@bobharmon6363 5 месяцев назад
Just a reminder that the owner assumes all the risk with changing the OEM suspension upgrades. An "Alterer" approved by NHTSA may modify vehicles following very strict guidelines. Upon completion of a vehicle alteration, an additional label must be applied near and not covering the Original Equipment Manufacturer's (OEM) Certification Label.

Turn them so the top remans affixed and the bottom deploys. Allow them to overlap so water drains off and therefore replacing the need for slide covers. And now you have a viable technology poised to supplant an antiquated one. Great idea, run with it.

Common day folks couldn't afford a system like this, I would imagine this system is in the neighborhood of about $40k ish plus the RV itself $80 ish. I also would imagine the company that installed it did it for the bragging rights and I also think that some of the parts used were donated for advertising rights. Don't get me wrong it's a awesome system, like I said common RV owner could afford it, I have a 40' Jayco Eagle and I've managed to install 4k of solar and only 16K watt hours of storage and has already cost me $14k and that is doing it myself. A system like this could generate enough excess power to allow use of a marine water maker or distiller, meaning you could boondock for months at a time, staying remote, safely using dirty lake or river water. Maximizing the size of an array like this on an electric van could generate enough power to drive about 25 miles a day never using a charging station.

I really hate to think about the amount of uplift that the second layer of solar panels has along the center line of that RV roof when the panels are extended. And add a bit of wind, and I can see that RV being opened like a sardine can. I have been around RVs for nearly 40 years, and if I have learned nothing else, it is that RV s are built as light as possible, partially to ase toeing, but also to ease the overall cost to build them. Most RV s I have had access to have a roof structure made out of 2x2 wood, and not the best quality.

I got to check out their Rig in person recently, it is beyond Awesome! I have 2x 300ah EnduroPower lithium batteries powering my class C and I haven’t had to use the generator in nearly 2 weeks, with only 500 watts of panels. But I don’t have near the power needs they do. They are Super cool people and an have a amazing power system! With awesome batteries!

A good inverter will do the bypass automatically - when you plug in shore power the inverter will pass that through and stop using the batteries. If shore power fails the inverter(s) will instantly go to battery without cutting power to appliances.

4 more actuators on the lower rack and he could tip side to side and for or aft to maximize the sun exposure. This is awesome. Gotta be a 220k rig by now. Good job Joshua.

I have no clue, but I wonder if throwing some Cedar Chips in the composting toilet might help make the smell a little more pleasant?

I have that same toilet and it just smells like whatever wood shavings you put in it. The easiest to find is from pet stores for hamsters but I like your idea of some cedar mixed in! I wonder why he didn't get the urine diverter option, it goes right down in the black tank so you don't have to empty the gallon milk jug of pee!

Great video-- informative and entertaining- I've recently purchased a Silverback 5th wheel - My objective is too create the ultimate boondocking rig- 100% self sufficient, My rig is smaller than Josh's and at the most I'll have two 15k BTU AC/ heat pumps - Love the mooochdocker concept- I'd love to generate so much solar power that I can have multiple moochers. Already have 1600 AH 1600AH at 12v but prolly gonna wire her as a 48V system which puts me at 400 AH - smaller than Josh's but still a very powerful system- especially if I get 4-5kw out of my sliding panel system (on average of course) - seems to make the most sense for my application. Love the slide out solar wings- I've gone through so many solar panel positioning scenarios that when I saw yours I was like- I'm doing THAT- just load up the racks with overwhelming solar power generation - rigid panels are cheap- I look forward to boondocking with you Josh! Grateful I found this video at this time!

I also wanted to be able to bypass one source over the other. So I built a triple transfer switch, which accommodated shore power, generators, and solar inverter. I don't have to do any unplugging/plugging up...I just throw the switches in my box.

All that power and storage and tech. Looks like you could be off grid forever. But wait, what do you do when your black tank is full? Always something to put limits on boondocking.

I said this on your other video: That Traeger works but it is a SEVERE fire hazard. I wouldn’t operate it that close to your fifth wheel. I frequent the Traeger forums. They often go to a conflagration when something fails.
