Boy wouldn't that be an amazing Pocket 6k camera?! I really hope Blackmagic is listening! It would be great to also see it in a form factor similar to the Zcams.
Blackmagic if you're reading this, I am a potential customer with the 25 likes over here, so count 25 cameras sold, please proceed with that the bois are saying
Would really love to have box shape because most of these cameras are going to be rigged out anyway to be used on projects. Current shape is kind of uncomfortable to hold especially if you have put lot of weight on it with cage/vmount/monitor ect. And the body is already so wide that if i add any side handles for better grip, it becomes ridicilously wide.
That's a dream camera! Also hope for a box shape micro cinema camera 4k. Love the pocket 4k but would love to have it more rig-friendly. I don't mind having the mft with the metabones but of course a at least super 35 and rf-mount would be killer! I hope they can bring out a new global shutter sensor with good dr and color too. To rival the komodo :p The komodo I think takes to long to start, a bm is way quicker! :)
@@THEDPJOURNEY of course I’m having fun speculating here, but I can’t see Panasonic adopting “traditional” phase detect ... but who know? ... I don’t know nothing for sure ... lol
I'm a proud Blackmagic Pocket 6K owner and I must say I sometimes have this love-hate relationship with it. The poor battery, no IBIS, unusable AF, and EF mount (huge flange distance), ridiculous crop factor when shooting higher frame rates, etc are some of the biggest down sides of this camera. I honestly don't like nitpicking but the value this camera brings for the price is amazing. However, I really wish the next Blackmagic camera has 1. A Box body like ZCAM/Panasonic BGH1 because that's quite easy to balance on a gimbal than the current design. 2. A Full Frame sensor! Global shutter please! 3. IBIS and Auto Focus like the Komodo 4. RF MOUNT!!!! 5. A better battery option than the current one! Priced at 3000-4000$ would be MAD!
All the reasons you mentioned in the 6k are the reasons why I held back... but I LOVE its color science. Great suggestions you have there. Box shape is def a great idea
Battery life is okay. Try original pocket. It's like 2 minutes. 6K can easily get you 30 full minutes. The only really stupid thing is that huge ass ugly EF mount when it could be RF. And the wide ass body is a big issue when using gimbals.
All those are great points, but I would seriously just be happy with a pocket 4K or 6K in a boxy body with built-in ND filters and IBIS. I would take either an EF mount or even micro 4/3 mount- neither of those mounts is a deal breaker for me. I think form factor and ND filters would trump everything else.
"A carefully calculated gut feeling." I love people who use language with creativity and precision, and especially when they are able to do so in a second language.
The only thing that excites me is the gh6. They fix the AF problem and it is perfect for almost every kind of work. At least for me I would have one camera that works for shooting weddings and that works for RU-vid content. For extra points if they added an electronic ND filter in there, it would be over the top amazing. C'mon Panasonic I'm rooting for ya.
For me, a photo or video is about the emotions and the story it tells me. Not about the dynamic range, sharpness, pixels or the bokeh. These days, its all about the specs. Sadly, consumers are falling for it and companies continue to make millions. Like someone said : "Don't wait for the perfect moment. Take the moment and make it perfect".
Complaints about the "pocket" a) the form factor b) we need to be able to turn the rear screen off c) a mirrorless mount would give us way more lens options. In the future I'd like to see a version in a cube shape like Z Cam and RED Komodo, with lots of mounting points. Also, turn the big screen into a detachable field monitor with signal and power supplied by the body and ship it with the camera.
New Blackmagic 6k Full fame? Oh yes! With all the features he mentioned? I will purchase without a doubt. We can only hope that Black magic would listen to us.
Looks like the Pocket 6k Pro is still Super35, still has an EF mount, but now has internal IRNDs, uses NP-F batteries, has a 1500Nit HDR tilting screen, Gen 5 color science and only costs $2500. By far the lowest price cinema camera with these features. There is also an optional new battery grip and EVF. I think the reason it doesn't have a RF mount is likely two fold. First is licensing cost, and second it now incorporates IRNDs so is using that additional space granted by the mount for something.
Yeah teh numbers you see from your side are less accurate than the ones I see actually. There were close to 50 views when I got my first comment actually.... And yeah BM6KFF is my FIRST CHOICE
@@THEDPJOURNEY Indeed, I'm 22yr, and I feel very blessed to have all the resources and tools I have to choose from! I'm sure everyone else feels the same way.
I don't think black magic will come out with a full frame. To go full frame and maintain their dynamic range would require the camera to be bigger with more cooling. IBIS and auto focus wont be a thing with them either. Their price point and edge while being a much smaller company than Sony, Canon and Panasonic is to focus on image quality, color and recording specs. Added features would require new R&D they would have to invest, risk, and raise the prices much higher.
Hello. I guess and I can bet that the gh6 will not have the high definition EVF. It will have the one of the S5.. Sure also that Panasonic will not succeed in offering phase detection AF.
We use a bunch of Production, Pocket and Micro 4K BlackMagic's and love them... in-studio. However, the BlackMagic AF is unusable in most real world situations, the stabilization is out of 2010, and after our team have used the A7SIII in the field for just a few months, between the complete lack of noise, amazing AF and gorgeous filmic look in Resolve, we are moving away from BlackMagic and our last Canon to SONY's and our newest upgrade to an ARRI LF. The Venice and the A7SIII are the only units we've used that can be easily and seamlessly graded with the LF in almost any lighting condition or dynamic shooting situation. In fact, the SIII does a few things at lower noise levels than the ARRI. Given that the little SONY is about $136K less than the new LF not even including the almost $300K in LPL lenses, that is amazing! Obviously, none of these yet compare with the high-end ARRI 65's, but the completely geared-out SONY's with amazing glass and all, are less than a day's rental of a typical ARRI 65 rental drop with just a couple lenses and a Media Station. Plenty of great movies continue to be made with much less than a SONY A7SIII, like we used to do.
Funny you say that. We are just finishing-up our 5th Hollywood film, done using a range of Sony and ARRI gear. We have 6 mounted and 4 drone A7SIII's. Before going this direction on an $85 million production, we blind-compared test footage we shot over 2 weeks on all the gear. In high lighting, the Canon's and Blackmagic held-up well, other than DOF. However, in high contrast and low lighting, there is currently no other reasonably-priced substitute for the Sony's. We do have a 2 year old Venice on set also, which grades very well with the ARRI also. This was the first one, and was done using the prior Sony A7S camera series. www.cined.com/hollywood-movie-shot-fullframe-mirrorless-camera/
We need an update to the Blackmagic Micro Cinem Camera but with a larger body (like Komodo or Z-com size) but with the internals of the BMPCC 6k... that’s all I want ..
Blackmagic needs to fix their form-factor! No matter what's inside, the shoe shape is a deal-breaker for me. My dream camera would be a blackmagic in a RED form-factor (box, side handle, top screen, battery in the back). Great video btw!
Honestly the 12800 base second ISO usually is quite a bit of a disadvantage, since everything above ISO 3200 is quite unusable till you reach ISO 12800, which means you'll need either fast lenses or super strong ND filters.
I have a Panasonic GH5 and I am interested in the GH6 but I may not upgrade when it eventually comes out if it has 8K as I don't need it, nor do I think its the best for a smaller sensor for what you said, more noise and that could mean less useable dynamic range but also diffraction would happen at wider apertures with smaller pixels, which isn't what I want for landscapes and macro where I need a big depth of field. All I would like for a GH6 for video is an update to the GH5s with IBIS, full V-log with more dynamic range, non reflective brighter screen and ProRes RAW output since all of Panasonics FF cameras have RAW output as do other FF cameras released in the past year or so and the GH cameras are their top of the line MFT cameras for video and they could really benefit from it. They probably won't change their focusing drastically but I do see it having some small improvements. If they can also add it, an electronic variable ND (I think the flange distance of MFT or the small size makes it difficult to add physical NDs into the body unless it has a fixed lens. In the photography side, I just want a high res mode from the G9 and 14-bit RAW for photos.
It’s really unbelievable how you always amaze me, not only with the amount of valuable info you provide us with, but also with the super high quality of your videos! Great job👍. Thank you for the tenth time!
I'm told by somebody I know in the sensor industry that Sony is playing hard ball with Panasonic on PDAF sensor licensing. It's NOT that Panasonic doesn't want those sensors....it's that Sony is making it hard (i.e. too costly) to get them. When I asked him why Sony sells PDAF sensors to Olympus, Nikon and Fuji...but not Panasonic, his answer to me was that Sony and Panasonic's relationship was very "complicated". So, I'm told that Depth From Defocus is just Panasonic's desperate attempt to make lemon's into lemonade. They are backed into a corner and this is NOT their fault. Hopefully, future negotiations will lead to Panasonic finally getting PDAF sensors. But so far, Sony seems to enjoy seeing the market complain about Panasonic's AF problems. Sony seems to be in no rush to step in and save Panasonic. However, Sony does seem to be happy selling contrast only sensor licensing.
GH6 should not be smaller than APS-C or no feature will make it meaningful in this point of camera technology development. Doesn't matter if it had great AF, 6K, IBIS and dual native ISO all combined. Small sensor is too big a compromise and focal reducers have their downsides.
That won’t happen for sure, GH is their signature m43 size. That won’t change. At the end of the day, there’s a camera for everyone. M43 is not for everyone
I almost spat out the water in my mouth when he said black magic pocket 6k full frame. Now that camera I would get in a heart beat. I’m excited just thinking about it.
Thank You very much for the video. All the cameras you mentioned above are great and I hope your predictions come true. As a user of the GH5 would like to add two more features to the GH6, first is camera position tracking for the post-production stabilization, and the second is a built-in variable electronic ND filter, and I hope that this ND becomes a standard for all cameras that are video oriented since it is a great technology and I would appreciate it very much!
All sounds very sensible to me. Formfactor smaller and no internal battery would be great. Or add an external battery mount like many lights have... I wouldn't mind that. I rarely make use of an internal battery anyway. External snap-on would be interesting though.
I'm looking forward to a Blackmagic 12K -16 bit upgrade and a 'pocket' 8K using the same sensor as the 12K and re-designed body for gimble work. These will take Blackmagic to the top tier of cinema cameras very quickly!
Two days before I got my GH5s. Best Idea ever. What will come this year is too much expensive. And bigger sensors need bigger lenses... so the GH5s in addition to my GH5 and GX9 will give me everything I need. 😊
I have to disagree with you in terms if auto focus for the bmpcc6k!! We don't need autofocus because it will be rigged out, and it will affect the price!
If the ursa 12k is any indication of the way bm wants to make their cameras the new 6k will probably have the newer chip maybe an rf Mount and still s35. I have the Komodo and I have to say having that 5 inch screen is nice on the bm6k but if you can save money taking that out and adding a smaller screen with the red form factor it may work when it comes to pricing.
@@THEDPJOURNEY they don’t realize it but when you rig it out it’s extremely hard to add function to such a small camera. My camera by the time I add everything is no longer a run and gun it weighs more than a lot of regular Reds 🤣
Great video, however the only one I disagree with is a new bmpcc6k, I think the BMMCC is due for an update, and hopefully it'll be 6K or 8K in a box form factor, but of course we all have different expectations and wants, but I did enjoy your video, very well put together.
Canon still sells quite a few cine EF lenses that are quite good and quite expensive, they are protecting those lenses with limited cine camera releases, at least until they start making RF cine lenses.
1. You are the presentation god! PLEASE dont think that there are no people out there that can fully appreciate the effort and perfection you put into the visual aspects of your videos. 2. Whith the overall quality of your videos, you should already have 10x as much subs man. Crazy
Phase detection AF causes issues with the image, I noticed it on the ZV-1, and Camera Conspiracies noticed it on his A7S III. If the GH6 got phase detection AF, you'd mainly be using it with native lenses. Considering many people adapt lenses, it really isn't a huge selling point, it's nice but not essential. I'd buy the GH6 even if the AF is just like the GH5. I'm thinking Panasonic may (hopefully) announce a new lens too, perhaps an imagined 35-75mm f/1.7 to compliment the 10-25 f/1.7 (my preferred lens). By using a digital crop with 6K in post or sensor crop modes in 4K, you can easily bridge the gap from 25mm to 35mm, that's why I think the next f/1.7 zoom should be a 35-75mm. Also, I think it makes more sense for the second native ISO to be at around 3200 (it was 2500 on the GH5S), this is micro four thirds after all! I agree with you on the price tag of $3000, at least it's realistic for the hypothetical features you listed!
Not true I think. The S1H had banding issues. That happened with zero PDAF points too. And unless you're pushing 4-5 stops over/under, it's hard to see any impact. Panasonic also needs to stop making crazy priced lenses. The $1700 price tag on the 10-25 is too much. Although it is a beautiful lens. The point of m43 is to be smaller and cheaper. I would rather they reverse engineer the Sigma 18-35 and 50-100 and build a Panasonic versions with inbuilt speedboosters. Create a 12-25mm f/1.2 and 35-75mm f/1.2 lenses.
@@professionalpotato4764 That would be ideal, I had the Sigma 18-35 and 50-100, a great combo. That 50-100 was a big one. I don't think it would happen but would be a smart choice to have built in focal reducers, the hypothetical lenses you mentioned would be f/2.4 full frame equivalent depth of field, slightly more than the Sigma which is like f/2.55 on the 0.71 adapter. I'm still holding out for the tele companion to the 10-25 f/1.7, 35-75 would be fantastic.
I'd definitely buy the GH6 if it had all that you said... But I know it won't be an all in tech machine as capable as you said. I'll take 4k internal raw, 14 stops dynamic range, dual gain ISO, full VLog, and ibis. That would be enough to justify $2800 imho. But they won't make what you or I described for one reason... No mft owner would EVER buy or consider a S Series camera if they made what we want. They apparently don't even give us what we want in the S system. 🤦🏿♂️
@@THEDPJOURNEY hmmm... Let's just say if it does... I'm buying it and I'm thanking you. I'll send you a gift in the mail if the specs are as you say. Tell you what, if it has internal RAW, 14 stops dynamic range, IBIS, and dual native iso, I'll find and send you a gift. Seriously man...I will.
@@THEDPJOURNEY well if it has external Raw.... So be it. I'll figure the gift still. But damn... No braw still forces me into Mac World and Premiere/Final Cut. But I absolutely love DaVinci Resolve. Sigh
One day after you published this video, Sony has announced the A1. It seems a bit like a Canon R5 catch up to me. I'll be interested to find out what you think of it and its 50.1 MP sensor..
I CAUGHT YOU... You didn't watch my video till the end: I already mentioned that upcoming release at the end of the episode...hahaha Yeah it's like the R5 when it comes to chest beating about the 8K Video. And yeah I'm not interested in it at all as a DP. Maybe as a photographer yes.
@@THEDPJOURNEY are you sure? I heard you mention the Sony A7 IV. But my real reason for the comment is I have a Panasonic S5 but am think of upgrading my 2012 Canon 5D Mk III to the R6. The only Sony I've enjoyed using is the RX1R. and not the A7RII. I enjoy your videos. Thank you.
I hope(dream of) that Blackmagic releases a upgraded BMMCC with a (s)35(mm) sensor and a battery mount on the back. I also hope that the they come out with a "BM mount" that supports all flange distances, something like kinefinity and Z-cam are doing. And it would be awesome if the video assist monitor could control the camera.
I have been using my BMPCC 6k for over a year now. I love it. It is a fantastic camera. There are many things it lacks and things I wish were different but the negatives do not compare to how great the camera is for its price. I have been in the market for a new cinema camera for awhile and am waiting for something worth up grading from my BMPCC 6k. So far nothing. I was close to getting either the Komodo or the C70. The Komodo just does not seem that much better than my BMPCC 6k for the larger investment I would make in upgrading. The same thing with the C70. Actually, if you could combine the komodo and the C70, they would be the perfect camera. I will just wait and hope 2021 has the camera for me. Maybe it will be another BMPCC.
Hahaha... well again... those are "calculated Gut Feelings"... The S5 after all is FF not like the GH6 which is M43. In all cases, if you can wait, then for sure wait
@@THEDPJOURNEY part of that calculus was considering my existing investment in m43 glass, and not wanting to venture into expensive L glass with these AF reservations. I picked up a G9 for the interim.
Nice predictions. Maybe someday i will dip my toes into video stuff. Wanna try stills first and become pro in that someday. Always like watching cool tech videos though.
I would love to see the GH6 be a marriage between The sony a7s iii and GH5, though I hope the price is cheaper than $3000. I don't think too many would pay that much for a micro four thirds camera...
On Canon, I think you're more likely to get two cameras between the C70 and C300iii: a C90 with an RF mount; and a C200ii with an EF mount. They will be fairly similar in terms of output, but the C90 will be in the form of the C70, and the C200ii will be in the form of the C300iii. It is also likely that the C200ii will be about $1,000.00 more than the C90, and will have a viewfinder -- as standard.
not sure how i'd feel about a $3000 GH6 although I'm already heavily invested in M43 lenses. However a game changing, flawless AF system for the GH6 will definitely give everyone sitting on the fence between an S5 and a potential GH6 to go for the GH6. Awesome video as always!
hahaha... I literally had some troubles with my iMac screen. And had to replace it. I didn't really bother to fix my look honestly. Next video I'll look better ;)
Great predictions. I nearly bought the A7SIII, but I held back for the same reasons. Here's hoping that BMPCC FF sees the light of day! Oh, and epic graphics. I'd love to learn how you do them :)
