In this video I install 2x6 tube in place of the rocker panel on my 1998 Jeep Cherokee Xj. I removed the round tube style sliders in place of much stronger sliders. This also gained me a little more ground clearance with the body.
I had some help with the install
I used Pennsylvania Steel pasteel.com/ for my steel.
I also ordered some Steel It from TMR customs www.tmrcustoms.com/products/s...

I agree. I need a bender. I really want to do tube doors as well. I've got some big things coming though where I should probably hold off on fenders. I might make them and then a few months later have to do them all over again. But I eventually want some fenders.

Are you welding the sheet metal with gas or innershield? Best is with gas and thin wire like .020 trying to weld it with .030 which would be good for your structural steel is hard. Welding thin metal to thick metal in general is tricky. Anyways looks good I think I'll put some on my jeep
@FMJeeping
@FMJeeping 2 года назад
I tried using .025 solid which is generally the smallest my machine can use. In hindsight I could have cut long and folded the metal over (like a lip) and hammer it flat to double the thickness .

I must say your front Drivers side tire is sticking out of the Wheel Well much more then the Passenger side. I think you should have a Line up done. The Higher you lift the Jeep the more the Track Bar tends to pull the front Axle to the Drivers side. My Jeep XJ is just a Street ride but i put new springs in the front to lift it 2 inches and had to install a New Adjustable Track Bar in it and had a Professional 4 Wheel Line up done. Something is going on with that front Axle or could be just a bad lower Ball Joint on the Drivers side, it's hard to say but it's just something about that Wheel. I can see it when you have the Jeep in the Driveway behind you as your talking. Live and Learn i went to a Trade School for Metal Fab. from Grade 8 to 12 and was a Structural Ship Fitter for about 20 yr.'s Retired now and i'm still Learning. Look's like your doing a Good Job to me wish i had your get up and go mine got up and went lol.
@FMJeeping
@FMJeeping 3 года назад
Nice observation. I'm maxing out the ability of my current trac bar. I have been for some time. I am currently building a set of axles and will be completely redoing the trac bar setup. The current setup is more for light duty use and I can tell it flexes too much when I wheel. Nice catch.

Thanks for your videos! They inspire me to do all the mods on my xj myself. I just finished replacing alle the floorboards and am now ready to do the sliders. Just one question. It looks like you welded the top of the slider onto the body of the jeep. Did you leave the bottom open?
@FMJeeping
@FMJeeping 2 года назад
I did stich in on the bottom where I could. A lot of the metal was gone, but I was able to put a few small welds on the pinch seam and hold it to the 2*6.

I just got done with frame stiffeners and replacing the rocker panels with 2x6. I went with 1/4" wall tube and made supports out of 3/16" 2x6. I also did 4 supports. I think it turned out really well and it should hold up really well. How are your's holding up?
@FMJeeping
@FMJeeping Год назад
Sweet ! I just thought that 1/4 would be much heavier. The 3/16 on my 2*6 was just right. I know a lot of people run 1/4 and do just fine. So far my 3/16ths rockers are great. I've been hammering on them a bunch and they have a couple of scrapes but are still solid

Yo bud. Was thinking about doin this with my rig. I appreciate you putting this video out for us to watch. I have a couple questions for ya if that’s ok. How did the welds hold? Touch any rocks with them yet? Did you have mig hooked up to 220? Or 110? How did it do burning into the 3/16? Thanks in advance for your time! Happy wheeling!
@FMJeeping
@FMJeeping 3 года назад
The welds hold fine. I've put the whole rig's weight on them. The sliders are tied into the pinch seam, other parts of the body and then the unibody. I have 220. It burned the 3/16 easily. A 140 can do this project. You will have to turn up the heat a little bit. Anything else I can help you with?

Good biuld . Does this cause any issues with the body being welded now to the frame. When i biult a custom cage for my cj several people said dont weld the body to the cage where i went through the body into the frame because it could Torque the body out of shape and cause problems with doors and things not lining up even had one guy tell me that could crack the windshield. I see this 2x6 rocker thing all over so just wondering . Anyone has a answer i'd appreciate it
@FMJeeping
@FMJeeping Год назад
Adding cages and 2*6 rockers will actually strengthen the body. I can tell you it was a night and day difference with just stiffeners. I was able to flex out and open my doors and hatch. Before the stiffeners, I wasn't able to do that. The cage and the rock sliders stiffen the chassis. I was told that welding cages to frames is safer and stronger than bodies or tubs. The bodies flex more than the frame. Which is why there are bushings between the frame and the tub.
@dexterkardas6559
@dexterkardas6559 Год назад
@@FMJeeping yes i agree also i didn't realize that the jk is a unibody. So the frame is the body. Its my sons jeep. I think this is exactly what he needs. I ended up tying my cage into the frame through 2" hole i cut in the body . Also i attached the front and rear seats and the seat restraints to the cage with custom brackets and lynch pins. The best part of that is it makes working under the dash so much easier . I pull the seats in seconds and can layout . Thank you for the video and getting back to me. ITS A JEEP THING
