Man, I'm digging nearly everything on that parking lot. I hope you guys are working on that Ramcharger in the back too. I would love to see what you guys do to one. I finished a Cummins swap in mine in April last year, then drove it from Pennsylvania to Georgia and back about a month later. It was an absolute blast.

The holy grail of 2nd gens

I'm from Florida, and our trucks don't get rusted out like that unless someone is driving their truck down into the saltwater. That rusty thing had to be in some northern state that slats their roads. I've had many trucks, and I've never seen rust on them like that. I live 3 miles from the Gulf of Mexico and I have a 2001 Ford Lightning that I've used many times to launch my boat in saltwater, and looking under it you'd think it has been like an Arizona truck its entire life. No rust to be found.

You should build a 4-door Cummins Ram Charger. They really ought to exist, and it’s a travesty that they don’t. Just imagine a factory Cummins Suburban dually with tow mirrors and cab lights and 8 lugs.

Brandon, the reason that Dodge didn't make the 4 door trucks in 2nd gen is the frames weren't strong enough. Back then, 2nd gen trucks that were extended cab and a factory snow plow package bent the frames to the point, Dodge wouldn't warranty for frame damage. The frame buckled right behind the cab where the frame changes shape. If I wanted to do a second gen truck as a 4 door, I'd purchase a roof from a 2016-2020 truck, graft a single cab to the existing cab and Panel Bond the roof in place.

I used to hear stories all the time about Dodge not making crew cabs because Ford had a controlling stake in Cummins so to get the engines they weren't allowed to make crew cabs. Sound like nonsense to me. According to Wikipedia the crew cabs were dropped in 85 to make room on the assembly line for the Dakota and just not brought back.

That is definitely a working truck and not some museum piece. That will be a good restoration.

That is cool. Kinda like the first Toyota "4Runner" In 1981, 82, 83 Winnebago Industries converted regular cab Toyota 4x4 pickups into what was called the Toyota Trekker. They removed the bed and cut the back of the cab out of the pickup and added a rear clip that was all fiberglass and had a back seat. You could remove the cap part if you wanted but it was a pain to do, like 20 bolts and the seals that would never seal back properly once you took it off. And the first real 4Runner came out in 1984. They were really cool, I had an 82 model and I loved the little thing, but one day I was going to back it under a large grandfather oak and one of its huge limbs was lower than I thought and it hit the back and busted the fiberglass really bad. One too many Budwiezers and a heavy foot did her in. lol.

@MuscleRodShop I have an honest question to ask of you after I seen you build the rear Cuda Fenders and how much work that was and again point made if any parts can't be wrecked on that Cuda those were on that short list. Old Muscle cars and trucks original have aged quite a bit we've all seen you do repairs. My question is how could we recreate new body panels or larger parts more effectively? could you use a laser measure of a part and make a mold from those measurements to make copies of body panels with a press or a stamp machine? I remember a few years back Ford did sell old style Mustang bodies and I thought that was really cool! I'm just curious what ways to upscale and produce all sorts of old cars and trucks a business or even one person could do to bring back old body styles back. Hood, trunk, fenders, roof, doors, side panels maybe break up the other complex parts on the main body to be smaller and weld it together with support to make the big piece overall. The 1995 Dodge dash was made of plastic that tends to self destruct. All is takes in a bump to cause it to crack.

I have been planning this type of build on an early model Chevy truck. I want to take a 67 through 72 C or K 10 and make it a crew cab, using the same model Suburban; ending up with a (3 door) Crew Cab, long bed. Once the body and frame are done, I would like to stuff a turbo (possibly twin) Cummins in front of an Allison. Any suggestions on what to watch out for or guidance on how to complete this project with as little headache as possible?

Honestly it looks like even when it was new that conversion was crap. The Dakota window looks terrible. Obviously wrong size for the truck.

I don't know why people get it wrong. That is a third Gen. 1st is from 1974 to 1980 and 2nd Gen is from 1981 to 1993 in the USA and 1995 in Canada. I have been working on all of them since they were new. And I don't want some stupid ass say we'll they didn't call them a ram until 1981 because they are the same damm trucks and Ramchargers but the body lines changed in 1981 and then to keep up with other companies they started calling it a ram too make it sound tougher but of course there's a lot of dummies out there that are pretty stupid. So now you know and you can call it what it is a 3rd generation
