No stupid squad numbers, no tattoos, no diving, no praying to the heavens after a goal, no shirt logos, no stupid goal celebrations straight at the cameras, better football, and no prima donnas !
..if only we could have traded one of these goals for 3 weeks later in the disastrous 1-1 draw vs Poland! when we did not make it to the German World Cup tournament, 1974. I was so nervous as a 16 yr old sat on the sofa watching the Poland qualifier at Wembley, THAT, no joke, MY KNEES WERE KNOCKING TOGETHER, I was that nervous, almost like stage fright!
Haha me too, Poland 1973 was my first experience of what would become the recurring feeling of watching England ever since. Nerves, knotted stomach and a feeling of impending doom.
yes but we played you off the park [ denied certain penalty when gorgon fouled clarke [ stupid league bosses woudnt let player rest weekend before that game
@@timrobinson100 certain penalty? Roy MC farland rugby tackled the polish striker lato when he was one on one with shilton. Poland had a good side in 74. They got to the semi finals of the 74 world cup. They beat Italy, Argentina and Brazil in that world cup.
@@noelball5137 I have vague memories of Peter Shilton appearing on Blue Peter, training with Peter Purves, sometime between the Austria and Poland games. Shilts was confident that England would sweep Poland aside, as they did...except on the scoreboard!
It was a great atmosphere at Wembley that night. Everyone was cheering for the 6th, then 7th and oh how we wanted eight!! I could hardly talk at school the next day as I had almost lost my voice!!
The Austrian side were a Decent Team at this time they had a play- off waiting for them vs Sweden in W Germany which they went and lost 1 - 2 - Hungary finished on the same points as these two .
If you are honest and watch the Poland game all through England didn't have the wit to make many clear cut chances against a much better team than Austria - all their attacks were concentrated down the middle. England had the players to have qualified for the finals and put on a reasonable show (as they proved on the summer tour under Joe Mercer when he brought on a lot of new players). However if England had got past Poland, Ramsay would have stayed as manager and wouldn't have changed the team. And England would probably have suffered the same fate as Italy did - going out in the first round.
@@garrywood5345 Not sure if you saw everything twice when you watched the match, but it was 1 disallowed goal and 2 clearances off the line. And the goal was disallowed for a very good reason: Clarke handling the ball. The penalty looked iffy, and in fact Peters admitted in his autobiography that he dived. As well as England played and as unlucky as they were that night, they would have probably lost 1:2 if McFarland hadn't grabbed Lato by his shirt, which by today's standards would be an immediate red card.
Football is all about opinions, any neutral Football fan watching The England v Poland game will surely have thought England were the better team.Poland rode their Incredible luck and carried on the Crest of a wave to 3rd place...Good Luck to them, but for England....We will Never know...I would have thought a final place at least. 🏴🏴🏴🎄
magnificent that night [ good enough to have won the 1974 world cup[ this might have been the score against poland, had tomazecski not played so well,[ the quality was there it always has been, dont listen to the doom media who wrote the seventies off, we had great players
Tim , i really think you over thought that . A great england performance but win the world cup on it ?...i agree like you that we had great players but Holland really were the best around at that time .
@@ukpole1238 Yep they did much the pity . I thought the dutch stole the show in 74 . They got too cocky v the germans and paid the price . As you say its opinions . Had england got there i think we may have got to the semis .
@@Lord_Hillcrest01 yeah maybe...were some good English player's about then. Tony Currie, Channon,Alan sniffer Clarke up front. Who knows...Top scorer at the 74 world cup was the polish striker lato with 7 goals and in second place the other polish striker Szarmach. They played really attacive football bit yh...the Dutch were an amazing side especially Johan Cruyff
