Many people ask if a generator or battery is going to make more sense. Really, at the end of the day they don't really do the same thing. A solar panel system creates the power and the battery stores the power for later. A generator, on the other hand, only creates power in the moment when needed. The stored energy is either in fuel you store yourself of the natural gas line it's connected to. The solar and battery save you money and provide security while a generator just provides security, but at a cost. Each have their pros and cons.

Inverter generators are very quiet, especially when not under full load. I don't plan on running my house as usual during an extended outage. I will keep the food cold, have the internet and TV on along with some lights. I have a mix of solar and battery storage as well as an inverter generator. The solar and batteries will run fine when the sun is out. If not, the generator can be used to quickly charge the batteries in about 1.5 hours. This makes using the generator more efficient as it is not constantly running. You could go days like this running the generator intermittently instead of full time. We camp a lot so everyone is prepared not to have all the luxuries sometimes

Good standby generators should only need to be run once a month or so. And you should test them at least monthly, regardless.

Most permanent generators want to run every other day or so

Batteries never recoup their cost, unless you can't backfeed the grid like in Hawaii...

It all depends on the utility’s net metering agreement. Sometimes yes, sometimes no
