I tested 27 external SSDs to find out which is the best for gaming.

These are all SSDs I tested, ranked by the Score shown in the video, from fastest to slowest. So the best advice is this: work your way down the list until you find a good deal on a high ranked drive. Easy! So at the time of filming the Crucial X8 (#2) was the best deal, but remember that can always change! (all links are affiliate links)
#1 Gigabyte Vision Drive - (no current listing)

Some important notes: - All tests were done with a high-end, i9-12900K, Z690, DDR5 rig with a 20 Gigabit USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port. If you're wondering why none are showing "1000MB/s or more" like some marketing claims, that is because games usually consist of a lot of smaller files that are much harder to read or copy. - In case it wasn't clear from the thumbnail, title and video: I am ONLY looking at Gaming Performance today, followed by value (price), because that's what I think a gaming SSD should be about. I am not weighing any unique features at all! So if you want to pay more for an SSD with RGB or IP ratings, or prefer to buy a super lightweight one (weight graph is in the video), that is entirely up to you! - OBVIOUSLY there is more to game loading than just your SSD performance, and actual time savings will vary per system and per game. Your biggest upgrade is always going from any HDD to any SSD, and upgrading from a slower SSD (assuming you own one already) to a faster one isn't nearly as important. But why settle for something that performs worse when this video shows that great performers don't have to be expensive at all? 😉 - Regarding capacity: I know some people will get upset that there are different capacities in the graphs. That's just the way it has to be as I cannot just buy every drive in the capacity I would like (If you want to change that, free to donate using paypal or the super thanks button for example, so I can buy even more SSDs next time ;) ). BUT, while it’s generally true that larger SSDs perform better than slower ones, the benefits beyond 1 TB are usually insignificant, AND that is more relevant with internal drives than external ones. That’s why I included the Samsung T7 Shield in both 1TB and 2TB capacities, just to show you they will offer pretty much the same level of performance. The same goes for other products as well (I have several in multiple capacities, but that I did not include in the graph). So generally speaking, this tier list will NOT change whether you’re looking at 500GB, 1 TB or 2TB models, and even cross capacity comparisons hold a lot of weight. As always, hope you enjoy the video and if you have any questions, just ask! 😘

One note to have better control in testing and benchmark with a better control, try to use same TB capacity. Given that some that have smaller Capacity are designed for faster loads than those that are higher in capacity or vice versa. The Bandwidth is saturated by the information and capacity. If we put 1TB with 1TB makes better control than having a 2TB to 1TB face off. Just a note

First video I have ever saw from you but Iby Gosh I appreciate how thorough you have been with testing and explaining your reasoning for each spec and why you think it's important. So you got a sub from me for the effort you have put into doing your own research and testing. Getting such a well-scripted video to summarize 27 different SSDs of which you personally tested must have been at minimum a month of work if not more. Plus the cost of obtaining all of them even minus the discount you get from claiming business expenses and the like must have cost a bomb to do as well.

Thanks to your review I found Gigabyte Vision 1TB (Very hardly indeed) for 175 Eur in my country and purchase it. It was only 10 Eur more expensive than Samsung T7 Shield which was my first pick before watching this review. I have tested it in real live scenario (2K, 4K Videos, pictures, documents etc. but not games) and it is fastest thing I have ever used for that mater, I'm impressed. Tnx for your review again. :)

I find it really interesting how the SanDisk Extreme Pro that is supposed to be rated at 2000MB/s consistently seems to be slower than the Crucial X8 which is only rated at 1050MB/s that is quite crazy that SanDisk is able to get away with lying to their customers about their performance of their drives. I think my next External SSD will most likely be the Crucial X8. That is very surprising.

Thanks Nada, this is really good information as I am always looking to get faster SSD's. Mine are hanging off of a PS5 where I store the PS4 games. Interestingly I build my own 2Tb with a PCIe 4x4 that performs great (about 970write and 900 read). And I am now looking for a USB4 enclosure that will be able to out perform all of them - it is hanging off of a MBP16 and want to test if I can get it at least to around 2800/2600. @@TechTesters I've also seen the new portable SSD Corsair EX100U which performs great! Also ADATA is about to launch a brand new USB4 SE920 external SSD which would probably outperform competitors in case we have a USB4 compatible port (but backwards compatible with USB 3 gen 2x2, gen 2 and below). Would be interesting also to consider the new USB4 SSD NVMe enclosures such as ZikeDrive or HyperDrive Next 😬

This is what I was looking for I see so many SSD's that are too pricey like over 200 and if I learnt anything working at an electronics retail centre is that pricier doesn't exactly mean better. It all depends on what you intent to use it for and really it feels like stamping LED's and calling it "gaming" is the same as stamping "organic" onto food. You just do that and instantly its way more expensive

Hi, Thank You so much for your extensive and comprehensive review. However, I am not sure which direction to go in. All of a sudden my continuity camera started to give me problems. I think the fix might be an external SSD, but am not sure. It might just be software, but an apple tech said it might be that my external is too slow to handle it all. It does take a while to boot up and doesn't work in my main user account, but does in a new and fresh user account. I'm using a 2017 i7 iMac.with an iphone 14.. Should I look into the ones you use for live gaming or something else. I would like to boot up in it and do everyday things in it..... I would think that any of the SSD's would work as it would be better than the traditional one I am currently using. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

Don't forget you can install new game to external storage you just need to transfer them to internal when you play them. NVMe in an enclosure is a good idea, I have a SK Hynix P31 Gold P31 in an enclosure and a Samsung Evo 870 in a 2.5 inch enclosure. NVMe is marginally faster but both transfer between 2 and 2.5Gbps

I feel the best external ssd is always a proper ssd enclosure with a decent internal ssd inside it. Almost all the external ssds all come without a dram cache, and I believe hmb (host memory buffer) would not work over a usb connection, so durabilty and random io performance would suffer quite a lot.
@TechTesters
@TechTesters 2 года назад
I considered adding that option, but it would just be way too many options (tons of enclosures, tons of SSDs), so I decided to keep it to "ready to go" products only. Might do in the future though ;)

Great work as always. Would you consider making a Gen 3 nvme ssd roundup? I'm looking to buy a secondary 2TB drive for my games and I'm not sure what's the best option. The cheapest I can find is the Crucial P2 at around 160 euros but I don't know if I would be sacrificing too much in terms of performance.
@mingyi456
@mingyi456 2 года назад
The crucial p2 has no dram cache, and recently got silently downgraded to qlc, so I would avoid it like the plague. I see that the 970 evo plus has dropped in price tremendously on amazon, and even though samsung silently swapped the components, it is still a tlc drive with a dram cache. When it is on sale, the price on amazon sg is 150 sgd for tb, and I have seen as low as 140 sgd before. I got the 2tb 970 evo plus at 271 sgd, and I imagine the usd or euro pricing might be closer to 200.
@TechTesters
@TechTesters 2 года назад
I will be doing a roundup on NVMe SSDs in general, but I don't have the P2. Looking here, the P5 isn't much more expensive and the much, much safer option imho!
@mingyi456
@mingyi456 2 года назад
@@TechTesters Yes, the P5 is a rather mediocore ssd, but at least it is decent and is priced accordingly. Although for some reason from what I see on amazon the new p5 plus is somehow cheaper than the p5 at times, and the p5 plus is much better than the p5, so it may be worth it even if it is only going onto a gen 3 slot.
@chrys9256
@chrys9256 2 года назад
@@TechTesters Except I can't seem to find a 2TB P5 anywhere. It seems to be out of stock in most places I usually shop and the P5 Plus is a bit too expensive. The Samsung 970 Evo would be the safe choice, yes, but I was hoping I could get away with spending a bit less. Regardless, I would be very interested in seeing how some of the more affordable NVMe drives perform, like the Crucial P2, WD Blue SN550 and SN570, WD Green SN350, Kioxia EXCERIA G2, Kingston NV1, Lexar M610, Patriot P300, Intel 660p and 670p, ADATA SX6000 Pro to name a few.
@mingyi456
@mingyi456 2 года назад
@@chrys9256 At the 2tb capacity, I think it would make more sense to get a qlc drive with dram cache over a tlc drive without a dram cache if you really want to cheap out. No point getting a qlc drive without a dram cache, it is the worst of both worlds. I am not sure if the 660p and 670p come in 2tb capacities (the 670p also seems to be grossly overpriced for me in amazon, costing even more than the 970 evo plus while the 660p is one of the oldest qlc drives and has rather horrible performance), and I think the rest of the drives in your list are dram-less tlc drives. Some qlc drives that come with dram are the sabrent rocket q, corsair mp400 and the teamgroup mp34q. I recommend looking at them if you are getting a 2tb drive, but please avoid getting them at 500gb or less.

Hi there. I’ve got Xbox series x and will buy external SSD to play old Xbox one games. My question is that if the speed 1050 mb/s mentioned is from USB C to C only or not. Because Xbox have USB A port. If USB C to A will not give this speed, then X6 is more budget friendly option.

What was the SSD that was the cooler during gaming?

would not hurt to mention those are glued in and most of them have proprietary interfaces soldered on, same like with external 2,5" hdds - if f.e. the file allocation table gets damaged you can say goodbye to the device connected via usb, with proprietary sata or m.2 nvme port you would have a chance to connect it directly to a motherboard and try repair or format it yet.... anyhow, external box and a regular ssd are a better solution, and you can reuse the older small drive from your computer when you upgrade it with a newer bigger and better one...

Nice testing there. But people are still using internal ssd's for storage too, right ? It would trigger me having external ssd's hanging off my pc.

Yes of course, but right now I'm at the point where I've almost used up the 3tb of storage in my gaming laptop with nothing but games pretty much. I have like 400gb left and I don't know if I should buy another 2tb ssd to replace the 1tb ssd in my laptop by cloning with all the boot files and stuff. And using that 1 tb ssd in an enclosure so I can still use it. Or just buy one of these and use an external 2tb ssd. What do you think would be best? I'm really leaning towards replacing the 1tb ssd with a 2tb so i have 4tb internal and just that 1tb external

If I connect the Kingston SX2000 to a Thunderbolt 4 port, will it give me 2000mb/s?

which external hard drive does not lose its performance when transferring large files of the order of 100 gb
@ryanwallace983
@ryanwallace983 2 года назад
How does this compare to buying a quality internal SATA drive and using a USB adapter? Does that net better performance? I might go ahead and benchmark that using CDM and the Mushkin Source drive I use for my Xbox games and a Startech adapter I do know that I can achieve over a Gb/sec copying Apex Legends from my internal drive on my Xbox One X although I did mod it to accept a 2tb SSD as well so that’s best case scenario
@TechTesters
@TechTesters 2 года назад
You'll lose some performance with the USB adapter vs the internal connector, so performance will be a bit weaker than the faster (S tier specifically) you see in this graph. BUT, if you already own an older SATA SSD, it's a cheap way to get some external storage :)

Hello Techtesters. Thank you so much for such a comprehensive video. Really informative. Can you please confirm the model of Sandisk Extreme tested in the video. It appears that there are V1 and V2 versions of the models in the market and these models are marketed at different speeds. Thanks

There's actually a few "optimized for Series X|S" games that work from an external drive, such as the Master Chief collection.
@TechTesters
@TechTesters Год назад
Oh cool! I need to look into that as my Series X is always short on free space.

on he orien s500 you can put an ssd with more storge and speed on it that makes it better

Six in the half months later, I got my Samsung T7 Shield for Christmas today, at this point, this is why Hard Disk Drive is always slower than Solid State Drive on my laptop while gaming, so soon as I got a Samsung T7 Shield, it's a shame when Samsung T7 Shield is normally slower than a Gigabyte Vision Drive while gaming, but the Hard Disk Drive is even a lot much slower than Gigabyte Vision Drive while gaming, so maybe one day, I'll buy a 2tb Gigabyte Vision Drive + Solid State Drive in it on Amazon until day one.

If Gigabyte ever makes a 2TB one, not sure they do :P

i digress but data integrity is a subject not most talked about since ssd is being marketed as vastly durable and fast compared to hdd..it;ll be interesting to see future benchmark not only based on speed but doing stress test to check for reliability
@TechTesters
@TechTesters 7 месяцев назад
It's just not something you can actually test. You'd have to stress at least several samples of each drive 24/7 for a few years to really start seeing differences, and by that time everyone will be buying completely different drives anyway. It'll be interesting, but it's not really viable.
