2S3 Akatsiya 152mm ICM Barrage: Combat Mission Cold War

First turn barrage with 6 152mm 2S3s firing cluster HE munitions at an unfortunate US Mechanised platoon in foxholes.
This is a weapons effects demo: being capable of penetrating and knocking out static, unresponsive targets does not necessarily translate into battlefield effectiveness against a thinking, moving enemy who shoots back. The damage caused is representative rather than definitive- strange things can happen!

An important note is that the infantry didn't run away but stay in the foxholes, drastically reducing casualty chance. Compare to other artillery tests, where Pixeltruppen who ditched their trenches would quickly catch shrapnel.

Or getting a direct hit like what happened in the Naval bombardment episode Then again that one was deleting fox holes anyway

Guessing the smaller size of the submunitions really impacts their effectiveness against dug in units.

Yes and no. You have a higher chance of a direct hit, but a lower chance of near misses being effective
@Tragisty

Definitely find the sublets of the nato artillery to be more reliable mostly due to increased numbers meaning more chance of direct impact.

Definitely.

Also, dual purpose munitions. The Soviet clusters are HE only, so you get just about zero effect against armoured vehicles.

@@mumblerinc.6660 yeah the DIRCM (close enough) is fantastic for defensive purposes against the red wave.

Wow. I expected far more damage

To be fair, this platoon is a lot more spread out than in the WW2 tests

@@usuallyhapless9481 Ah, good point. I suppose all that suppression is still nothing to shake a stick at as well.

US Army Infantrymen: Incoming Artillery! take your head down and cover!
@nathanwailes
@nathanwailes Месяц назад
I feel like it would've been more realistic if all the infantry immediately took cover as soon as the first rounds hit. IMO they should only resist taking cover if they have reason to believe enemy forces are nearby and more of a danger than potential additional incoming artillery.

I'm unsure what the niche of ICM is. I think unitary HE with ground/air burst fuzing is more effective
@usuallyhapless9481
@usuallyhapless9481 2 месяца назад
The niche is not having figured out how to make DPICM yet.
@Temeluchas
@Temeluchas 2 месяца назад
@@usuallyhapless9481 Not really. DPICM ammunition for 120-mm 2S9 was adopted at about the same time as 152-mm ICM. Why? Nobody knows for sure. The leading theory is, AFAIK, that MLRS were designated for DPICM delivery (every system, starting from Grad, had DPICM munitions). And VDV, the main user of 2S9, couldn't rely on MLRS that much. But that's just the theory.

I suspect that it might have to do with cost: manufacturing a few million cluster munitions for the 152mm artillery park of the Soviet Union was never going to be cheap, and the main intent is to either destroy or suppress, something which ICM functions fine at. Also to note, artillery in CM tends to underperform compared to actual observed effect of similar artillery in combat, so there is that…
@HippoBean
@HippoBean 2 месяца назад
@@zanaduz2018 Yeah, as powerful as artillery already is in game, in real life a direct hit on a tank by a decent sized shell would easily take it out, but in CM most of the time you'll just get some track and subsystem damage, at least in the modern games

Yeah soviet cluster is not great. Standart HE with airburst if possible is a way to go

@@skyria8302 d30 with 420 he shells are also very solid just by sheer quantity of shells you can drop on the energy. 30-40m of non stop light barrage
