There are so many different types of boots, from chukkas to Chelseas, and it can be confusing trying to figure out which ones are right for you.
Obviously, it depends on your lifestyle. The business professional is going to have slightly different requirements than the college student. But I think that there are three types of boots that pretty much any type of guy could get a lot of wear out of. If I were starting from scratch, these are the boots I would buy first (in no particular order).
Since these three boots can often be used interchangeably, I recommend varying up the colors and materials. This way, you have a variety of styles, colors and materials to choose from. What kind of boots do you like to wear? Leave a comment below!

Great video and really good advice on starting with a dress work boot. My style leans heavily toward casual Americana and a dress work boot fits most occasions. I have 3 different dress work boots (light brown, dark brown, and oxblood) and I should maybe change one of them up to a chelsea boot but like I said, I 'm super casual.

I have the Chukka in brown, Chelsea in black, Captain in natural (tan), and Wingtip in brandy. I am currently debating the Captain in midnight & brown. You can't go wrong with Thursday boots. On an unrelated note, I had the occasion to use their Happy Returns system to return a wrong-size belt. The return was handled at a local store instantly, with the funds credited back to my card. This was my first experience with this. Great and painless return system!

My boot collection so far is.... Dr Martens Oxblood 8 eye boots Made in England , Crockett and Jones rough out tan boots and Stefano Borella wing tip boots in Bordeaux and a Black pair same style. Honorable mention not really fashion but as work/all terrain hiking boot is Rocky Alphaforce 6169 even though their beat up with one sole missing lol

Just got my first two pair Saturday (black and brown) of Scout Chukka's from Thursday, super solid construction and a classy sillhouette that works great for the office. Will put them through the NYC winter to see how they stand up but I am definitely not relegating them to "beater boot" status...I'll be taking care of these babies.

Thanks Broc. I'm considering the Mahogany President boots. I've tried thursday's chelsea boots (didn't like the fit) and I have owned a pair of dark brown suede boots from ross (but found I never really wore those). I recently got a pair of Brown Diplomats for a more rugged and casual vibe and I already own a pair of black loafers (just in case I need to dress up, which is hardly ever) but I think the Mahogany President boots is a smart choice as my interview suit is navy blue and I tend to dress preppy/smart-casual. great choices and I totally agree on the styles. My colors would be oxblood for the work boots, dark brown for the chelseas and tan desert boots. For snowy/rainy areas, I would add a 4th: LL Bean duck boots for a commuter boot/casual boot. They are waterproof and bombproof, affordable, and look stylish.

I really like my Captains in brown from Thursday B.C. They felt great out of the box and have only felted better with wear. And they look great with most anything I have. I recommend them.But order them from the Thursday B.C. directly. I ordered from Amazon and got a substandard pair with marks and scratches in the leather and uneven nails in the soles. After a lengthy email exchange I understand now that Amazon will try and resell shoes sent back from other customers. When you order from Thursday they have stronger quality control over the shoes they send out and won't resell rejected shoes. The shoes I got directly from Thursday look great.

You should check out Cambrillon boots. You can design your own pair with the different types of leather you want as well as if you want them in blake or goodyear welt. Hand made in Spain is a plus also. Designed my pair the other week and waiting for them to arrive.

I have the same Captains and they are fantastic, the only issue I have is the sole, the heel construction may be solid but when the get wet the leather swells and starts to look a little grubby.

I currently own 2 pairs of Captains and a pair of Wingtip dress boot from Thursdays and I love their boots. I'm seriously contemplating getting the chukka from Thursdays, but lack of goodyear welt construction is the sticking point for me. I'm aware they use 'stitch-out construction' on their chukka boots, which I'm unfamiliar with. From your experience with the boots, how reliable is this style of construction? Thanks.

I love boots and i prefer the easiest to put on which is the chelsea boot and then the zipper boot. Those kind of boot cuts the time of putting socks and tying shoelaces and then protect my ankle from getting sunburn.

Good list, only difference for me is that I prefer moc toe over a service boot. Just not a personal fan of iron rangers, as an example, so I got the 1907. My favorite is a chelsea.

I think you could drop it down to just two styles -- dress work boot and Chelsea boot. If you want to swap out the Chelsea boot for a chukka boot or a jodhpur boot that's fine, but they're basically the same boot. If you want to swap out a work boot for a service boot that's fine too because they're both basically the same. You could also swap out the dress work boot for a dress moc toe (e.g. Alden Indy boot) as it is also basically a dress work boot. A traditional moc toe is a different category.

How did the Captain boots feel the first time you wore them? I just got mine and they I feel A bit uncomfortable. They definitely fit but they just feel weird. I've been building my shoe collection, I used to have a suede chukka but I already sold them, they were with me some years and they still looked great so I gave them for a very low price. Well, I don't buy shoes or boots made of suede, I prefer leather instead, I have four pair of boots: Black Chelsea boots, Brown Work boots, Brown Chukka dress boots, and a Tan Desert boots, I love them all, they make me look like a badass, I believe with those four styles you can rock out any time. I like that color too, but dark brown or black are also great. I've even seen more light grey Chelsea boots lately (from Common Projects, SLP, etc.), and those look pretty cool too. Probably not quite as versatile, though.

I stay as far away as I can from elaborate lacing systems as I can. If it takes more than 5 seconds to get on and off, it's not for me. I have Thursday boots' cognac chukka (scout) and brown leather chelseas (duke). Chukkas are a staple, so that's the pair I have. The rest of my other 5 boots are semi-formal to business casual chelsea boots of varying colors, and none of them has the trendy light crepe soles.

Think the boots shuld be moore formal, but color very nice. Chelsea boats agree about color. Black is nice, dark brown suede supernice but stains and lid show a lot moore I think. Chucka before desert boats. Might be a good ide to buy all of them before a expensive black oxford. In autum, winter and part of spring I use boots mostly.

Yeah man, I was wearing chukkas way before getting a pair of Chelseas. I tend to reach for the Chelseas more often recently, but that might just be because they're kind of in style. Both are great, versatile styles.

Just speaking on the boots I’ve worn enough to give an opinion on, I think Chelseas are the most comfortable to me. Redback is probably the most comfortable, but they are ugly so I only wear them in bad weather. For more sleek, I’d say the Common Projects Chelsea is also extremely comfortable, but a bit pricier. Also the Ecco vitrus ii is very comfortable and more affordable, but not as well built (not a stitched construction).

They work okay and stay dry. Traction is good in rain and actual snow, but they slip around a little in slush and ice.

+Andrew Coy those are olive chinos from Combat Gent (very old, have been altered). I've since turned them into shorts. Check Banana Republic for great fitting chinos.

If you want to avoid Made in China derivatives, you should look into Iron Rangers from Red Wing; Chukkas from Alden, and Yearling boots from R.M. Williams. They are all excellent examples of each of these categories. Not necessarily hating on Thursday, but you will get what you pay for.

+thePowerPlant I had a pair of Alden Indy 405s that were painful to wear. Could just be the wrong last for my feet. But my point is, more expensive (or made in USA) isn't necessarily better.

I disagree. Sure, it could be that your 405's were a lemon pair, but did you know that the Indy's were developed to be an orthopedic shoe? Made for people who stand on their feet for extended periods of time. That is why Harrison Ford wore than as a carpenter and eventually on the set of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, where they got their iconic name from. I have found that with many boots it takes many, many hours of break-in time due to their tank-like construction. Wolverines, Tricker's, and yes, even Aldens are made to such a high standard that they leathers thicker, the welting is tighter and the shanks are steel. All of this means a longer break-in period, but will also grant you a longer lifetime of the shoe and the better cost per year overall. As an added bonus they usually look a lot better too than companies who are copying or borrowing design elements. And I also beg to differ on the quality of Made in America. When you buy American made goods you are supporting hardworking Americans, who are striving to build something of quality. You can also call most American-made businesses and sort out any problems you might with their products. When you buy Made in China or elsewhere, 9/10 times you are supporting the continued practice of underpaying, hardworking people and supporting people who are only interested in the bottom line. // Granted, you are right, ultimately. If it is not comfortable for you as the buyer, than that is all that matters. Cheers.
