Those are day old button quail that you got from me which are about half the size or less of the standard day old coturnix quail which is the industry standard available feeder quail. That is important because the smaller size stresses the animal far less! If you have a sensitive gut or weaker animal these are about the size of fuzzy but with shape they are only as taxing on the animal as a pinky! They also seem to pass the digestive track faster as well

My tip for getting baby chondros to feed ... defrost the pinkie in the water from canned tuna ( tuna in spring water not oil ! ) and the bonus is you get to have a tuna sandwich 😁

I've always kept chickdown in the freezer, simply because I concidered it a food item. as for starting emeralds since you don't mention it here, when I couldn't get my basins started on f/t ratpups I started breeding african softfur rats because more experienced people recommended them and for whatever reason they did like those babies, but that could also be because those were f/k, however once started they took normal f/t ratpups as well.

While I am holding out for a Green Sanzinia from you to be available, I would be tempted by that jungle carpet clutch - amazing animals! Speaking of Sanzinia, do the tricks you use for the chondros and ETB work on Sanzinia as well?
@gsreptiles5606
@gsreptiles5606 Год назад
Hi Andrea! Honestly.....baby sanzinia are such large and nippy babies, they typically take live hopper mice on the first attempt! Thank you for watching!

Relating to the story from Greg Maxwell on quail down. When I kept arboreals in the 80's and 90's I was reluctant to use any quail feeders (or down) for fear of salmonella. I would sacrifice an occasional anole to rub it's innard juice on to mouse pinks to start chondro babies, but never quail...and I did the lizard blood only when necessary, keeping one anole frozen to use multiple times.

Excellent video Gary! Ever tried shed skin from a Hemidactylus frenatus? I used this trick (a piece on the head of a wet pinky mouse) with some stubborn feeders in the past and they went into feeding mode as soon as they smelled it. Perhaps this helps some of you out there in addition to Gary's great video.

PS: also keep the skin in the freezer 😁

Thanks for those tips mate 👍, one Q have your vets had any advance in a cue for 'nidovirus' in pythons, I'm do here in Aussie and our vets have nothing to cure it, it's a death sentence, I.ve recently lost 2 Green tree pythons and 4 Bredli all juvenile (2 years circa) so any input on this subject would be greatly appreciated. Cheers mate.
@gsreptiles5606
@gsreptiles5606 Год назад
Garry, I wish I could shed some light on this topic, I'm unable to. There are several folks over here in the US who have done extensive studies on Nido, and while we know far more than we did several years ago, there are still many unanswered questions. Thanks so much for watching!

Hey Gary, do you have a rough guide on how long you would wait for size / age on a chondro before you would consider it “safer” to probe them? By an experienced hand of course. Thanks for your time!

Thanks so much! Been struggling getting my 4 month old ETB to eat. Tried live and frozen mice, scented them with quail scent, but no luck. Reached out to Jason and ordered some button quail. He is super responsive and helpful. Great customer service. Took a little finagling, but she finally ate. Phew! Question: Any reason not to keep ETBs on a quail only diet?
@gsreptiles5606
@gsreptiles5606 Год назад
Hi Annarose, if you have consistent access to quail, and plan to keep your animal forever, there is no downside. I say "keep it forever" because if you go to sell it at any point, and it only eats quail, it might be difficult to find it a new home. In any event I'm so glad it helped, and thanks so much for watching!

Would you recommend feeding gtp quail I have a yearling on f/t mice but I would like to try quail for him
@gsreptiles5606
@gsreptiles5606 Год назад
Personally I would keep him on mice. The concern with quail is always getting them off of quail, and unlike lizards or fish, I don't think a varied diet plays a significant factor in a snake's overall well -being. Thanks for watching!
