Kiss should have never got rid of Ace he was their best guitar player. I would be like megadeth getting rid of Dave Mustaine megadeth just would not be megadeth anymore.
@@patrickshannon6135 Unfortunately they were tired of picking him up off the floor just to play. Stardom and R&R always led to over indulgence. And know Im going to listen to Kiss's 1st album.
@@thomasjoseph2050 I feel you man, I'm 49 my first concert I saw was in 1987. I saw metallica at master of puppets tour never forget it, I still remember it like yesterday.
"We gotta little surprise for you tonite -- we're gonna turn the microphone over ta... ACE FREHLEY --SHOCK ME!!!" First record I ever bought , ahh the feels...
I'll never forget that introduction to Ace from paul.at twelve years old.abd black kids that grew up on rock music.and still love it.we were way ahead of our time.
I"m 52 years old and remember like it was yesterday when my parents bought me "ALIVE" for xmas because they couldn't get Dynasty as it was sold out, I"m so glad it was sold out , "ALIVE" blew my mind and started the total obsession with wanting to play guitar just like Ace Frehley, and opened my interest to all the early Kiss albums and the love of playing guitar.
Ace is why I picked up a guitar. And I had to have a Les Paul. This is my favorite channel. Thank you again for bringing all these great players to the forefront. Awsome stuff! 🤘🏼👍🏼
For me, Ace is the reason that a Les Paul is what a guitar is supposed to look like, and the reason I had to own one. I remember drawing them as an 9 year old back in 79. Hilarious! My brother and I had tennis racket guitars and Alive II on vinyl, too :)
Those three were huge to me too! Right before I discovered Kiss i was intriguied by Brian May. Right after Kiss it was Alex Lifeson, then Eddie! What time for rock guitar connoisseurs!
What I think also gets missed with Ace is just how powerful his rhythm playing is, too. When Gene and Paul are running around the stage, it falls to the lead guitarist and the drummer in Kiss to hold the songs together. Ace's tone was also excellent.
I get that neither Alive or Alive II is purely live. Most live albums from this time period were all fixed up in the studios before being released, I get it! I still love these performances
Thank you so much,Ace influence me pick up guitar at 17 years old in 1983 and got my first les paul tobacco burst in 1985 used $600.00 with chainsaw case,I was still learning and getting feeling and emotions in my playing and learning songs from 70s and 80s it very long learning process and very worth it,Iam still playing and iam still learning songs and licks and chords, Thank you, for doing this video and hope you do Ace Frehley 2. licks. and bring me back the joyful memories listen Kiss Alive 2 first album ever bought at age 12 yrs old, Thank you David, so much again keep on rocking and rolling, Thanks you.
Who was influenced by Ace Frehley? Here's a little list - Dimebag Darrell, Zakk Wylde, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, and I could add to the list until I'm blue in the face. Now he's probably not considered the best guitarist but the most influential. If you listen to Kiss Alive listen to all of his leads. He's got great solos on that album. No Ace is not a shredder at all, but in his early years he can play some really great riffs and solos. a couple great riffs- parasite, cold gin. Pentatonic riff that's in love gun I could go on and on. Thanks for the video David!
Ace Frehley is God! I am a HUGE Kiss fan, had my walls and even the ceiling covered with Kiss posters as a kid. Love his song writing and singing as well!
When I was 15 and bought Dressed To Kill. All my friends who were big Zeppelin, & Allman Brothers fans laughed at me. After Alive 1 they all wanted to go see them with me. Still listen to all 3 to this day.
Great lesson. As a little kid, I’m pretty sure I wore out Destroyer and Rock and Roll Over. Those were the first two Kiss albums I owned and they were pure, visceral energy. Your closing remarks are spot on and for me, those ideas also apply to singers.
If memory serves me correct, Ace also "pick tapped" on his Shock Me solo on ALIVE II before Mr. Van Halen hit the scene!!! Tasty licks is how I like them!!!
Ha, definitely! My best friend and I would go straight to the stereo in his living room after school, fire up Dressed To Kill and jump up and down on the couch playing air guitar. We were like 13, they were huge.
I'm claiming this as a great video Even though I haven't watched it yet! Thanks for doing the ace video. Ace of the reason I started playing guitar. Aces influence more people to play guitar than any other guitarist. Now to watch the video :-)
Great lesson, thanks! Ace played lead guitar very lyrically, he was also very dramatic with his lead lines, even though some might consider him a little basic and repetitive, Well, he took basic and repetitive into the stratosphere emotionally, naw, into outer space!
First stadium gig I went to was the Dynasty tour in 1980 at the ripe age of 12. The world changed for me completely that night and although I didn't start playing till I was 15, I haven't stopped. For me guitar doesn't need to be complicated and fast, or flashy and shreddy just fun. Ace's playing always sounded like good fun to me.
Ace had the same effect on me as a kid. I was 12 when I went to see them in '77 on their Love Gun tour. I left knowing I I was going to play guitar. Literally been playing ever since. In fact, my band jammed today (we rocked "C'mon and Love Me"!).
Quite simply, in my lifetime, one of the most, if the most influential guitar players of the 70's. Respect? Ace could care less...he was never better than most players from his day....Page, Beck...Ace could not pick up their jock, but he was good...damn good, and better than most. His legacy in his influence... he is the only reason I play guitar...
I really never listened to Kiss growing up as a guitar player....I thought they were a joke....Thanks for enlightening me and really enjoy watching your channel....You are a "GURU of Guitar Knowledge"
Kiss Alive from '75 influenced a lot players from that era. HIs tone made that album. "Rock and Roll all night and party everyday", what a message to send a 10 year old out onto the world.
I'm with you about Ace's influence. I picked up a guitar 40+ years ago because of Ace and Destroyer album. Technically he's not a Randy, Eddie, George, Jake et al but without him, guitar wouldn't be the same!
Rock and roll all night , studio version has no guitar solo. Live version though does. Kiss alive 2, Right after Detroit Rock City, when the opening note slowly creeps in then harmonicly feeds back into King of the Nighttime World still gives me chills to this day. Best 2 show opening songs 👍
I can honestly say if it wasn’t for Kiss and Ace, I may not have ever picked up a guitar. In 1977 as a nine year old, the impact was like a meteor crashing to earth when I first heard them. My sister belonged to one of those record clubs (Columbia House?). They sent her Destroyer by mistake and she gave it to me (her favorite band was the Carpenters). Absolutely changed my world. That was the spark-the gasoline happened a few years later with RR and VH. Thanks David for reminding me that Ace was the spark (literally) ⚡️
Ace is the man! As a kid I actually intended to be drummer, always air drumming while my buddies played tennis rackets. When I was 12 I saw KISS on the Love Gun tour and my life was changed immediately. Long before that show was over, I was a guitar player at heart. Been playing guitar ever since. I'm 56 years old, play guitar every day. Sure EVH, Rhoads, Yngwie etc eventually came along to inspire and influence me, but I still use the licks I picked up from Ace as a kid. And I still feel like a rock star when I crank my amp and jam along to Deuce off Alive! Thanks Ace, for a lifetime of loud, dirty, greasy inspiration!
I was a 8 yr old kid in the mid seventies, listening to Kiss in my bedroom everyday. Bought every album I could get living in small town Oklahoma. Ace Frehley was my very first musical influence ever, and I still absolutely love his licks! He just doesn’t get the credit he deserves. He’s one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time. Imo.
Ace would tell you: "It's the way I do what I do, Curly!" Seriously, that picture of Ace in the 'Evolution Of KISS' booklet in Alive II was the final straw to me switching from drums to guitar in 1978. That pic of ace holding his Les Paul being bathed in light - that was it for me! I wanted to be up there and gave up the drums for guitar. Little did I know, at the same time, this dude named Eddie Van Halen had done the same thing years earlier with the instrument switch! haha!
Great lesson as always, Dave. I hope the younger players appreciate Ace’s contribution to Rock and the instrument. That Paige lick is way cool and I dig the space invaders on the laptop 👍🏾
Love your lesson man! No matter how many years I've been playing. I still manage to learn something new from your lessons that I didn't know before! Awesome!🤘 Thanks!
Ace was the dude back then. I remember being bummed out my parents got me KISS Alive! instead of Alive II, until I listened to Alive! I’ll be trying these licks.
Ace is basically the only reason I wanted to be a musician. He was my first and ony real guitar hero, and I have never looked back. His solos and the way he plays them, the vibrato and this intense aggression is just mesmerizing. I am now 47 years old, and I play in a band myself, in a completely different genre, but to me, it all started with Ace. And there is only one way for me to have a good time when looking back at times,; pop a beer or twelve and and sit back and enjoy these first Kiss albums :)
Eric Clapton is quoted sayin Ace was one of the best guitarist he's ever seen. Some very high praise Indeed. Ace was a blues guitarist in spandex and his tone and memorable solos stood out. Millions picked up a guitar becuz of Ace. Those dinosaur bends of his were and are amazing.
Thank you for this! ACE is my guitar hero, the reason I play guitar, I wanted to be a lead guitar player like Ace... I agree so much with this video, he is a legend in his own time and highly under rated, and should not be ... he did influence most of today's players.
Every guitarist, songwriter, and producer should watch every single one of your videos, no matter what level they think they have achieved. I'm constantly and sincerely humbled by your work and knowledge of the instrument and music in general. Your generosity with it is also astounding. Thank you so much for all you do.
That second lick made me smile as it took me back to my playroom circa 1978 jammin' to ALIVE II with my guitar (tennis racket) as a rowdy 8 yr old. I have loved Ace my whole life man and I really enjoyed this video.
Very nice and well deserved tribute to one of the most underrated influential guitarists! Excellent instruction placing the context and influences without being pedantic. You have a new subscriber! One of the best I’ve seen on YT!
Detroit Rock City, 59 now and it's still an anthem, very exciting to play, as a keyboardist, i respect guitarist and their dedication, Mr. Ace, thanks for the memories. Great video
Thanx for this! Unless you grew up in that period Ace's influence is hard to understand honestly. His impact on my generation is unprecedented and the reason I not only got into Hard Rock/ Metal but also wanted to be a musician as well.
Trying to copy Ace is surprisingly hard, mostly because his timing and rhythms are pretty intricate. I think that's largely why I never tire of hearing his solos. They're rhythmically interesting.
Great video dude! I'm surprised you didn't mention mention Ace *tapping* during that one section of the solo -- sounds like he's tapping with the pick edge
Back in the mid 80's I used to go to the Marquee club in Wardour St. and watch Dumpy's Rusty Nuts. Back then you remembered as much as you could then spent all night learning what you'd seen and heard. Dumpy actually played that hyper-pentatonic lick and I've played it ever since! I never knew where it came from :o)
Funny you mention “hybrid” pentatonics... I’ve actually been playing it this way so long I consider it my “thing”. Much love, found you on facebook and im hard to convince but youve earned my sub! Love your content! Tysm!
Melody within the melody...Ace's solos are tasteful, nasty and have feeling. Well done!!! Sir Brewster never cease to amaze. I got some serious catching up to do...thanx!!!
Thank you for giving Ace the respect he deserves. So many young shredders dismiss him. And that's why their playing has no feel. His solos are often little compositions within the song. You can play his stuff with no backing, and it still sounds musical and good. You can tell its him. I love your channel!
