Joe Walsh is one of my favorite guitarist! He plays with a lot of emotion, and his phrasing is so melodic too! One of the best. Thanks for this episode!
I seen Joe for the first time with the James Gang in Detroit and I had not heard guitar played like that. I said to my buddy, where'd he come from? He plays like he learned hidden away in the backwoods somewhere! I was his fan by the time he finished his first song! Awesome history of way cool licks and guitar style.
Followed Joe since 1969. Great all-round musician and song writer. And I'm also a big fan of Barnstorm, the whole concept and the contributions by numerous great players. This work really launched Joe into new dimensions of his career. Thanks Joe. The player you smoke the drinker you get.
Joe Walsh like some of his contemporaries has such a distinctive style it commands the listener's attention. Not by technical flash but by pure emotion. He's a legend!
Because Im only 62 I missed James Gang first time around but was fortunate to see them on a reunion tour in 2006. Absolutely incredible. Every lick, every beat, it was all there. No fancy colored lights, none of that. Just pure rock and roll.
Man, you are really ticking all the boxes lately. My favourites keep coming! I love Joe for his chord work, for slide as well as lovely bends. He has it all in buckets. I also prefer his solo music and The James Gang has some killer tunes. Now to watch your video...I know I’m gonna like it😎 You are gonna have to make a "Part II"!!
I've never been taught how to play any Joe walsh (he's friggin awesome) anyway I ve been playing stuff like life's been good .,walk away all by ear/memory .,I'm 58 and Joe is very influential for me....thank you for showing the right way man...rock on brother
Love Joe Walsh, he connects to the listener, in a simple and very effective way. Expession is everything. I play in an Eagles tribute band in Australia, and i get to learn a lot of his later work, and i love it. Awesome segmant AGAIN! Thanks
It took me playing all the 80s stuff to realize I missed all the tasty stuff like Joe. So I backed the truck up and now I'm basking in all this good stuff. 👍
A few years back, myself and four of my friends took ecstasy one night and jammed to what seemed like millions of songs. At one point during the journey, I put on this exact live video on the tv screen, and we all lost our minds. One of the guys there that night got married about a year ago, and the groomsmen blared this song on the trolley headed into the church. This lesson brought back some fond memories haha. Joe Walsh is a beast.
Joe is one of my main influences as a guitarist. He has so much feel and taste, he IS emotion coming at you loud and clear!!! Joe is so unique in many ways. When I hear "Walk Away" and the unreal lead and tone comin` at ya, all I can say is "How ya doin`" LOL Joes way of introducing himself. Love ya Joe!!
Great guitar lesson I'm Joe Walsh's guitar playing😅 keep because musicians like us keep on learning I'm a Joe Walsh. And pulled up with his guitar and and Joe asked me what my favorite songs before he started the concert speechless and then I said walkaway funk 49 Rocky do all said you got it you did marvelously perfect and flawless it was just drinking days but he nailed it perfectly❤❤❤
I loved what Joe said recently to his audience; "It was absolutely a *LOT* more fun being in my 20s during the 70s - than it *IS* being in my 70s during the 20s!"
I still listen to James Gang regularly. Joe's playing is funky, chicken pickin, blusey, with great slide, with offbeat melody lines. Listening to them doing The Bomber live, with his echoplex throwing his notes all over the room was mesmerizing! Probably next to seeing the Beatles live I would put James Gang, The Eagles and The Who at a close number Two! Love Joe!
I KNEW you were going to do Joe Walsh soon when you mentioned him during the Ace 3 for all! Check out "The smoker you drink, the player you get" album. It's a classic. I grew up on it at 6 yrs old, (thanks dad) 1973👍👍
Great lesson on a master. Fun fact... for the Joe Walsh bending lick he is quoted calling it "the lick I stole from jimmy page". You can hear that lick on many zep tunes.
Great choice! Joe does some crazy licks in Don Henley's 'Dirty Laundry' that I'd love someone to break down. Another great choice for a '3 for all' would be Elliot Easton of The Cars.
David, your vibrato technique is spot on. Beautifully controlled and accurate, and you never miss pitch on the bend. There are quite a few other “instructors” here on RU-vid who would be well advised to learn from you in order to eliminate their awful frantic string shake.
I played with Joe in the 80s. He used an MXR Phase 90. They came out in 1974 and he used one on quite a few albums. But don’t forget that he used and toured with a Fender Vibratone (like a Leslie). The Mini Vent does that sound. Everything he did had rotating speaker on it, from the James Gang until now. Cheers. Max 😁👍
Walsh and David Gilmour are completely different guitar players . .Walsh is great but he plays nothing like Gilmour and vice versa A better fit would be calling Walsh America's Version of Paul Kossoff from Free . Walsh can't touch Gimour for melodic phrasing or Fluidity .Gilmour has no equal for that type of Gilmour
you're totally right idk what it is but joe walsh has a special quality that makes him amazing. he can make a guitar sound good. I'm a shredder I'm trying to get more educated in blues and I'm finding out it's harder than I thought the phrasing is tricky and it takes a lot of practice to play well . but I'm putting in the effort hopefully soon my blues will catch up with the rest of my playing.
Life's Been Good, Rocky Mountain Way ... epic songs all the way. Joe Walsh slide playing is in a class of its own. Listen to Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get. I saw Joe Walsh play with The Eagles at UoF. The Dude of Rock N Roll.
To me, Joe has a playing style that highlights transient delay! Some call it pick scrape or expression. He's said so himself, " Tone comes from the picking hand!" Steve Cropper is another Great artist and example of this style. Well done and thanks for sharing brother!
Man about a month ago i was watching some old Joe Walsh video's and the dude inspired me to go buy my first electric guitar. He is truly a legend. I got a Epiphone Les Paul and one of the first video's i come across was yours. I'm looking forward to learning to play it and ill be looking threw your videos to help me.
IThe James Gang, Barnstorm, all of the pre-eagles Joe Walsh is very specific to my musical memory, college in Vermont and just this onslaught of amazing music, lots of talented friends. all sharing a desire to turn each other on to good music. I too remember hearing funk 48 for the first time and wearing that homemade cassette tape out. The tape had select James Gang songs on one side, and sort of a best of mix of Heads Hands and Feet--who also blew my mind on the other. Considering what was on the radio in the 90s, which was actually a super musically rich decade (the tone on the first Black Crowes album? dang) ....this was a departure, but we were kids that practiced Allman Brothers, early ZZ Top, even some Heads Hands and Feet in lieu of contemporary choices. I swear I like viewing these videos sometimes just to be able to listen to someone else geek out over these musicians that had such a big impact on me. Listening to you share you knowledge, learnin us all a little sumthin, feels more like hangin out with that musical family of friends, full of good stuff, but nice n laid back.
Joe Walsh is a great guitarist seen him many times never with the Eagles, He interacts with the audience in a great way. Can you please do one on Allen Collins licks he,so underrated. I love his over bends and also the best Duane Allman if you could. I love your videos
When I first listened to my 12 inch single version of rocky mountain way (which had turn to stone on the flip side), I convinced myself that Joe was using a slide for most of those licks, It wasn't until I saw him on T.V. that I realised that a lot of them were actually precision bends. Thanks again for another great video David.
Yes! This is exactly what I was talking about in the Ace Frehley video. Listen to how these licks are constructed. There so so much to each pick besides just a scale pattern. So musical. Love his playing! Thanks for the great video!
Oh hell yeah David! Another one of MY favorites as well, and no..I know him not from the Eagles! Old timer here, anyway..you pointed to the Barnstorm cover you have on the wall and it dawned on me that you seem to have a collection of MANY different items you've hung there and change, accordingly. Cool! Thanks for this and ALL your shows, time, lessons and listening to you is EZ for me and good pointers that fell out of my head over the years! Cheers! Rock on!
That first James Gang record is mandatory listening. Walsh is quite a character... Even after drugs and alcohol aside. Check out his string changing video. Haha
Joe walsh has always been in my top 5 guitarists of all time. As soon as you hear him you know its him. he is dave gilmourish is with the way he makes a few notes sound absolutely awesome. such a great feel and hard to replicate.
This was fantastic to watch. It’s so great to see people analyzing his guitar licks other than funk #49! Loved how you broke down that video from ‘72 👏
Love his playing since hearing walk away. Would have loved to hear how he and rory together would have sounded. By the way thanks for the insight 🙏 and lessons. 🙏
Just recently worked out the Hotel California solo, and I love the way the 'Joe Walsh lick' in this solo comes back down on the the b string below from f to e after the bend up to the b from the a on the e string of the same bend motion! really cool. I gonna listen to some more Joe Walsh now cheers!
Joe really has his fundamentals mastered. Too many guitarists try to jump into advanced methods too early. Myself included. Try taking a few notes from a pentatonic scale and see how many riffs you can come up with, try some crazy funky timing. Wish I knew all this when I had time. I have many things in common with Joe, but the main thing is I shouldn't be alive after all the crazy things I did. LOL
Great job Dave. If you're so inclined a Tommy Bolin episode would really be cool. Especially stuff like Ode to G , Crazed Fandango & Quadrant 4. Whatever though it's all amazing, Thanks!
