What do you do, when you can't seem to stop failing?
2020 was a hard year for everyone. I wanted to share my own experience over the past 12+ months, and be real about the struggles I'm having. Depression and anxiety have plagued me my entire adult life, and it can be hard to keep going.
But we can't give up.
There's still time, and there's still hope.
No matter how long you've tried and failed, how long you've been stuck in the same negative patterns, you can change. No matter how chaotic this world gets, with pandemics, with elections, with riots, we can still choose to pick ourselves up, and keep striving.
Know that I'm on your side, and I'm struggling with you.
Subscribe to follow my journey. / @kirstenquist

i'm 63 now and terminally ill. At 27, I too was depressed and anxious; thought I was wasting my life; that I had "already failed". But as my time runs out, I see it all so differently. Life is so very short. It never really mattered what exams I passed or failed, what salary grade I achieved, what artistic masterpieces I did or didnt create. My life was is its own point, my only and every chance to experience being part of this wonder-filled cosmos. All that matters is that I relish the moment. squeeze every drop from it, no matter how sweet or bitter. It will all be over too, too soon. Mary Oliver's poem, "Wild Geese" has it just right. You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves. Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine. Meanwhile the world goes on. Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain are moving across the landscapes, over the prairies and the deep trees, the mountains and the rivers. Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air, are heading home again. Whoever you are, no matter how lonely, the world offers itself to your imagination, calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting - over and over announcing your place in the family of things

You are not young at 27, you are young until 23-25, which is when senesence begins. The problem is that the "education" system wastes 12-20 years of people's lives and their youth, while producing weak, stupid useless people. That goes double for STEM, because those are actual legit fields, but they don't teach you crap.

A couple tips for people who start and fail many times: 1) Just begin again. Theres nothing stopping you but your own perception of yourself. Just because you failed 1 time or 100, just start again. 2) If you focus on your failure and the bad about yourself, your mind will continue to generate those negative thoughts. (think about the effort you put in and not the results) 3) Don't compare yourself to others. It snowballs and sooner or later nothing you do is good enough. Only compare yourself your past self.

Impossible not to compare yourself to others in such a competitive world. Everyone has to quite literally compete with other people, and be better than them to reach any competitive goal. Not comparing yourself to others is delusional.
@Jonas-qf1cu
@Jonas-qf1cu Год назад
@@MrSociofobs i believe you are right, you can not stop comparing. its more meant to get an emotional distance between the comparison you do. you can compare yourself to others, but you may not rate yourself and draw conclusions about your selfworth from it and take it as an absolute unchangeable fact. its one picture of a video, a momentary shot of your life. you have to let the movie run, and not attach to the picture you took. also for me, it is like, i tend to take pictures of the failures, but the things i did well i dont picture, i cant even name them. this is not objective, its a programm how you treat yourself and look onto yourself, you ve learned from your parents. so its more of a training you can do about looking mindful on what actually happened. and you will suck at start, but with training you will become better. actually thats psychotherapy. you get more distance between you and your emotions, and you get a different point of view on what actually has happened. just start to questioning if it is any benificial that you rate yourself as negative, even if you conclude it is not benificial to you, you will not deny that someone else was better, so there is no danger to loss of reality. its about training your perception. comfort yourself and try to find positive aspects as well. (you tried it, it didnt work, try again! - look how much efford you put into this, you can be proud to have dedicated so much time/energy into it) you dont have to believe in them, just take them as a possible alternate point of view, and see how it feels.

I’ve yet to watch the video but my reaction before watching this and being 27, I agree life isn’t a race, but at the same time there are things we can miss out on even if you do them later in life. Like take being in school again, you experience completely different things being the popular kid vs not being the popular kid, in that same concept, walking down the street in a small town at 22, 25, 27 and 33 it’s the same experience but greatly different. I still plan to do everything I want to do in life, but doing those things at a later age has a different effect, I don’t really know how to explain it.

I was crying today feeling like a failure, like a waste of space. I couldn't bring myself to go to work. I almost feel like I'm too sensitive for this world. But I found your video... I'll just keep trying. I just have to do one thing, and it's to not give up. I think I can manage that.

Thank you for sharing. Despite what your life has been up until now, and regardless of anything you have done in the past, what matters most is what you do next. You are equipped to make a good decision in this moment. And it sounds like you made the first one, which is to not give up! We just have to take each moment as it is and ask, "What is the best I can do in this moment?" Sometimes looking at the whole day is overwhelming. But we can focus on the exact moment we are in and make a good next decision. And the goal is to make choices that are easy to live with in the future. That we won't regret. One moment at a time. One breathe at time. I wish you the best in your journey ❤️❤️

@@thelostcosmonaut5555 [Edited for clarity] Thank you for your response. May I ask another question? Well, two questions. If it's weird, don't worry about it. I understand if you don't want to answer it. Question 1: How are corporations stealing your future? Question 2: And, are they stealing it in a different way that the educational system didn't steal the futures of Millennials and Zoomers?
@thelostcosmonaut5555
@thelostcosmonaut5555 Год назад
@@LA_HA The main culprits are real estate corporations. Look up companies like Blackrok and Tricon, among others. They are buying up all the surplus housing and hoarding it which means they get to set the prices. In my city, you won't find anything below 1100 dollars. I've seen studios go for as much as 1700 dollars. That's more than a whole pay check for me and I make 23 bucks an hour. The price for school, trades included, is insane. At the local community College you can expect to see 300 dollars per credit hour. Reminder: full time school is considered 12 credit hours, do the math. Now, since I can't buy a house (many of the starter homes are beginning to be for rent only, anyway) I have to look at apartments. The companies who own the apartments know that I can't afford anything else but I still need to be close to my job and family/friends. This puts them in a position to charge me just as much as I can afford with virtually nothing left over for me at the end of each month. They also add on bs charges that you can't opt out of so the base rent advertised is always a couple hundred bucks higher. Not to mention that they charge 250 application fees that you don't get back. These corporations have also done aways with pensions, outsourced work to poorer countries, and pay you just enough to keep coming back every day. They do this even when they have the guts to brag about record profits. AND if they fail, the working class bails them out and foots the bill! Should I go on about the 20 year long war we just lost, as well? It's also funny because they throw up pride flags and talk about "diversity" when it's all just a PR stunt to make people think they care and aren't committing human rights abuses on a daily basis.
@KirstenQuist
@KirstenQuist Год назад
I suppose some of it may be due to social media. There's the pressure of comparison. You see people in their early 20s who appear to "have their lives together" and it's easy to compare yourself to them. But from my real life experience it seems many people are still figuring out what to do in their late 20s.

Back in the day when I was about 27 - 30 years old, I had to face myself and felt very much the same way You explained in this video. Now that I'm older I have found that life is never really a failure. What has helped me was to go slowly forward anyway, try to enjoy life and don't give a f*ck if someone else comes to tell that you should live this way or that way. This society seems very much to be sick in many ways; like overproduction, having too much things that are not needed, assuming there is a certain (the right) way to live and exist. That all creates easily stress and negativity to a degree that kills people. So go and live your life just as you want and don't ever feel bad about that ;)

In retrospect I realised that the times I felt lacklustre and motivated were the times my brain was trying to tell me that I should be doing something else in life. I value freedom a lot but real satisfaction comes when you have responsibility for other people and do something to make their lives better. However bad and anxious you feel in life that moment will eventually pass.

I’m 30 and have battled extreme depression for most of my life. But there’s something off about this. The way it’s put forward. The way you present yourself. It’s setting off alarm bells inside me. Comparison will always have you falling short. The only person you need to compare yourself to is yourself. And success can look as many different ways as there are people. You might achieve all of the aforementioned success as you defined it here, with lists, RU-vid subscribers, etc. But even then, you may feel empty. If you feel strongly about what you’re saying…then I agree. Keep pushing. But don’t focus on the end of the mountain, try focusing on the journey. Hope you find what you’re looking for.

I agree, it's not a healthy mindset. I wanted to express 100% honestly what I was feeling though. It's been a struggle between what I know logically to be true and good, and what the negative thought patterns, that I've had most of my life, continue to tell me. But yes, comparison is definitely only going to lead to misery. And so is focusing on the future. I realize I need to live in the present and ask, "What is the best action I can take in this moment?" Option 3. Accept failure; there's a difference between saying I have failed and saying I am a failure. We probably identify ourselves in the wrong way. Perfectionism is a part of you that wants to protect you, maybe feeling vulnerable hurts you. If you start to accept, you begin to lose fear, and you will tear down your wall. I'm 27 and I understand your situation; I've failed and am trying to change my habits and my life, but I keep procrastinating, and I'm stuck in the same life. I thought paradoxically, all this personal improvement: discipline, meditation, reading books etc. might feed our perfectionist side, and make us feel even more frustrated and wrong if we fail. After all, if we take it easy, it's because a part of us would like to enjoy the journey, and take its time.

This video came at the perfect time lol, I turn 27 soon, and im now just beginning my adult life, I sometimes feel behind compared to people my age at times, who started earlier than me, but looking at it now, sometimes we start later than others, and we are late bloomers in life. I read your title and laughed a bit. So young! I can tell you that for me life without misery started at 38, when I finally got psychological help for the real problems in my background. Depression is 'rage spread thin', a symptom or indicator of what is actually wrong. Now I am 78 and still learning to establish new parameters of self-discovery and achievement. Life is naturally full of pitfalls. The way to tackle it is always to look to the future.

I lived with depression and anxiety all my life, so I relate to your story 100%. I recognise a sensitive soul and an artist in you, and it is heartwarming to see how much of that you are able to express. I know how sadness and depression leads to inaction, how inaction invites shame and wanting to hide even deeper. But when you make it into art - it's a moment of transformation, the shadows become less dense, more transparent. Beauty recognised and expressed invite light... So keep following the beauty! You can do that only at your own pace, all schedules and "must"s are only tools, not the end product. When tools don't work... something else will. Best words come from silence, not noise (hope this makes sense what I'm trying to say)

I’m 27 years old, and I feel just like that. I’ve had many opportunities in life and I ‘ve waste them all. I quit med school, because I wanted free time and I was scared of not being good enough in the practice despite having good grades. I also quit because it was unbearable to see my ex at the hospital, and I had financial difficulties, but I could have stayed and maybe overcome it. Now I’m in Europe, and at the start I traveled a lot and dream that the limit was the sky, but now I work at a Bar, I’m not good enough at my job, I’m struggling to pay rent, I feel completely lost, and watching on social media how my classmates take their final exams to become doctors. I wanted to be someone amazing in life, I wanted to stand out, but I’ve messed up all the opportunities that I’ve had.

Brother... The further away from social media you are, the better. I'm Gen X, and remember a time before all that. Psych class in college taught me almost no one knows what to do with their life until sometime after about 25. Go out, meet as many different types of people you can, engage in real Convo, and let go of useless acquaintances that remind you of the past. Other walks of life are critical to know, can change your perspective entirely. That is what happened to me, and I haven't looked back at all..

Hey! I feel you. I'm from Poland, 27, and I did almost everything I could to get into med school. While being there depression and anxiety striked and I couldn't make it. Now I'm working at McDonald's, the ambitious girl I knew seems to be gone and I wasted many years of my life spent chasing that big dream of mine. But we have only one life. That's why I'm moving on everyday and I believe that's worth doing, despite all the struggles and the feeling I'm far behind my peers. I wish you all the best in life, and I wish that to myself too. I think the most important thing is to keep on going forward, despite all the challenges and things that you may stumble upon. I keep my fingers crossed for all of you ✌❤😉

Just the fact that you state God is not real makes God real, because you cannot deny the possibility of something such as God. The fact is billions have believed in A God, that is just something not to be dismissed, these people are having real experiences. Your opinion of God not being real is just your opinion, but the fact is for many people God is Real. Maybe when you die you will realise God is real or you might just be nothingness, because if God is not real or some kind of force creating this reality isn’t real then you will go to nothingness, enjoy the nothingness.

Watching this at 27 yo. One thing I noticed is how easy going is success when you achieve something good and how struggling to let go is the failure, even thou it could be meaningless, but still it eats you up. Yes we have to keep trying. I think one mistake I keep making is thinking I can make big changes in my life without first addressing mental health. Having higher expectations than what I'm capable of. It's okay to lower expectations temporarily to work on yourself, and then to build those expectations as you get better. And learning to let go of failure is a big part of all of that!

This really hits me as I’m 31 kind of feeling in a similar boat. It’s like instead of progressing, you go in the opposite direction with each time you beat yourself down. I’m a video creator as well and I’m so glad to find this video. In 2019 I was making more videos, and everything you mentioned is what happening with me. I deal with visible tics since I was 14 and it’s taken a hit to my confidence and I just feel awkward. I still post occasionally but the content hasn’t felt fulfilling yet as I feel I have so much more talent than I am presenting. The only thing that really holds my depression and anxiety back is weirdly just being around people and my job to distract me. Thanks for posting this video and I hope everything is going better.

I will be 29 in less than a month. 27 was the worst year of my life. It was the culmination of the last 26 years before that all coming to a head. The proverbial sins of my early to mid-twenties combined with the unresolved pain that I had buried from childhood; all mixed together in a toxic cauldron of alcohol and stagnation. I was done for... ...Then I hit rock bottom. ...I'm 13 months sober now; I traveled to Europe earlier this year and solo'd 15 countries in 8 weeks; I've moved halfway across the U.S. to start a new life amongst some of my best friends in the world. I can see again. I survived. 28 has been a beautiful struggle against the absolute death that was 27.. but I can look back now and say that that year had to happen. I had to break and crumble and burn to be rebuilt into something better. I know this video is 2 years old now so perhaps we're roughly the same age and you have similar thoughts, but even if not, to anyone else struggling immensely at 27: think of it as the most important struggle of your life. Give in to it, break down, cry your guts out and get to that point where you vow to change if only to make sure you never reach that low a point ever again. Because you can always go back there; it isn't hard to find rock bottom again. But there is no guarantee you will survive the next one. In fact, your struggle right now can also still take you out - but it hasn't yet, (if you're alive and reading this) which means somewhere inside you you've already chosen to want to live. So, if not death, then life. If life... then onward and up. From rock bottom, there is no other direction left to go in. There's a nice and almost comforting simplicity in that. Change is necessary... but wondrous.

I don't think I necessarily have courage, but I know the deep pain of NOT doing what's important, and that's a huge driving force. Failure is scary, but what's more scary is wasting years of your life and living with regret.

This video was very well done and it had a great impact on me! I could absolutely relate to the feelings of discouragement that come with feeling like you are not getting much done or missing deadlines etc. This was my definitely my favorite video on your channel yet! Your vulnerability really spoke volumes. Thank you.

Thank you Kevin for the kind words and support. And discouragement is just part of life I suppose. But we have to learn how to turn down the discouragement in our minds and turn up the action! I hope to create more videos in a similar vein in the near future. Thanks again ❤❤❤

As someone who just turned 26 last month and already feeling that cycle again of trying another thing and feeling that nothing is working, I'm feeling so much stress and watching this video while pushing myself to finish work, and I feel like It is better knowing that the "normal" of the world is that we all struggle in one way or another. Life isn't a race. As you said, as long as you breathe, it's not too late. To every soul reading this message, Trust yourself, and may god help you achieve what you want. Peace!

Kirsten, this is SOOOOOOOO GOOD! I hope you know that you and your work are greatly appreciated. Keep it up! You have so much talent! Just keep plugging away at this and enjoy the journey. I agree with Ventus Media, don't get hung up on subs (easier said than done), but you have great content. The thing I like about the episodes I have watched so far is that you bring value to your work. Keep it up... Keep it up... Keep it up! And once again, just enjoy the journey, you can do it!

Aw thanks for the amazing support and encouragement Jason!! ❤😊 I definitely plan to keep going, though not as often as I would like (likely 1-2/month rather than 1 per week). I will try to keep bringing value!! What kind of content do you find most helpful?

Below is a poem I wrote and dedicated to my own daughter who has found the last few years incredibly hard. Watching others struggle is painful. I have often wished that I had a magic wand so that I could wave problems, worries, anxiety, stress...all away. I believe, however, that each of us has the power to heal ourselves. We are far more powerful than we think. Blessed Gratitude by Frans Kuiper Gifts from the universe coming to you, Everything depends on what you will do, Actively pursue what your heart desires, Nothing shall stop you not even bushfires. Thoughts become words with power to create, Trust your own instincts and don’t hesitate, Follow your own intuition-let go, Old wounds shall heal as love begins to flow. Wonderful things not yet perceived abound, Changing perspectives with a shift in ground, You are the fourth cup yet only see three, You are the blessing you seek but can’t see.

27 here too 👋 I've been going through a similar phase on and off for the last few years, feeling out of place and lost. It's been a slow transition, but now, each time I get to that stagnant low point, it seems to pick back up again sooner than the time before. I think I owe a lot of it to practicing self-awareness and mindfulness. I've finally found what works for me after all this time too; disregarding judgment of myself and others, exercising regularly and eating healthier, and setting and achieving a few main goals each day just to name a few. Reading and journaling have been huge for me as well. No matter what you're going through, you always have the power to make a change for the better. By obsessing with the summit, we will never make it there. There's always going to be many ups and downs along the way, but without the downs, we would never have any failures or learn from our mistakes. Life would be easy and boring, and it's the randomness in life that keeps things interesting. I wish the best for you, Kirsten, and anyone else going through a similar situation! Thanks for opening up and sharing your experience with us. Don't ever give up on yourself, no matter how hard times get. Be kind to yourself and do what brings you peace and happiness ✌️ 😊

Thank you! I think there's a place for goals, but they need to be undertaken responsibly. I think since I've filmed this I've gotten a little more of a nuanced view. It's most important to accept yourself and your life in the present, then try and grow from there. I wish you the best on your journey!

Really enjoyed watching your video Kirsten, it was well filmed and put together. I'm new to photography and filming and started my channel in 2020 and I know its hard to keep motivated when you've filmed and edited a video and it doesn't look exactly how I want it, but I just try and focus on improving one thing at a time and take it one step at a time. Keep strong and I look forward to seeing some more of your videos 👍

I am 27 and have been sick for past 10 years. I had high hopes from my life but all of them seem to be fading away. Due to my illness not only have I failed to achieve my career goals but also failed in relationships. The worse part is there are plenty of people around, including those who I call family, to judge me but no one who can understand show a little bit of compassion. Sometimes I feel alone. Darkness comforts me. But, somehow I still hope someday things are going to change.

Thank you. Things have gotten better. Creatively, I found I was just so worried about making good content, the perfect content, finding my niche, that I stopped enjoying the process. So I started giving myself permission to create without sharing. To just create for the sake of creating, to create for the sake of learning, with zero expectations of posting it online. That has helped hugely in my creative recovery. Good luck on your journey!

Kirsten, you are a beautiful soul inside and out. I have visited your instagram page and you have some of the most wonderful and beautiful photos, content and work that I have seen in a long time. When your depression and anxiety is telling you to stop or trying to bring you down, do not ever let it. You would be depriving the world of the beauty and light that you have to deliver to it. Don't ever be afraid to be you and show your light onto this dark world. I have struggled and continue to struggle with anxiety and depression and there are some days that I win and some days that I just sleep away. Focus on the days that you win, on the days that are when you bring your most beautiful self and work to the world to make it a better place. Please don't stop posting, don't ever stop creating, I love your soul, your work, your energy and who you are.

Another 27 here! I swear there is something to this spesific age. I know you’re 29 right now since this video is published two years ago. But I have seen other recent comments so I’m guessing the algorithm is pushing it again🎉 just wanted to say I appreciate your vulnerability, it’s a hard pill to swallow in many cases. In some parts of the video I almost felt like I was watching myself. So that’s why I think I’m allowed to give you a friendly advice/opinion take it however you wish. Your storytelling and visuals are just amazing! I know you probably doubted that many times because I did (I’m a designer myself) so I know how sometimes no matter what you do it just doesn’t feel enough. But it’s more of a perfectionism problem than a time management or discipline problem. You should also take a look at the imposter syndrome. And finally we all need an external support system which will be there for us when we can’t. When you feel those unpleasant feelings please reach out to your loved ones so they can remind you the real you❤

Thank you for this comment, and sorry it took so long to respond. I appreciate the support and advice! I definitely have a perfectionist tendency which I'm trying to overcome. It's hard not to have that as an artist! I will continue reaching out for support, you do the same! Good luck with your designing and with your journey! ❤️

Thank you ❤ I feel so bad, in 30 ive tried so many times, worked so much and I feel like everything was useless... I have degrees, talents, I studied so much but I cant find a job that I like and pays well, my dreams seem unreachable. Im thinking about giving them up. Ive lost 4 yrs bc of health issues. I started my channel on yt after years of delaying and its not doing as good as I would like to. I hate everything rn and feel so alone.
